3 Resurrections

I know there are those here on this forum who are more familiar than I am with the book of 1 Enoch, which I have been reading and considering lately.  Whether one considers this book of 1 Enoch to be inspired or not is not important for the moment.

I have run into two different translations of a passage in 1 Enoch, and I would like to know why there is such a difference between them.  The passage I am looking at is the Book 5 Chapter 2 section entitled "Wisdom of Enoch", in the standard English version by Dr. Jay Winter.

This section lists Enoch's description of the "weeks" of history, in which Enoch begins with "I was born the seventh in the first week, while judgement and righteousness still endured."  We know that scripture tells us that Enoch was the seventh from Adam, which is duplicated here in Enoch's statement about himself in that first "week" of human history.

This section finishes up with Enoch describing a seventh "week" of human history, with Enoch stating "And after that in the seventh week shall an apostate generation arise, and many shall be its deeds, and all its deeds shall be apostate.  And at its close shall be elected, the elect righteous of the eternal plant of righteousness to receive sevenfold instruction concerning all His creation."

Now here is where other translations of this passage differ.  Other translations continue with Enoch describing an additional "eighth week", a "ninth week", and a "tenth week".

I would like to know why there is a difference between these translations.  Anybody have any idea?

Good question. I'll look forward to answers.

This is why I am questioning the difference between the translations of this passage in 1 Enoch.

Personally, I see scriptures indicating that the history of fallen mankind's existence will last a total of 7,000 years start to finish, or 7 millennial periods.  These seven millennial periods I believe were meant to mimic the seven days of creation week.  Many before me have also made this same connection.

If the translation of 1 Enoch having fallen mankind's history ending with the seventh "week" is correct, then of course this would align with human history being divided into 7 millennial periods before the final resurrection and judgment.

But if fallen mankind's total history is instead divided into ten "weeks" as the other translation of 1 Enoch has done, then this doesn't match up.

So I have a vested interest in the seven "week" total being correct rather than the translation with ten "weeks".

And I am one who would consider 1 Enoch to also be inspired.  There is so much phrasing in 1 Enoch duplicated in the OT and NT writings that it is almost as if the writers were copying bits of 1 Enoch as they wrote down the scriptures.

Personally, I believe Enoch the seventh from Adam (who was the only man ever translated so that he did not see death) was the same individual as the one titled Melchizedek, (having "no end of life"), and who was still alive on earth as Hebrews 7:8 tells us about Melchizedek.  This would explain why 1 Enoch was being written in the second century BC.  Enoch / Melchizedek would have still been alive on earth to write his own prophecies down in order to pass them on to the "elect righteous".

Ah, @3 Resurrections..... we finally agree on something... but not necessarily for the same reason.

It has been my belief that 7 weeks is correct.(Qualifying that being dependent on calendars and the way Enoch spoke of "I was born the seventh in the first week," .... oh well, I digress....

Not the least of which is that 7 has always been a number for God. One of completion , if you will.

Other then the Dr. Jay Winter translation and the way it is written
I have bits and pieces and some other completed manuscript. They are difficult, at best to navigate but I have posted from 2 of them below.

Unfortunately they open up more questions on 7 or 10 weeks then they answer.

I have found Winters's to be the easiest to read and understand, by layout. (No guarantee, I know as to accurateness)

Now, having been reading these I have managed to confused myself on this point because I felt that Winter's 7 weeks was correct but I have 2 other links I took time to copy here and now I wonder.

Yet the next link after this.... The 10 week outline past the 7 weeks
mentions Solomon's temple.

I dont know which links you have read that talks of 10 weeks but confirming that  of Winter's and the 7 week.... Winter's states

"19 And after that in the seventh week shall an apostate generation arise, and many shall be its deeds, and all its deeds shall be apostate.

20 And at its close shall be elected, the elect righteous of the eternal plant of righteousness to receive sevenfold instruction concerning all His creation.

21 For who is there of all the children of men that is able to hear the voice of the Holy One without being troubled?

THE BOOK OF ENOCHTHE PROPHET
TKANSLATED FKOM AN ETHIOPIC MS. IN THE BODLEIAN LIBEARY
BY THE LATE KICHARD LAURENCE, LL.D.
ARCHBISHOP OF CASHEL

DATED 1883....

PG 203

 CHAP. XCIL
1. After this, Enoch began to speak from a book.

2. And Enoch said. Concerning the children of righteousness, concerning the elect of the world,
and concerning the plant of righteousness and integrity.

3. Concerning these things will I speak, and these things will I explain to you, my children : I who am Enoch. In consequence of that which has been shown to me, from my heavenly vision and from the voice of the holy angels have I acquired knowledge;and from the tablet of heaven have I acquired understanding.

