Speaking in Tongues and being Slain in the Spirit

I suggest checking out the thread in the theology section about tongues (my personal answer is in there). Slain in the spirit is strange--I don't know much about it.

It is merely being overcome by the power of God on you through the Holy Spirit. It also allows God to do deep ministry in that person. Its good and there is nothing to fear in it.
Please lets not start another thread on tongues, there is an ongoing one already.

"Slain in the spirit" is a bad terminology for what happens.

It is when the manifest presence of the Lord is so powerful you cannot stand up in His presence any more.

If you're going to subject yourself to that MacArthur... stuff... I suggest you also look at some of the critiques, such as the one by Craig Keener.

Several years ago there was a local pastor whose wife became slain in the spirit as she tried to enter the door of the church. She fell to the ground and convulsed (for lack of a better term) for the duration of the worship service. This happened for every time she tried to enter the church building and went on for months. Church members had to step over her to enter the building. It finally got around to the whole community and the local tv station did a spot on it. I knew a lady who went to that church at the time, and when I asked her about it, she said, "This is ridiculous and embarrassing." Of course, the community made up jokes about it. It was more of a freak show than a teaching aid.

If you're going to subject yourself to that MacArthur... stuff... I suggest you also look at some of the critiques, such as the one by Craig Keener.

MacArthur is a Dispensational Cessationist, and I cannot recommend him as someone who promotes a Christ-centered approach to the Scriptures.   Many Dispensationals claim that the gifts ceased with the Apostle Paul since the Apostle Paul was the first member of the Body of Christ and his writings completed all that was necessary for the Church to be empowered to reach the lost with the Gospel.    The Apostle Paul certainly never claimed to be able to do anything without the Holy Spirit's help.     

Craig Keener is a fine theologian.   I have books by him or those to which he contributed.   He hold to the Biblical Theology approach of Bible interpretation which is a Christ-centered approach.

This is the semi-official AoG stance on exotic manifestations such as being "slain in the Spirit."

I don't recall ever seeing that sort of thing at any of the AoG churches I've visited.  But it was common at the Full Gospel church I attended (it was technically an IAOG -- Independent Assemblies of God -- church, which is not the same as the "normal" AoG.)  There was also a lot of "laughing in the Spirit" and getting "drunk in the Spirit."  It was also common at an area (Pentecostal) Church of God, and some of the area Christian Assemblies.  I don't have a huge issue with that stuff happening occasionally, because Scripture does not rule it out; but I do have concerns when it becomes normative and sought after, since Scripture also does not provide precedent for it.  I was already concerned by my church's Positive Confession leanings, and when they started sending people to the Toronto Vineyard in hopes of bringing back even more dramatic manifestations and "anointings," I left.

My thought exactly. That wasnt the Holy Spirit, she needed deliverance. Clearly no one bothered giving it to her which was crazy.

She was probably in intercession for the entire church service
