Or  better yet, a Christian/real Man.  Thoughts?

Leadership.

And by that I mean, being able to lead off the beaten path, in some form or another. Whether other people follow him or not, a real man can make solutions to problems against convention or popularity. He'll do what's right despite the flow of the crowd.

johndoo

A recent secular survey associated masculinity with respect and honor.

Dr. Robert Lewis says that real men
Reject passivity
Accept responsibility
Lead courageously
Expect God's greater good.

I see how all of these can be part of it.

I've been listening to a Christian rap artist by the name of Tedashii for about half a year now.  One of his albums, "Man Up" gives me the goose bumps every time I listen to a song from it.  One key point they talk about in the making of a Man is following God and submitting your problems to Him.  I really like that concept, because we are all children in God's eyes, therefore we NEED Him to show us how to be Men.

Sounds silly, but I've been contemplating whether I should write a book about the attributes of a Real, Christian Man.  What can I say?  I've got big dreams and a huge imagination  ::smile::

sesantek

His connection with Christ. He can't be the real man except he learns from the Spirit of God.

As long as you have a weiner you should be good, broseph.

Well that is a bit vulgar, no worries though, I have no problem dropping down to that level. ::noworries:: rofl

I would suggest that what is more important is what hangs below.  ::pondering::

Being a man is not so much about leadership as it is being true to one's convictions, however one often follows the other.

Too often men take on leadership out of pride, it is far more manly to forget one's pride and be a good follower.  It is from here many a true leader emerges.

Cheers,
Carey.

HonestHistorian

Carey is right. To be a man requires courage of convictions, and let me add the ability to understand when they've been wrong and make amends.

FaithPlusOne is wrong. Many females have taken on male roles and humbled the greatest of men. Joan of Arc is one such case.

WILDJC

As Jerry Seinfeld would say, "The jacket and ties in my closet".

I heard someone say, "man up = slave up". Honestly, I didn't make that up myself, though I agree with the person that said it . . . basically there's lots of shaming language in the church these days to get RESULTS out of men while paying no mind to meeting their needs (that is, at the level of human beings).

At any rate, to "man up" can't be done without finding the love of God. God makes us strong and then bold to do great things once we accept His free love and healing.

I think there's great need these days to allow men permission to like themselves for who they are (personally, I do it without others' permission anyway). I think a lot of this "man up" stuff is trying to lock away that permission and call it a prize for fulfilling everyone else's expectations for how to be a man . . . so they can get what they want from you.

In conclusion, I'm preaching the gospel message: accept the free love from God, quit acting like you have to earn permission to like yourself as a man. That's my take.

Logic.  Visual Orientation.  Risk-taking.  Innovation.  The desire to change the world to fit you, rather than fitting yourself to the world.

I guess you're really asking asking what makes a man admirable, though.

+1. I cannot stand the term "man-up".

If somebody ever said "man-up" to me, I can guarantee that I would comply but almost certainly not in terms of the selfish desires (or again, at least "let us hear nothing of any of your needs as a human being") of the person who said it.

The same thought I have anytime someone asks this or a similar question.
Acts 13:22
After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him: 'I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.

Everyone, every man has a god, ; real men put God first.  In this world this is not easy.  Real men love Jesus.

hammer123

He'd rather take a punch to the face and not respond by hitting back, if he believes not defending himself will save the other person from hell.

He'd step in front of a bullet to save another.

When someone insults him, he blesses that person.

Actually, music does not define a Christian man.

Men listen to other types of music and yet have darkened hearts.

Curious, what music genre is acceptable for a man to listen to?

Are you familiar with this artist, or the many other rappers who praise God.

I made a point of listening to this Tedashii, and although I don't particularly enjoy rap, Tedashii is using a medium that reaches out to a demographic that needs to be addressed.

Carey.

When you become wise you will no longer listen to rap music.  It signifies the ignorance of a generation and is ungodly.  It is music that generates self-pride instead of GOD-pride.

Sure, you can change the lyrics, but it still represents garbage.

Does this only pertain to rap then, is there an acceptable music style for man to listen to?

NowFound

I think we do have to be cautious of what we watch, listen, and participate in - but I don't think any music type is inherently unholy.  Rap, rock, pop, country, elevator music, you could go on and on...it's the purpose and content that define it as worthy or not, right?

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.  1 Corinthians 10:31

I'm told that only Acapella hymns are authorized, and only if they are actually Psalms that appear in the Bible.  I'm also told that only the King James Bible is acceptable.  Also that chocolate is good for me, that I should listen to everything the woman says because they're more evolved than us poor cavemen, and that if I make that face, it might stick.

I'm told lots of things.

I usually use common sense instead, though.  I suggest you do the same.

A real man does not concern himself with various 50 word essays on what "makes a real man."

I think this post is a TAD paradoxical.

But in general, yes, I believe a real man does not go around asking permission and approval from others about the quality of his manhood.

I tend to agree, but I don't see that as the intent of this thread?  I rather saw it as a request for information, example, and perhaps advice.

It takes the same thing to make a male a man, as it does to make a female a woman...it takes Jesus Christ. Christ in the person is what makes them what God created them to be, and that goes as much for women as it does for men.