4. Enoch then began to speak from a book, and said, I have been born the seventh in the first week, while judgment and righteousness wait with patience.

5. But after me, in the second week, great wickedness shall arise, and fraud shall spring forth.

6. In that week ^ the end of the first shall take place, in which mankind shall be safe.

7. But when the first is completed,^ iniquity shall grow up ; and he shall execute the decree upon sinners.^

8. Afterwards, in the third week, during its completion, a man^ of the plant of righteous judgment shall be selected ; and after him the plant of righteousness shall come for ever.
( check the  footnotes, pg 204 and they suggest Abraham)

9. Subsequently, in the fourth week, during its completion, the visions of the holy and the righteous^
CHAP. XCIL 151 shall be seen, the order of generation after generation shall take 'place, and an habitation shall be made for them.^ Then in the fifth week, during
its completion, the house of glory and of dominion ^ shall be erected for ever.

10. After that, in the sixth week, all those who are in it shall be darkened, the hearts of all of them shall be forgetful of wisdom, and in it shall a man ^ ascend.

11. And during its completion he shall burn the house of dominion with fire, and all the race of the elect root shall be dispersed.^

12. Afterwards, in the seventh week, a perverse generation shall arise ; abundant shall be its deeds^
and all its deeds perverse. During its completion,
the righteous shall be selected from the everlastingplant of righteousness ; and to them shall be given
the sevenfold doctrine of his whole creation.
( seven fold.... there is the mention of 7 again and this for His whole creation??? Alluding to the end/completion)

13. Afterwards there shall be another week, the
eighth
of righteousness, to which shall be given a sword to execute judgment and justice upon all oppressors.

14. Sinners shall be delivered up into the hands
of the righteous, who during its completion shall acquire habitations by their righteousness ; and the
house of the great King shall be established for

celebrations for ever  After, this, in the ninth week, shall the judgment of righteousness be revealed to the whole world.

15. Every work of the ungodly shall disappear from the whole earth ; the world shall be marked for destruction ; and all men shall be on the look out for the path of integrity.

16. And after this, on the seventh day of the tenth week ,

( There we have another 7 mentioned, with the 10th week)
there shall be an everlasting judgment, which shall be executed upon the Watchers ; and a spacious eternal heaven shall spring forth in the midst of the angels.

17. The former heaven shall depart and passaway ; a new heaven shall appear ; and all the celestial powers shine with sevenfold

(sevenfold)
splendour for ever.Afterwards likewise shall there be many weeks, which shall externally exist in goodness and in righteousness.

18. Neither shall sin be named there for ever andfor ever.^ 19. Who is there of all the children of men, capable of hearing the voice of the Holy One without emotion ? 20. Who is there capable of thinking his thoughts?
^ The preceding six verses, viz. 13th, 14th, loth, 16th, 17th, and 18th, are taken from between the 14th and loth verses of the
nineteenth chapter, where they are to be found in the MSS. Butthe sense in this place seemed so manifestly to require them here, that I have ventured to transpose them.
CHAP. XCIII. 153 Who capable of contemplating all the workmanship
of heaven ? Who of comprehending the deeds of heaven ? 21. He may behold its animation, but not its spirit. He may be capable of conversing respecting
it, but not of ascending to it. He may see all the
boundaries of these things, and meditate upon
them ; but he can make nothing like them.
22. Who of all men is able to understand the
breadth and length of the earth ? 23. By whom have been seen the dimensions of
all these things ? Is it every man who is capable
of comprehending the extent of heaven ; what its elevation is, and by what it is supported ? 24. How many are the numbers of the stars ; and
where all the luminaries remain at rest ?

I find to be more then odd the way it is written. But it does get to the 10 week mention.... but not exactly directly. I have copied parts of it here directly from the original link.

Of note is the way this translation goes is it jumps the chapters around. It shows 93 before 91

Chapter 93

3 And Enoch began to recount from the books and said:

' I was born the seventh in the first week,

While judgement and righteousness still endured.

4 And after me there shall arise in the second week great wickedness,

And deceit shall have sprung up;

And in it there shall be the first end.

And in it a man shall be saved;

And after it is ended unrighteousness shall grow up,

And a law shall be made for the sinners.

And after that in the third week at its close

A man shall be elected as the plant of righteous judgement,

And his posterity shall become the plant of righteousness for evermore.

6 And after that in the fourth week, at its close,

Visions of the holy and righteous shall be seen,

And a law for all generations and an enclosure shall be made for them.

7 And after that in the fifth week, at its close,

The house of glory and dominion shall be built for ever.

