How much does it cost to keep this forum running?

Alan

I have no idea myself, not sure if you'll get a definitive answer.

Hosting costs depend on how much bandwidth is required.    Text does not eat up that much bandwidth but when we post images that's when the usage jumps up.

I would not expect that the board owner would provide this exact information because it is not the business of the general membership.

Images are hosted elsewhere, preferably at image hosting sites although many here hotlink their images, either way we only provide the path to where the image is hosted, when that host goes down so do the images on the forum.

BTW, hotlinking isn't disallowed in the forum rules at this site, even if it's frowned upon at other sites and/or against their rules. It's basically stealing bandwidth.

I know.   I once posted a link to a well-known Christian music artist at a forum like this, and while I thought I was helping to promote his music, he sent a visible nasty gram in response to remind me that his bandwidth was being stolen.   I know that hosting has lots of options these days and my knowledge of this is probably pretty dated.   I was an admin (not the owner) for a web site probably ten years ago by now and I think the hosting site handled everything.

Some of them do, in fact I believe it's an option in SMF. A car forum I belong to has strict rules against hotlinking but that's understandable since the forum consists of conversations based around images.
