Hello, I've read your articles I have to say I highly disagree with your thoughts on divorce and remarriage. I've been married 5 times, the first time at 18 years old when I was far too young and the most recent marriage at __, seven years ago. It took me a while to find the right man who brought me happiness but I finally did. I still have a close relationship with God and Jesus and feel blessed to have found this man. So what exactly is wrong with me being happy with this man?

[Bible Answer] Greetings in Jesus' name. Please give your Scriptural reasons why you reject our page on divorce and remarriage. It is based solely on Scripture. What do you base your rejection upon? To be valid it must be Scriptural (2 Tim. 3:16,17).

While it may be that you are happy with number 5, how does God view you and him? That is the issue, not your own happiness. Heart purity is the vital and deciding factor which will divide those who enter God's holy presence after death and those who don't (Mt. 5:8) andthat can change after getting saved. For you to place that anywhere less than number one in importance reveals the dangerous spiritual deception you are in. There can be no controversy about the glaring message of Scripture that divorce and remarriage in at least the vast majority of cases in our present day, and maybe even all of them, result in adultery. That sin is great enough to cause a person previously saved and a possessor of eternal life to no longer have a relationship with God. Please ponder carefully 1 Cor. 6:9,10; Eph. 5:5-7 and Rev. 21:8.

You say of yourself, I still have a close relationship with God and Jesus, but that doesn't mean it really exists! What is your Biblical evidence proving such a relationship in your situation? There is NO once saved always saved. A real Christian can die spirituallythrough adultery, with just one act, as King David did. It doesn't take a practice of adulteryto make one a Bible-defined adulterer. Again, a single act of adultery does that (Lev. 20:10). Remember Gal. 6:8,9; Mark 9:43-48 and Heb. 3:14. A Christian can lose his relationship with God through sin.

A Christian doesn't lose his salvation in the committing of a sin, but he does suffer the loss of fellowship with God, until he repents.

No one can earn salvation by works, nor do they maintain it by good works, nor can they lose it by failing God in some way. God is all about grace, and when it is applied, it is a strong testament to the kind of love God has for us and it reveals to the world the sure hope we have in Christ.

2 Corinthians 3:7-9
The old way, with laws etched in stone, led to death, though it began with such glory that the people of Israel could not bear to look at Moses' face. For his face shone with the glory of God, even though the brightness was already fading away. 8 Shouldn't we expect far greater glory under the new way, now that the Holy Spirit is giving life? 9 If the old way, which brings condemnation, was glorious, how much more glorious is the new way, which makes us right with God!

We no longer live by the law, which was the ministration of death and causes one to operate with a sin conscience. We live by grace, which is the ministration of life, and so we operate with a God/grace conscience.

John the Baptist lost his head for telling Herod who was married, that should leave that marriage because he was living in sin.

Correct. Jesus is our salvation. Are you in agreement or disagreement with what I said?

What does that have to do with this topic?

Right living is our salvation. Romans 13:11

Luke 16:18

Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries one who is divorced from a husband commits adultery... and is living in adultery as long as they stay remarried.

Sorry, but that is a lie you believe. No one can gain salvation by performance. You are adhering to the gospel of works, which is a lie of Satan.

2 Timothy 3:15
You have been taught the holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus.

So why does the last verse in the chapter end with this?

2 Timothy 3:17 so that the servant of God[a] may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

When we trust in something, we don't just think about it, we go with it. There is always something moving with trust and when we trust in Jesus, he is moving through us and we actually do stuff.

"The soul that sinneth, it shall die,"
"But if the wicked turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all My statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die. None of his transgressions that he hath committed shall be remembered against him; for his righteousness that he hath done he shall live. Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith YHWH CREATOR; and not rather that he should return from his ways, and live?" "Cast away from you all your transgressions, wherein ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit; for why will ye die, O house of Israel? For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith YHWH CREATOR; wherefore turn yourselves, and live." Ezekiel 18:21-32

You are the one who has to answer to God (Rom. 3:19). You are the one who needs to study to show yourself approved (2 Tim. 2:15).
There are verses that seem to suggest that it is possible to lose your salvation: 2 Pet. 2:1; Gal. 5:4; Heb. 10:26; 6:4-6; Ps. 69:28

Equipping of the saints is the job of Holy Spirit. It is our job to walk in obedience---not for salvation, but because we are already saved, and in fellowship and partnership with God.

