What is the true gospel, and what is another gospel?

The strongest rebuke by Paul is recorded for us in Galatians 1:6-9~"I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:  Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.  But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that we we have preached unto you let him be accursed.  As we said before, so say I again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed."

If the greatest of the apostles could say that he marveled that the Galatia's churches had so soon been bewitched by false brethren, who hindered them from understanding and receiving the gospel of pure grace through the righteousness of Jesus Christ, then we should not marvel when we see men who are so ignorant of the same gospel that Paul preached and which he so earnestly defended.

One is removed from the truth of the gospel, when he begins to inject works with grace in our legal justification before God.  The act of God giving us the gift of righteousness is by one person, Jesus Christ, God's holy Son, and him alone.  God does not take lightly those who pervert the gospel of the grace of Christ, which is seem by Paul's curse upon such people.  Those who pervert the gospel, are no friends of Jesus Christ, and are enemies to him.  Better me to say this, than God at that day~Matthew 7:23.

I affirm base upon the word of God, that salvation from sin and condemnation is totally a gift by God's grace through Jesus Christ. There are no works involved whatsoever on our part. The gospel is good news~to those who have been quicken to spiritual life by the living God. It is a message of grace to them who know themselves to be wicked sinners before the God of heaven.  Regeneration is not by the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God, through the righteousness of God's holy Son. Our works of righteousness has not one thing to do with this great salvation.  It is a Salvation promised by the oath of Him who can not lie.  The gospel of God reveals that we have been forgiven on the behalf of what Jesus did for his people, not what they can do for themselves.   That would not be good news!  The true gospel has Christ as the main focus, not man.  The true gospel is still rejected and despised as much as ever, if not more so.  Just wait and see.

A false gospel says that our salvation is in anyway about what WE must do. Its a gospel of works, and that is preached to some extent in many places.

Yes, we must reject any notion that human works save us.  It is only the sacrifice of Jesus and the grace of God that save us.  But we also must not be confused between a salvation of works and the Gospel of love.  While Paul's letter to the Galatians is very insistent on following the true gospel, Paul has this to say also:

Galatians 5
1 For freedom Christ set us free; so stand firm and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery.
2 It is I, Paul, who am telling you that if you have yourselves circumcised, Christ will be of no benefit to you.
3 Once again I declare to every man who has himself circumcised that he is bound to observe the entire law.
4 You are separated from Christ, you who are trying to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace.
5 For through the Spirit, by faith, we await the hope of righteousness.
6 For in Christ Jesus, neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love.

The works of the Old Law no longer save, that is, the law that the Jews were bound to through the Old Covenant made in the blood of circumcision.  And no works that we do save us when they are apart from the will of God, apart from our faith.  But it is absolutely necessary that faith works through love.

If we love God, we will keep his commandments.  And if we love God, we will love our neighbors.  And our faith becomes living faith through love, which is a love that is not an emotion but has tangible signs of both obedience and charity.  And while faith, hope and charity remain, the greatest of these is charity (love).

It's our duty as Christians, and Jesus Christ expects no less, that we point out false doctrine and condemn it. Paul suffered immensely and eventually gave his life for this cause.

We will stand before Christ one day and answer for what we did and didn't do concerning false doctrine. We will be held accountable for souls that were within our reach. I pray God, the blood of any lost souls fall not to our charge.

Excellent post Red!

SwordMaster

We agreed last year to debate in the one-on-one forum so as not to be molested by other posts, distracting our comments. I started this debate in the one-on-one forum under "Redbaker and Swordmaster - Salvation and "works."

I gave my opening statement and the first point (that one must have faith in order to gain eternal life), which we both agree to (I believe).

then I gave the second criteria for gaining eternal life, which you have decried in earlier posts as being a "work" - repentance.

the whole world waits for your reply.

The false gospel refered to in Galations is the teaching that we are to live by the ten commandments following conversion. Roms 7 clearly starts by saying that we had to die to the law in order to be espoused to Christ an thus subject to His authority, without commiting spiritual adultery against the law. We are saved by trusting in and obeying Christ. Not by trusting in Christ and yet continuing to obey the ten commandments
