As the shops fill up with every shade of pink possible, I look back at the last couple of valentine days. The closer iv gotten to God, the worse those days have been.

I have always been Christian....on paper...but my relationships haven't been based on Godly principals. At the peak of this I would have been on my way to the airport, getting flown somewhere romantic for a valentines weekend, would have had flowers, chocolate delivered to work, and some sort of sadistic seven course meal. Lots of pinks, reds, champagne and jewellery.

And this year, when I'm at pretty much my closest to God, I will most likely be spending that evening working late and grabbing the last train home (London underground be good to me). It is a little sad but a little funny too.

Christian dating 101....they should teach that somewhere...no one tells you that good christian men aren't waiting at the door of the church to scoop you into a firemans lift.

Argghhhh!

Sadly you are right. Available godly Christian guys are thin on the ground. My first marriage ended after 23 years, and I was then a single mum for 6 years before I met my husband on a Christian internet site. He is the best.
I am sure that you are a lot younger than I was then(in my 40's) so you will have more choice than I did, so dont give up hope. You may not get flown to some exotic place or given jewellry, (not into those things myself) but a good man is worth far more than all of that put together.

Thin is an understatement. I work all the hours that God gives, so that probably doesn't help. I don't miss the things or the people who gave them, I think the difference is just amusing. I have fewer friends, I go out less.

I think of it that when Jesus wanted to speak to God, He went on by himself and left the disciples behind. So if I 'lose people' to gain God, I don't mind so much. I've read some horror stories about Internet dating. Glad it worked out for you.

Chayil, there will always be horrow stories about the internet, but I have also heard many horror stories about people who met elsewhere as well.
MY son and older daughter met their Christian spouses on line, as did 4 of my daughters close friends. I also know 3 or 4 older women who met their husband on line as well. As long as you use a reputable Christian site, use common sense, be aware of scammers and con men/women and take the usual safety precuations, then you will be OK. I recently heard that 1/5th of couples now meet on line.

For Christians, especially here in the UK where we are in a very small minority, its often the only way to meet anyone if our own church hasnt a single available guy of anywhere near our age.(as was the case with my church).  Apparently, according to a book I recently read, in the UK women in their 30's and 40's outnumber available men in the church by 3 to 1. By the age of 50 that has risen to 6 to 1. Its sad but there appear to be few Christian guys around.

When my son signed up to an internet site, he got 30 women wanting to met him within a short time. He is very good looking, and quite a catch even though I say it myself(and his lovely wife will agree), but it seems so sad. His wife was the first to contact him.

Mind you chayil there are some good lively large churches in London, with lots of young people to meet.

I love my current church. I have a 'network' of friends, friends I look forward to seeing you know? If there are single men in my church, they are at the back and do not put in an appearance till sun down. The larger churches do tend to be a bit of a distance from me.

I understand your point on the Internet...I guess I still like the idea of meeting someone...in person..without the profile, and the likes and dislikes page...

But I appreciate your advice. Thank you.

I met up with my husband only 4 days after first contact. We first had contact on the Tuesday, spoke on the phone 2 days later on the Thursday, and met in person 2 days after that on the Saturday, so it was like meeting in person anyway.
Not a good idea to spend ages on line, as when you meet it can be totally different. However in my case, I knew he was the one even before we met, and my son felt the same with his wife. One of those 'God' things. ::smile::

Yes and thats why I went proacticve.

IN the UK the percentage of believers is much lower than in the USA. When you become a Christian, the numbers of avalable men drops dramatically, as you take non believers out of the pot. The pickings are slim, but God can find that needle in a haystack, that jewel.  However we need to give him a fighting chance by making sure that we do things that mean we will have contact with other believers of our age group. If we never do those things, how will that meeting ever happn unless he walks into our church one day?

See this is the thing I politely disagree with. I don't need to give God a hand. I mean even if the man for me ( tall, dark n everything else in between) was on an expedition to the north pole, I think God would make a way when the time was right. This is another reason I struggle with le Internet ( that's French for the Internet)..God brought Ruth and Boaz together.....right?

You are using the internet now. We use the internet all the time, for many different pusposes. Dating is just one of them. Why is it ok to use it for some things and not others?

Do you not think that God is able to use different means to bring two people together? How about singles events? Or singles holidays? Are they allowed or is that too proactive? How about speed dating? Blind dates?

Personally I think that God is free to use whatever means necessary, and God saw fit to use that way for me and two of my children. We all have amazing godly spouses. I suspect that if I hadnt gone on line, I would still be alone now 8 years later. Instead I have an amazing very happy 7 year marriage.

My daughters husband is from another country in the UK, so they would never have met otherwise. My sons wife is from the opposite end of the country, so they would never have met either.

Going by what you say, we must not use any modern things because they arent in the Bible. ::shrug::

Yes, He can and does use many diffrerent means to accomplish His purposes. The internet means that he can bring people together who live a distance apart. My husband only lived 40 mins drive away, bit its highly unlikely that we would have met. I had never been to his town in my life. I think its great what He can do now through modern technology.

Christian dating 101....they should teach that somewhere...no one tells you that good christian men aren't waiting at the door of the church to scoop you into a firemans lift.

Argghhhh!