8 And after that in the sixth week all who live in it shall be blinded,

And the hearts of all of them shall godlessly forsake wisdom.

And in it a man shall ascend;

And at its close the house of dominion shall be burnt with fire,

And the whole race of the chosen root shall be dispersed.

9 And after that in the seventh week shall an apostate generation arise,

And many shall be its deeds,

And all its deeds shall be apostate.

10 And at its close shall be elected

The elect righteous of the eternal plant of righteousness,

To receive sevenfold instruction concerning all His creation.

11 [For who is there of all the children of men that is able to hear the voice of the Holy One without being troubled ? And who can think His thoughts ? and who is there that can behold all the works

12 of heaven ? And how should there be one who could behold the heaven, and who is there that could understand the things of heaven and see a soul or a spirit and could tell thereof, or ascend and see

13 all their ends and think them or do like them ? And who is there of all men that could know what is the breadth and the length of the earth, and to whom has been shown the measure of all of them ?

14 Or is there any one who could discern the length of the heaven and how great is its height, and upon what it is founded, and how great is the number of the stars, and where all the luminaries rest ?]

[Chapter 91]

12 And after that there shall be another, the eighth week, that of righteousness,

(Pay attention people... In this one ... the way it is written...week 8
comes in chapter 91 before week 7 in chapter 93.
)

And a sword shall be given to it that a righteous judgement may be executed on the oppressors,

And sinners shall be delivered into the hands of the righteous.

13 And at its close they shall acquire houses through their righteousness,

And a house shall be built for the Great King in glory for evermore,

14d And all mankind shall look to the path of uprightness.

14a And after that, in the ninth week, the righteous judgement shall be revealed to the whole world,

b And all the works of the godless shall vanish from all the earth,

c And the world shall be written down for destruction.

(BUT: now we move to a mention of a tenth week in the SEVENTH part
)

15 And after this, in the tenth week in the seventh part,
There shall be the great eternal judgement,

In which He will execute vengeance amongst the angels.

The tenth week in the seventh part.....!!!!! Now we are back to 7.

16 And the first heaven shall depart and pass away,

And a new heaven shall appear,

And all the powers of the heavens shall give sevenfold light.

17 And after that there will be many weeks without number for ever,

And all shall be in goodness and righteousness,

And sin shall no more be mentioned for ever.

Yes.

The 8th-10th weeks are in all versions of Enoch, but the chapters are in a different order in some translations.

The historical manuscripts have these weeks BEFORE weeks 1-7, but many translators re-order them since it's fairly obvious that week 8 should follow week 7.  Others prefer not to mess with the text.

Jarrod, sorry...

I do not see week 8, 9 or 10 in Dr. JAY WINTER'S COMPLETE BOOK OF ENOCH

Admittedly I have not gone and reread the entire things of "his" yet but the way he wrote it he has it laid out in books...

"Book 5"

Chapter 1 Guidance of Enoch

Chapters 2 - 5 Wisdom of Enoch

Chapter 6 Revelation of Enoch

It is in chapter 2 he talks of the weeks....1 though 7......

I don't know who Jay Winter is, but I did the same scan you did and didn't find it there.  Strange.  It's also strange that he re-numbered all the chapters and verses - that makes it hard to find things.  And he's added several other texts to the end of the document that deal with angels/demons, but are not well-regarded.

I don't think I would trust him.

This is not a pretty page, but the text is faithful: https://www.ccel.org/c/charles/otpseudepig/enoch.htm

Here's the bit you're missing.  It's often located after Chapter 93, which is a strange place to find Chapter 91. :)

I know what you mean about the add ons....

The one, I keep forgetting about is one I wanted to check out for another of our favorite subjects.

But it is the into to Winter's book that makes it seem so authoratative.

It really is five books, and they deserve to be considered separately.  I am credulous of 2 and dubious of 1.  The other two I'm not sure what to do with.

3 Resurrections

Doing a little more digging on the ten "weeks"...

I notice there are two more references to a period of ten thousand years in 1 Enoch, in Chapter 18 and Chapter 21.

Enoch sees seven "stars" of heaven who are bound as punishment for disobeying the commandment of God "in the day of their rising", (whatever angelic sin that is referring to).  The angel interpreting the visions for Enoch tells him that these seven stars, the disobedient angels, will be bound until the ten thousand years of their punishment is completed.  (Presumably they will be released at that point?)

Now I am wondering if the tenth "week" Enoch was speaking about is related to the end of this ten-thousand-year period of punishment for these seven angels, in which Chapter 91:15 says God will "execute vengeance amongst the angels" (not judgment on humanity at this point in the chronology of the ten weeks).

