Hi there.

Please read the following, and lets discuss it. These bits are taken from a book available from Amazon. I think the book shows that works of the Spirit are part of salvation, in that it shows that Christ died not only to pay for our sins but also to enable us to bear the fruit of the Spirit unto God.
And please do look up the references.
Note that Eph 3:7-8 seems to confirm that grace is indeed the gift.

For by grace [the Spirit of graciousness (divine nature) dwelling in your heart, condemning your unrighteousness to your flesh, and working to do righteousness] are you saved through faith [in Christ]; and that not of yourselves: it [the Spirit of graciousness] is the gift of God: Not of works [pertaining to the flesh], lest any man [flesh] should boast. For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works [pertaining to God's Spirit of grace], which God has before ordained that we should walk in. Eph 2:8-10; 3:7-8; 4:7; Rom 5:15; Philip 2:13; Rom 9-14; Heb 10:29.

There is therefore now no condemnation to them that are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit [of grace]. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus i.e. the command to love one another, in accordance with the Spirit of grace, makes us free from the law of sin and death [the Mosaic Law, which convicts of sin and thus condemns to spiritual death]. Rom 8:1-2; Gal 5:18; Jn 8:31-32.

Christ came to fulfil the Mosaic Law, in that He came to make it possible for the righteousness of it i.e. love, to be fulfilled in people. By condemning unrighteousness [sin] in the human body [the flesh] by the presence of God's Spirit of grace [divine nature] dwelling within His likeness of sinful flesh at His death and during His resurrected life, Christ has made it possible for other human bodies to be made genuinely gracious at heart by the presence of God's Spirit of grace [divine nature] dwelling within them condemning their unrighteousness to their flesh, their old life, and working to do righteousness in their new spiritual life. Thus by implanting God's Spirit of graciousness [divine nature] within people, Christ enables them to mortify the deeds of their old life, the deeds of the flesh, and to produce the deeds of their new life, the fruit of God's Spirit i.e. love. Rom 8:3-5 & 9-11; Gal 5:14-24; 2 Pet 1:4.

What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as [i]pertaining to the flesh[/i], has found? For if Abraham were justified by works [pertaining to the flesh], he has thereof to glory i.e. glory by works pertaining to the flesh; but not before God [his glory would be before other people, other flesh]. For what says the scripture? Abraham believed God [and thus lived in accordance with his faith in God's word apart from the Mosaic Law], and it was counted to him for righteousness, compliance with God's will. Rom 4:1-3.

Now to him that does works [pertaining to the flesh] the reward is not reckoned of grace [calculated according to how gracious he has been], but of debt [calculated according to how well he has kept the Mosaic Law (Gal 5:1-3)]. But to him that does not do works [pertaining to the flesh], but believes on Him that justifies the ungodly [by the free gift of His Spirit of grace dwelling in their heart]; his faith is counted for righteousness, compliance with God's will. Rom 4:4-5; 5:15.

What does it profit, my brethren, though a man say he has faith, and has not works [pertaining to the Spirit of grace]? Can faith save him? If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, and one of you say to them, Depart in peace, be warmed and filled; and yet you do not give them those things which are needful to the body [clothes and food]; what does it profit? Even so faith, if it has not works [pertaining to the Spirit of graciousness], is dead, being alone.