  So very True!!! ::nodding::

::applause:: Chayil, I agree with you 1000%.   ::smile::

Stucky you met your wife on the internet ::eek::

::blushing::  Oops, ya caught me.   ::smile::  What I meant was that I agree with her that God doesnt need any help.  Remember, I met my first wife before there was an internet.   ::smile::

But I also agree with you that sometimes God uses certain means, like the internet, to make His will done.

(sheesh, women  ::frustrated:: )

I agree Chosen.  My wife lived 90 minutes away and I went through her town about 5 times a month, driving right by where we have our new home.  I was a criminal investigator so I doubt if we would have ever met also.

There was a time BEFORE the internet?

Yep. It was called the 1960s.  (at least PART of the 1960s)  Back then it was known as the DARPA Network.

...and let me guess, there were dinosaurs who washed people's dishes and people had to push their cars with stone wheels with their feet through holes in the floor?

I'm one of the internet generation.  I may have been born before AOL, but I certainly grew up with internet connections.  It really seems to make a huge difference.  My parents (and even older friends) sit around and wonder about things or say that they "don't know" something; I just pull out my mobile internet connected device and google it for an answer.  We live in an amazing time where nearly anything is knowable in just a few seconds.

FC, you sweet little tadpole, I like ya dude but you sure missed a good generation.  I'm happy that you love it today with the internet, Ipads, Iphones, notebooks, tablets, etc., but, looking back, I didnt miss anything.  I see all these fat kids today that sit in front of an electronic device all day long (even in school) getting no exercise, just eating junk food, watching porn, playing games, getting involved in internet bullying, etc., etc., etc., and I thank God I'm an old dinosaur (that's a complimentary term to me, not derrogatory).

When I was growing up, without a phone, electricity, running water, air conditioning, indoor plumbing, etc. I had a ball, playing outside with other kids, walking for hours exploring my world and doing things the kids today would be shocked at.  God bless you FC, you can have all your electronic devices.   ::smile::

Yay I used to LOVE the flintstones.  ::smile::

Isn't that great that we have so much information at our fingertips? I love it. I was born in the 1950's so didn't grow up with all this, and yet we do have to understand that things have changed and will keep on changing.

God using the internet for His purposes, such as teaching, forums such as this, bringing people together, or whatever else it may be, is quite normal and good. He will use whatever means necessary to do His will.

We also have to remember that most marriages were arranged in the Jewish culture at that time, so no need to have to find a spouse. Internet dating sites are one modern way that God can match make, and He is the best match maker ever.

I met my first wife on the internet.  Not through a dating site, but through a message board similar to this one.  I've also met other women through dating sites and while none of them led to marriage, I do see how they can be a great tool for meeting people.

Apparently 1/5th of couples now meet on line. Thats an enormous number of people.

Lol.  Ya got me confused again.  My old eyes read that word as erroneous.   ::help::

You both have me very confused. On one hand, God is able to bring the person for you amongst the fazzillions of people on the internet (crooks and all) to you, to that dating website, but in the same breath you doubt that you would have met your spouse if not for the glory of the tinternet?

That's contradiction if I ever heard it. You think by going online (unless God said to you to go online) you ensured ( or made more possible) that you would meet the spouse who lived within a 2 hr drive?

If your God-given partner had lived on a farm with no aol, no sky, no Samsung/apple wars, you think God wouldn't have brought you together another way? I have no qualms with people finding their Romeos et Julie's online. I do have a problem with people thinking that we have made the process easier for God. Or that without the Internet, le google, we'd still be single, because God has got wireless.

::shrug::

That is a bit of a stretch from my post methinks. One would read that and think I suggested we abolish mobile phones. My point remains the same. We are not doing God a favour by going on the Internet. Facebook, twitter, yahoo, whatever, God doesn't need any of it. If He chooses to use that method, great, but He could just as easily have you argue over the last roast chicken at the deli counter.

The internet opens up far more possibilities for us than was previously possible. God is able to bring people together who don't live very near each other(as in the case of my son and eldest daughter and their spouses). Before the internet, its unlikely that we would have ever got to know other Christians from 100's of miles away, because there would be no reason for us to ever go there.

God is free to use whatever means he chooses to bring two people together. Whether that be on the internet, in our church, at work(if you are lucky enough to have any Christians at work),at a singles event, at speed dating, on a blind date organised by friends, at a  Christian conference, or anywhere else He chooses. Why limit Him?

For me, and for many others, He used the internet. Women at the age I was then (in my 40's) really don't meet any guys of that age in churches simply because there aren't any available. The internet enables us to contact, and get to know, that wider church family, which I see as a real blessing, especially in the UK where most churches are small.
.
All I do know is that in general those singles I know who are expecting their spouses to turn up at their front door, are still waiting, and many of those I know who have make that effort to meet other people in their same position, in whatever way that may be, have met someone. Yes we need to pray for God to direct us in whatever we do, but surely God expects a bit of effort on our part? The way I met my husband was a true miracle, so many God-incidences happened which enabled us to briefly be in the same site at the same time(we only over lapped by a few days)and other amazing things, but we  truly have a God ordained marriage. I would do it again every time. My son too tells anyone who asks that he and his wife met on line. She is a beautiful, sweet, kind and godly girl, a real treasure.

By the way nearly all the guys that I got to know on line, were genuine nice Christian guys, not weirdos at all.  In life there are some weirdos, as on the internet, and they are usually quite easy to spot. Definitely in the minority though.
