Hi All,

I was trying to connect to a photo of me on my flickr account but it just shows as a broken link (the little pic with tear in the bottom right?).  I am wondering if I can have a photo of me or do I need to find something else for an avatar?  I did do a search but haven't come up with anything.

Appreciate any help or advice:) a sister in Christ, Denise

You can have a photo of you but dont ask me how to do it. I usually ask one of my kids to do such things when they come and visit. ::eek::

I believe you have to have 50 posts before it will let you pick your own avatar. (not one of the stock ones)

Denise

Well, I know how to upload one but it is not showing up so I am doing something wrong;)  Thank you for your help though, I know now I can have a regular photo instead of a cross etc.  I still may choose another type of avatar, just exploring some possibilities;) ysic, denise

You can link to facebook pics in your profile.

In your picture albums. I'm thinking. Its a Bob type question.

Denise

Ohhhhhhh, that explains it, and I bet I missed that in the "directions"!  Thanks Dave, I have heard that on other forums so bet that is the deal, thanks again, Denise

Yep, definitely a Bob question...

Specifying an avatar by url can be tricky for the inexperienced, it's not really too bad once you understand how it works...

You must keep in mind that the image must be stored in a permanent area of the internet somewhere, where a lot of folks mess up is by specifying a url that may get "broken" later, might work temporarily, but if the image ever gets moved or deleted from its location specified by the url, you have problems...

The reason so many images you see here in various places that were posted inside messages by myself or the admin never change or get broken is that we have access to FTP upload to a special subdirectory of our system where images or anything else we like can be stored permanently without having to worry whether they will be changed... you do not have access to that directory currently.

So, all you need to do is supply a properly coded link to the location of wherever the image you want to use is located... if the link you provide does not result in displaying it properly, either there is something wrong with the link's format, or there is a problem with the format of the image itself...

At the top, choose Profile->Account Settings.

On the next page, below the banner ad is a second dropdown menu.   Choose Modify Profile->Forum Profile.

The top section of that page allows you to choose (radio buttons) between choosing from the gallery here, uploading a file, and linking to an external site.

Note that if you link to an external site, it is possible that site will block you directly linking to the photo on their server.  Many sites discourage this practice, as it uses their bandwidth for page-views that aren't even on their own site.  If it's uploaded to a site made for this purpose (e.g. Photobucket) then it should work.  I haven't much experience with Flickr, so no idea what their policies are.

There are limitations on what you can upload if you choose to upload.  The picture has to be smaller than a certain size (width x height), and less than a certain size in KB (MB?) as well.  If you upload a high-resolution 8x10 photo, the forum will balk.  I don't know off-hand what those limitations are.

excellent info Bob, I am studying code in school right now and I can't see any problem in it.  It's from flickr and the photo is there.  What about size?  Does that enter into it?  On a webpage I was working on, I had a broke link and it was because the file was not in the right folder on my hard drive.  Anyway, I am off to do some other things that need attention.

whoops, got this last post from WS and maybe too large, will try smaller.

May I ask what your major is?... glad to see you fixed the avatar issue, looks like you chose the "upload" method, cool...

Denise

I used Photobucket and that worked so must have been a flickr issue.

I started out taking classes to work in the medical administrative assistant area but have sort of migrated into more business courses.  Don't have a degree in sight just not sure.  But this term I am just doing 10 credits (3 classes), Personal Finance, Writing Web pages, and Intro to Ecommerce.  I will end up working a desk as a receptionist or possibly a little accounting etc.  I am also hoping to build a web site of my own one day.  It's like I have a lot of skills, but even at my age (60) I just don't know.  I would love to find something I love doing rather than just bring home a paycheck.

There is nothing more rewarding than being able to make decent wages doing something that you love, more power to ya sweety... sometimes it takes a while to discover what your love is, but once found grab on and enjoy the ride.

Denise

I know I've heard so many people say through the years, that they are doing what they love.  I pray about it a lot because I truly want God to direct me.  Too much of my life was self-directed and although I try not to regret my choices.  I really am learning to include God in all things of my life.  I don't know why I ever thought I would ask Him for help in some areas and the others, well, I can handle those just fine on my own,  rofl ::noworries:: NOT!!

Nice to meet you Bob;)

Yep, I too have struggled with personal "service to self" issues where all I had to do was ask God for guidance but my stubborn skeptical side made His job so much harder that my path would have been much quicker and more clearly defined if I'd "listened", some of us are destined to learn life's lessons the hard way I guess...

Denise

not unlike some of our favorites in the bible hey ::giggle::