I do believe that after seven millennial ages of fallen mankind's history is completed, that there will continue to be ages in eternity in which we are to be actively serving our Creator, and in which God eternally continues being engaged in creative activity and judgment of other realms.  Perhaps this 8th, 9th, and tenth "weeks" are related to ages of eternity, and not necessarily to mankind's fallen history up to our final judgment?

I see no reason why Enoch could not have been given visions of what would be taking place in the ages of eternity AFTER humanity's final judgment at the close of the seventh "week".  Thinking out loud here...

The weeks are a little hard to figure, and it may be that they are fulfilled twice.

For instance, it says that in week 7 "A man shall ascend."  If you count weeks of generations from Adam, as one would expect based on the rest of the book, then Elijah's ascent to heaven is the fulfillment of this prophecy.

But if you count the generations from Abraham instead, then Jesus fulfils this prophecy.  And it seems like Matthew may have had this in mind when he made the "genealogy" in the 1st chapter of his gospel:

Matthew 1:17
So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.

That's 3 double-weeks - 6 weeks - and Christ starts the 7th.

That also makes some other things work.  Enoch's "apostate generation" of week 7 lines up with Jesus "wicked and adulterous generation" of the New Testament, and the "election of the righteous" in Enoch at the end of that week now lines up with Paul and his talk of election.

I find that to be... too many coincidences.

3 Resurrections

Yep, the whole "weeks" thing is a bit vague, for sure.

But in reading the first four of those weeks, the history of the world lines up with recorded scripture quite well.

For instance, Enoch writes describing the first week...

"I was born the seventh in the first week, while judgment and righteousness still endured."  We know that Adam lived for almost a thousand years, and was contemporary with Enoch I believe for about 300 of those years.  Adam still had knowledge of his originally-righteous condition, and could pass on that knowledge about God to those living in those centuries.  And of course, Enoch was called the seventh from Adam, so that's a clear match.

For the second week...

"And after me there shall arise in the second week great wickedness, and deceit shall have sprung up; and in it there shall be the first end.  And in it a man shall be saved;..."  This is clearly the wickedness of man that Genesis 6:5 said was "great in the earth" before Noah's flood, which was the "first end" of the world as it used to be before that world-wide cataclysm.  And the man "saved" in it was of course Noah.  Noah appears in the second millennia of human history, born around 2948 BC, and some 600 years later the flood waters come.  All in the second millennium of human history.

For the third week...

"...and after it is ended" (when the flood ends) "unrighteousness shall grow up, and a law shall be made for the sinners."  Noah's son Ham and grandson Canaan commit an unrighteous offense against Noah and have judgment pronounced against them.  Nimrod arises and establishes Babylon, and idolatry flourishes. To control the rampant growth of wickedness, God divides the people of the earth into the nations by confounding the sinful inhabitants' speech at the tower of Babel; a law controlling their speech.

"And after that in the third week at its close a man shall be elected as the plant of righteous judgment and his posterity shall become the plant of righteousness for evermore."  Abraham is born, and is chosen by God in the third millennium of mankind's history to be the Father of many nations and the children of faith through all generations.  Abraham's posterity are established as the covenant nation of Israel, which provides the symbol for the "Israel of God", which would be the "plant of righteousness for evermore".

For the fourth week...

"And after that in the fourth week, at its close, Visions of the holy and righteous shall be seen, and a law for all generations and an enclosure shall be made for them."  Toward the close of the fourth millennium, Joel's prediction of the Holy Spirit being poured out on all flesh, with young men seeing visions, and old men dreaming dreams is fulfilled at Pentecost and following in the early church.  The "law for all generations" is the New Covenant in Christ's blood being made for all generations to be blessed with, and the "enclosure" made for them is probably the "one fold and one shepherd" with the Jews and Gentiles combined into One New Man.

Since all these things seem to be following a pattern of a "week" representing a full millennial period of human history, it seems consistent that the rest of the 5th, 6th, and 7th weeks would be the same.  We would then currently be sitting in the sixth millennium of human history, with the rise of the 7th week coming soon in our future (in about 9 years from now, by how I see scripture dividing up the millennial ages).

This seventh week Enoch calls "an apostate generation", performing "many deeds", but all of those deeds being apostate.  Would seem to fit what's coming in our near future, doesn't it?  But fortunately, at the close of this seventh week, Enoch predicts that the elect righteous will receive "sevenfold instruction concerning all His creation".  Fully-complete knowledge of God's works only available to "the elect righteous of the eternal plant of righteousness" - in the resurrected state.

Again, just thinking out loud here...
