Hello brothers,

I'm a 45-year-old teacher who is still (always) growing in his faith. I'm grateful to have found this forum in a hopes that it will help me. :) I'm thankful for all of you.

I have a question and hope that it comes out as clearly as it's meant to! LOL

I did a search on "blasphemy" and you can imagine a multitude of posts came up... so it was a bit overwhelming and I apologize if this has been discussed ad nauseum.

A couple of weeks ago I was in a very dark part of my life...dealing with issues that made me pretty much a whiny baby. While on the phone with my mom (to whom I'm very close and thankfully, she has a strong faith in our LORD), I was ranting and raving and questioning God's existence... so upset with Him for why He was choosing to allow these things to happen to me. How could a loving God allow this? Why would He allow Satan to mistreat Job the way that He did? It was an ugly conversation to say the least.

I guess my fear and concern is that that was a form of blasphemy and since the Bible says that is the one unforgivable sin, I'm pretty much doomed. Since then I have repeatedly asked God for His forgiveness through the blood of His Son, Jesus Christ...

I just would like to know that I'm still forgiven and that I still have His promise of eternal life. I live with an intense fear of dying only to be tossed into the lake of fire along with the non-believers.

I'm hoping that you kind gentlemen would be considerate enough to share your thoughts and/or links to resources (or forum threads) that could shed some light. Biblical Scripture would be GREATLY appreciated! :)

Thank you so very much for your consideration and helpfulness.

Warmly,
Ted

You ask a good question.  And welcome to the forums by the way!

It is not blasphemy in general that is unforgivable but specifically blaspheming the Holy Spirit. (the text says all blasphemies against the Son and the Father can be forgiven)

From the context, I see this sin as very narrowly defined as knowingly claiming the miraculous works of God (done via the Holy Spirit) are actually works of the devil.

The fact that you are even concerned about it is indicative you have NOT done that.

Catholica

What blaspheming the holy spirit actually means has been a mystery throughout Christianity, but it has been commonly traditionally understood as refusing to repent of your sins.  I think it is clear that you wish to repent of any sins you have committed.  So you have not blasphemed the holy spirit.

Being upset with God, questioning God's motives and such I don't believe to be sins at all.  It IS hard for the human person to understand why God allows suffering and tragedy to happen, and God knows this.  You sound like you are more wrestling with God than anything, and that is a very good thing that everyone should do.  Just keep it in the back of your mind that God is good, and that what man considers not good in the short term can in fact turn out to be very good in the long term, which God sees.  Persevere and trust in the goodness of God.
