Does anyone have a quick "idiot proof" way to assign a URL to a picture so that I can post it here?

You don't "assign" the URL.  You find the picture online, grab the URL, and enclose it in "Image" tags.

Do you mean:

a) an existing picture that is already available online?
b) a picture that is not online, for example a photo you made yourself?

b)

I take a pocture with my Iphone and save it as a jpeg file. We have to have a url to copy and paste into the [img]URL[/img] thing.

The type of thing Barbarian does with his travel pics here.

Jaime, you have to host the file to an image hosting site like TinyPic, it's fairly simple and you don't have to register.

If you're still unsure, I can offer a bit of a tutorial.

This forum doesn't seem to mind, but with many forums it's against the rules to "hotlink" images from the web, it's considered stealing bandwidth.

If you're gonna do that, at least do it the easy way; Right click on the image, copy image, paste it into your post.

I appreciate it Alan. A turorial might be just what I and other non-techies need.

Rella and Alan, I can do what you are talking about with existing pics on the web. I have always had problems posting a personal picture I have taken. The personal picture MUST have a URL assigned before posting. As has been said, a personal picture must be hosted by a site that you upload the picture to and that hosting site assigns a URL to the picture so you can cut and paste into the img thing.

I'm trying to do what Barbarian has done so proficiently here with his travel pics.

Jaime

I get the feeling that the forum could really be enhanced with more personal pics like Barbarian is doing. And I am pretty sure most here don't have a clue about how to post personal pics.

You have a strange (to put it kindly) of "the easy way."

If it's bad form to do what I did, get forum software that doesn't support [img] tags.

Most internet providers, when you sign up with them, also give you space on their server for a personal website.
That space is permanently connected to the internet, look at it as an external hard disk that can be approached at any time.
The first thing you need to do is upload your picture into that space.
You can find more information on how to do that on your provider's site.
If you do not have an account that gives you personal space on your provider's server, then you can use a public site like what Alan proposed above.

The idea is the same however, you have to park your pictures on a place in the internet.

Once your picture is posted in the webspace, it also has an URL.
For example: http://www.myprovider/myspace/photo.jpg
Or if you created a folder on the website: http://www.myprovider/myspace/folder/photo.jpg

Now you can use that address to link a post on this board to your photo.

Take Barbarian as example:

His picture URL looks as follows: https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4583/37778038804_cf93911384_b.jpg
Apparently Barbarian has an account with Flickr (www.flickr.com) and his pictures are uploaded into that webspace.
You can do the same.

Good luck

The forum does indeed support BB code but it also has built in switches that allow links without using url tags, or img tags in the case of linking web pictures.

Jaime, I've  now posted a Tutorial over in the Photography Forum.

Get a free account at Flickr.com.    You'll probably never need a Pro Account, but  I have one, just because I'm so happy with this service, and want to support them.  You get a huge storage capacity with the free account, and it works the same way.

Once you do that, you can click on the image, then click on the "sizes" button, and the just copy and past the image location.

You can then use the image button when you post, and paste in the location.

Easy, and it works for everything on other sites.

Well, shut my mouth.

I managed... not easlily , to get a Flicker account.

I had to use an entirely different email but finally got it.

I was confused when I finally got there but finally found an upload button and voila... the shown pic of my deceased Pom... Leo. (Yes, I know blurred)
Now if I can manage to bookmark the Flickr page I might be able to do this again.... or not ::frown:: (Kind of technically challenged)

That's one of the reasons I recommended TinyPic---> no account necessary, but once you learn how to upload and share the pictures, the other things are minor details regardless of which site you choose to use.

Before when you mentioned Tiny Pic I could do absolutely nothing there. That's why I had to ask you to post some for me in the past and also Mommydi.

Now I have managed to get an account on FlickR, bookmark the upload page , move the bookmark button to easy access.

But to do that I could not use my real Yahoo email address, I had to use a Gmail one, even though it required me to confirm by way of Yahoo.
