Hello bros and sis! I'm a converted Christian. Before that, I used to be a fan of metal music such as Metallica and Megadeth. When I became a Christian, I minimized (I can't totally stop listening to them) listening to these bands. I also play guitar with my college band but I stopped pursuing to be a professional rock star.

But when I discovered Christian rock bands, I reconsidered this passion of mine.

But then again, when I saw a preaching from a Seventh Day Adventist on TV, the preacher says that there can't be a Christian rock music. "Having a Christian Rock Music is like saying there is a Christian porn." (paraphrased). I think he's got a point.

I also think that with these bands' tattoos, outfit, hair styles, and aggressiveness contradicts God's teachings.

What do you guys think?

HRoberson

I think he's an .... well, he isn't thinking straight. I wonder if he uses four-part harmony at church?

Rock music is simply a style of music. What makes it not appropriate for Christians are the words and environment associated with some of it.

Christian lyrics set to rock music is Christian music.

AVZ

Personally I do not see how metal and rock are dignifying.
In general Christians would think it is not suitable for a metal or rock band to play on their own funeral, yet they think it is suitable to honor God in church.

JohnDB

That's like saying God cannot use a donkey to speak for him.

And we know full well of the story in the Bible where that happened.

Or "if you use 4:4 time it has to be Satan's music".
Of course its ludicrous.  Fireflight has some great music and they bring THE ROCK. So do many other Christian Bands. Its all to bring honor & glory to God.

Why see them or their music as evil?

Sorry guys,

Just go to this link

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1v3jVSYl8oE

It by a Christian Metal band called "As I Lay Dying"
Suggest you go to 40:00 its a song called "Salvation"

You say "Christian lyrics set to rock music is Christian music."
Well please do me a favor and let me know if you have any clue whatsoever what these guys are "singing".

Is this really the kind of music you invite in your church?
Is this really the kind of music that will be played in heaven?

Lyrics
Have you ever thought about your soul – can it be saved? / Or perhaps you think that when you're dead you just stay in your grave / Is God just a thought within your head or is He a part of you? / Is Christ just a name that you read in a book when you were at school? / When you think about death do you lose your breath or do you keep your cool? / Would you like to see the Pope on the end of a rope – do you think he's a fool? / Well, I have seen the truth / Yes, I have seen the light and I've changed my ways / And I'll be prepared when you're lonely and scared at the end of your days / Could it be you're afraid of what your friends might say / If they knew you believe in God above / They should realize before they criticize / That God is the only way to love.

Band:....guess who?

Keny,

I think you may want to take a look at this video of Metallica:

Metalica Exposed

You may also want to see the full documentary on youtube: They Sold Their Souls for Rock and Roll.

I think you can stop listening to blasphemous rock bands if you wanted to. Do you think God is not offended by this? Think of the day your soul will appear before the Just Judge Whom you must render an account of all your our actions and judge yourself whether it is acceptable to give ear to the devil's musi

Well those lyrics are certainly Satanic.

Actually, it's probably An Ocean Between Us, and I'm not impressed.

I'm not sure what this has to do with the question.

QuoteIs this really the kind of music you invite in your church?
Depends on the church, I suppose. However, the discussion isn't whether metal is "church music," but whether it can be Christian. Music style preferences are highly subjective and "Christian" isn't defined by "church music."

QuoteIs this really the kind of music that will be played in heaven?
If there is music in Heaven, do you suppose it will be limited to lyres and trumpets playing something by Handel?

Another one.

