Recovering An Identity

I enjoyed this article.  In talking about identity, Dr. Shelley mentions the importance of the community of the church in reinforcing our identity for each of us as individuals.  It reminded me of a discussion between two people in a movie I recently saw.  The question was asked, Why do people get married, anyway?  With all the problems, high rate of divorce, etc., why DO people take the risk of getting married?  The answer given was something I had not considered before.  She answered that we get married so that we have someone to be a witness to our life.  When you marry, you are promising to care about every little thing that goes on in your partner's life, and to notice them.  As I thought about this, I thought how true this is.  And not only true for marriage, but should be true for those of us in community in the church.  Part of our responsibility to each other is to be witnesses to each others' lives, to care about and notice the little things that happen to each other, thereby validating each life as important.  Sometimes we forget this.

What movie?
There is an older lady I know that doesn't have much family and she lives alone.  Whenever I see her or talk to her she is so happy just to have someone to talk to.  She almost doesn't get a breath of air in.  She's such a sweet lady and is ninty years old, and in great health.  I like when other people will let her talk with them as well, because she seems to really need her church family.  Like the rest of us.
