Mandrakes #1736

    Quote:
    Hebrew: dudaim; i.e., "love-plants"

occurs only in Gen. 30:14-16 and Song of Songs 7:13

Many interpretations have been given of this word dudaim. It has been rendered "violets," "Lilies," "jasmines," "truffles or mushrooms," "flowers," the "citron," etc. The weight of authority is in favor of its being regarded as the Mandragora officinalis of botanists, "a near relative of the night-shades, the 'apple of Sodom' and the potato plant." It possesses stimulating and narcotic properties (Gen. 30:14-16). The fruit of this plant resembles the potato-apple in size, and is of a pale orange color. It has been called the "love-apple." The Arabs call it "Satan's apple." It still grows near Jerusalem, and in other parts of Palestine.

as aphrodisiac
Any of various forms of stimulation thought to arouse sexual excitement.

They may be psychophysiological (arousing the senses of sight, touch, smell, or hearing) or internal (e.g., foods, alcoholic drinks, drugs, love potions, medicinal preparations). Most foods traditionally believed to be aphrodisiacs have no chemical components that would have such an effect. In some cases, their reputation may be based on a supposed resemblance to genitalia (e.g., ginseng root, rhinoceros horn). Drugs such as alcohol or marijuana may lead to sexual excitation by lessening the user's inhibitions. Few medical studies have been conducted; the only substances medically recognized as aphrodisiacs are extremelyhazardous to the health.

Reuben; the 1st Born and 1st born son of Leah
Gen.29:31
And when the LORD saw that Leah was hated,
he opened her womb: but Rachel was barren.
32 And Leah conceived, and bare a son,
and she called his name Reuben:

Gen.30:14
And Reuben went in the days of wheat harvest,
and found mandrakes in the field,
and brought them unto his mother Leah.
Then Rachel said to Leah,

Give me, I pray thee, of thy son's mandrakes.

15 And she (Leah) said unto her,
Is it a small matter that thou hast taken my husband ?
???
and wouldest thou take away my son's mandrakes also ?

A Deal / an agreement is offered
And Rachel said,
Therefore he shall lie with thee to night for thy son's mandrakes.

Deal Accepted
16 And Jacob came out of the field in the evening,
and Leah went out to meet him, and said,
Thou must come in unto me;
for surely I have hired thee with my son's mandrakes.
And he lay with her that night.

A fermenated drink {wine} made from it was used in witch craft

who found them, = Reuben
where he found them = In the Field at the time of the Wheat Harvest
who he gave them too = Leah
who wanted them, = Rachel
why she wanted them  ???
1) mandrake, love-apple
1a) as exciting sexual desire, and favouring procreation

and what she was willing to give to get them, = ???

I think it becomes apparent, coming from a society of Paganistic Religions
Superstition, Old Wives Tales, Cunningly Devised Fables
Rachel == but Rachel was barren.
felt these Mandrakes would aid in conception and she too would
bring forth children, grow the Family

Confiding then in the power of Christianity to resist the infection of evil, and to transmute the very instruments and appendages of demon worship to an evangelical use, and feeling also that these usages had originally come from primitive revelations and from the instinct of nature, though they had been corrupted; and that they must invent what they needed, if they did not use what they found; and that they were moreover possessed of the very archetypes, of which paganism attempted the shadows; the rulers of the Church from early times were prepared, should the occasion arise, to adopt, to imitate, or sanction the existing rites and customs of the populace, as well as the philosophy of the educated class."(Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine, John Henry Newman, a cardinal by Pope Leo III in 1879, 1878, p351-353)

The use of temples, and these dedicated to particular saints, and ornamented on occasions with branches of trees; incense, lamps, and candles; votive offerings on recovery from illness; holy water; asylums; holy days and seasons, use of calendars, processions, blessings on the fields, sacerdotal vestments, the tonsure, the ring in marriage, turning to the East, images at a later date, perhaps the ecclesiastical chant, and the Kyrie Eleison, are all of pagan origin, and sanctified by their adoption into the Church." John says;

Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen,
and is become the habitation of devils,

In so far as the Romans had a religion of their own, it was not based on any central belief,
but on a mixture of fragmented rituals, taboos, superstitions, and traditions
which they collected over the years from a number of sources.[/quote]

the use of Mind altering Mandrakes,
profane and old wives' tales,

What the use of  pharmakeia { far-mak-i-ah} and other drugs do to the Physcial
the use of (Mandrakes), sorceries; profane and old wives' tales,
does to the mind

I  are we really so ignorant of the origins of the RCC that we honestly do not know that the majority of these practices
these Mandrakes
(and sadly those practices have bled over into christianity as a whole)
are deeply rooted in the hodge podge of paganism that was religion in early Rome?

so what are some of these Mandrakes Rome brought into the church
???
some of these
"rites and customs of the populace, as well as the philosophy of the educated class"

Things which appeal to the Flesh and the Carnal Minded
