Jets!

I live in Michigan !

And I have notice in the last few years since we moved a few miles from S.A.F.B.

They are  in the sky , I feel  24 hours a day!

The point is you can see the stuff coming out of the plane  / plain [ "I am poor at spelling Sorry!]

We do not see to many sunny day's any more  I believe because of this !
I would imagine that other States are doing the same ?

And wonder what about the pollution from this ?

Any one  have a idea on this ?

This year it just seem to have gotten worse then it has ever been !

As I am writing this, I can hear them going or coming from the base, why I know this is because when they are writing ? / [letting out the white stuff] or what ever you could call that?  They are up to high to hear them.
But when they go to refuel  , that you can hear !

What do you think  ?  Or what do you know about this ?

Quote[letting out the white stuff] or what ever you could call that?

That would be water vapor (which condenses out as fog) and carbon dioxide.  Jet fuel is hydrocarbon based.

Had to look up where Sawyer AFB was located. You are a YOUPER!

I thought the base was abandoned a decade ago ???

I thought it was Agent Orange.   ::doh::

Jet engines work by taking in air, heating it by burning fuel, and compressing it once again out the back end.

Once that air is released again it will form water vapor trails known as contrails.

It will only happen at particular altitudes and in the right atmospheric conditions. Since airplanes and jets do their flying at different altitudes...they actually prefer the layers of atmosphere where this sort of thing does happen. It makes for easier visibility in crowded skies above cities and airports. It doesn't actually pollute the air more when they are visible than when flying at any other altitude.  The wind and air currents usually will blow them back into invisibility soon...like an hour or so.

sometimes the "fog" will actually come off the wings as the moisture will condense and coalesce on the wake of the wings and not in the wake of the engine itself...

All depends upon atmospheric conditions; moisture content of the air and barometric pressure and particulate concentrations.

Well, now I can really ask the question that I believe ......

All that time they are up there , it cost !!!!!   fuel !!!!

And what is that doing to our air ?   ::frown::

JohnDB

Jets burn a fuel akin to Kerosine. It can burn clean.