Right living is the byproduct of salvation!

Yes, you do need to get into the word to know God...DAILY. A true believer cannot lose his salvation except to fully, and willfully renounce one's faith, and even then I believe God is faithful, according to His word.

Get into the New Covenant scriptures and note the difference between the House of Israel before the Saviour and since. Once we have received Jesus, we are fully justified and made righteous in the sight of God. We move away from the law, which causes men to be sin-conscious, and eventually to dis-ease, to disease, and then death. Alternatively, a life saved by grace leads to a life lived in faith, causing us to become God/grace-conscious, and produces life and the blessings of God on us.

Sin-conscious lives bring on condemnation, whereas grace-consciousness produces willing subjects of the Kingdom of God.

God equips us to do what HE calls us to, AFTER we are saved, but that isnt what saves us of course. Only the sacrifice of Jesus is what saves us. ::smile::

My sistas and brothas, Be honest.  When is the last time you actually witnessed any of these things happening in YOUR presence? Have YOU led a driving out demons service?  Have YOU ever picked up a snake with YOUR hands, simply because you believed in the power of God to keep you?  When is the last time YOU poured a glass of bleach on the rocks or made a smoothie of dishwashing detergent?  Have YOU ever laid hands on anyone and they immediately got up and walked out of the nursing home or hospital?  Well, neither have I! BUT Jesus seems to think that these are the kinds of things that we should be doing as SIGNS of our belief.  And right now, at first glance, ALL I can say is Lord, HELP THOU MY UNBELIEF!!!

Real Christians who are Spirit-filled don't have services to cast out demons. They do it in the normal course of living, rubbing shoulders with people in the world.

You examples do not correlate to scripture, for the Lord is telling us that should we INADVERTENTLY ingest something poisonous or BY HAPPENSTANCE be attacked by a deadly animal, we can count on God to keep us from harm.

This topic always worries me sometimes, as I am divorced. I was married to a man for eight years who was controlling and abusive because he refuses to seek help for his mental illness. I stayed on because I didn't believe in Divorce, I vowed for better or for worse, until he tried to suffocate me and I knew this was toxic for my daughters and I. I also learned he was repeatedly unfaithful to me.

Matthew 19:9 says "Jesus said, "And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery." So, I sometimes think that perhaps if I chose to remarry, it wouldn't be considered adultery, as my first marriage ended as a result of abuse and adultery.

Does that make sense?

JohnDB

When a marriage is over its over.

No, its not a sin to get married again unless it is to your ex-husband. That would be a declared sin according to the Old Teastament.

John is right. You had every reason to end that marriage for adultery and serious abuse. There is nothing to stop you from remarrying if God brings the right man along.

Yes I think I know that Dave, but wasnt the fact that they were forbidden to get back together because one had been sexually intimate with another at that time?  Otherwise they could live with someone for 10 years and then get back together, but couldnt get back together after a brief marriage? Does the 'defiling' come because of having sex with another person, or because they have a marriage certificate?

DaveW

You have to look at it in terms of covenant.

Marriage is a covenant and divorcing is the dissolution of that covenant.  To be then covenantally bound to someone else is what defiles that person to the former spouse.

That is also how I see the text of Hebrews 6 where it says that if someone has been in covenant with the Lord and falls away, (which I take as attaching themselves to some other religion) they cannot come back to the Lord.   We have seen plenty of cases where someone backslides and then comes back to the Lord full steam. So just backsliding does not seem to be what Heb 6 is talking about.

And remember according to Paul the marriage is a picture of our relationship (both corporately and individually) with the Lord.

When you divorce the person you were married to, unless the reason for the divorce was the other person's unfaithfulness (they cheated on you), you committ adultery by marrying again and the person who gets married to you also committs adultery.

Thats one of many opinions based upon the whole of Gods word, remembering that the word Jesus gives isnt the word for adultery, but the word 'pornea' which means sexual immorality. This can of couse include adultery, but can also mean many different types of sexual sin.