Group: For Today
Song: Crown of Thorns

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9msBh8ozOEY
These lyrics are also certainly Satanic:
"Crown Of Thorns"

We crown Him with a crown of thorns [x2]
This is the end of our life that's been burdened for all that comes (for all that comes)
The suffering manifest glory has come with the fullness of God
King of Kings
Beaten and broken down why would he live like a servant
King of Kings
They said there's no way down
Why should he die like a slave
The throne will be above, the meek will inherit the earth
The less will be first to inherit the earth
I know down is the way up so master show me how to serve
The less will be first to inherit the earth
The less will be first to inherit the earth
It should have been me
With the nails through my hands and feet
Facing the wrath of God
It should have been me
Left to pay for my sin forsaken
But in the blood I stand
It should have been me
Born to die
Before the fire of God's holy wrath on his shoulders
Born to die
I watched Him pour out his life as he wakes up for us
Man actually carried His cross on his back
Beaten and bloody and I saw myself there too
Cause I've been broken by a world that hates me
But I'm not alone anymore (alone no more)
No one can take His life; He laid it down for me
That twisted wreath of thorns, yeah He took that crown for me
Then after three days pound up for ground for me
He overcame it all
Now I live to serve Him
With stripes on his back
Betrayed by the ones he loves so perfectly
We spit in his face and we crowned Him
We crown Him with a crown of thorns [x4]

MeMyself

That musical genre is not my preference, but I am uncomfortable calling a Christian Band whose lyrics are about the Lord, but its melody and beat may be ugly to my ears not Christian.

We spend so much time finding fault with our brothers and sisters in Christ over what makes us personally uncomfortable...

I am sure, though I can't imagine being, there are some who are deeply moved, edified and encouraged by this type of music, and God glorified.
I have heard some really really bad singers sing the most treasured of hymns, just butchered and mangled them, but God was still glorified, because its the heart He sees.

I saw once a video of  a preacher from the 1940s saying the exact same thing about big band jazz music. I grew up with "rock is of the devil."  CCM pioneer Larry Norman penned these words:

I want the People to know That He saved my soul,
But I still like to listen to the radio,
They say Rock 'n Roll is wrong ,
They'll give me one more chance.
I feel so good I want to get up & dance.
I know what's right, I know what's wrong, I don't confuse it.
All I'm really trying to say Is,
Why should the devil have all the good music?
I've been filled, I feel okay,
Jesus is the rock and He rolled my blues away.

While I am sure there are some charletons out there; there are good honest Christians making metal music.

I don't know if they are still around but I used to listen to Barren Cross and Bloodgood.  (80s hair metal)

Have you ever actually heard the kind of music that is in heaven?
I have on a few occasions.

Metal can fit right in there. So can Bach.

I think you may want to take a look at this video of Metallica:

Of course bands like the rolling stones and metallica are demonic.  We have understood that for decades.

Wagner and Mussorgsky were satanists.  Should no one listen to classical music because of that?

Ah, you've been there.
Well, can't argue with the expert.

No I have never been there physically. But my ears have been opened on a few occasions (first was when I was about 5 or 6 years old) to hear it.

That's exactly what I thought of when I saw this.  I love that song.  To those of you who say that Rock Music can't possibly glorify God take a look at the video and tell me how it isn't glorifying to God.  They talk about Jesus a lot in it especially at the end where they talk about his resurrection.

I first listened to Rock with bands like : Petra, 2nd Chapter of Acts, and Ressurection.

Sandi Patty Concerts were $.50 at that time. She charged more later.

I certainly believe you can have Christian music, rock and metal not excluded. I have found people at their most emotional passionate when playing/listening to music as if it were a voice fot he soul. I see no reason why it should not be used in prayer and worship when we *should* be at our most passionate. When it comes to heavy metal, I have a very skewed view of it. My atheist son listens to a lot of unsavory with such bands as "Deathstars" and the aptly named "Cradle of Filth".  However, my children who are both into these genres of music have alerted me to Christian themed songs in this genre too such as "Carpenter" by "Nightwish" or "Stick Stickly" by "Attack Attack".

What do you guys think?

Ever hear of a guy by the name of W.C. Handy? He is now known as the "father of the blues". His father was a pastor who called musical instruments the "tools of the devil". Some things never change, I guess.

Listen to what you want to hear, play what you want to play. The Spirit will guide you, and you may find your tastes changing. Don't be surprised if someone drafts you into the music ministry.
