Well, since my baby left me,
I found a new place to dwell.
It's down at the end of Lonely Street at
Heartbreak Hotel.

Although it's always crowded,
You still can find some room
For broken-hearted lovers
To cry there in their gloom.

That song, by Elvis Presley back in 1956, was very popular; and useful for depicting some of the conditions folks might expect in the netherworld should they end up on the wrong side of things. For example: just as Elvis' hotel always has a vacancy, so the netherworld too.

Prov 30:15-16 . . There are three things that will not be satisfied-- four that will not say, "Enough"

One of the four listed in that passage is Sheol, a.k.a. Hades which in Hellenistic culture spoke of the netherworld: a place in which all the dead were warehoused: both the good dead and the bad dead regardless of age, race, gender, or religious preference.

And then there's "cry there in their gloom"

Matt 13:40-42 . . As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world. The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; and shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Heb 6:4-6 . . For it is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age, if they fall away, to be brought back to repentance, because to their loss they are crucifying the Son of God afresh and subjecting him to public disgrace.

We know that with God nothing is impossible. So, I think we have to acquiesce that the impossibility spoken of here is so because God has made it His mission in life, so to speak, to assure that folks blessed with the level of advantages spoken of here are never to be given an opportunity to reconsider-- ever. The die is cast; e.g. Judas Iscariot. (cf. Prov 1:20-33 & Heb 10:28-31)

Matt 13:10 . . And the disciples came and said to him: Why do you speak to them in parables?

Matt 13:11 . . It is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.

Jesus answered their inquiry by referring to an incident in the 6th chapter of Isaiah's prophecy wherein God had lost interest in numbers of His people because they had lost interest in Him.

The Jews' spiritual condition was little different in Jesus' day, i.e. many were called but few chosen, and that's because the many were indifferent; which is not the appropriate response.

I'd imagine the hardest part about Heaven is not getting there, but staying there.

Some years ago it occurred to me that it's very easy for me to live in this world, but Heaven would require a level of piety and self control that I was pretty sure I couldn't keep up forever. Sooner or later I'd mess up and get thrown out. But if it were just as easy for me to live in Heaven as it is for me to live in this world, then for sure I'd never get thrown out of Heaven.

In other words: if only thinking, feeling, and acting like God came just as natural to me as thinking, feeling, and acting like a human; then that would be the cat's meow.

Deut 34:5-6 . . Moses the servant of The Lord died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of The Lord. And He buried him in the valley in the land of Moab, opposite Beth-peor; but no man knows his burial place to this day.

A very curious scene unfolded during Moses' burial. The Devil argued with Michael the archangel about Moses' body. (Jude 9)

It's been suggested that the Devil objected to secrecy. In other words; it's possible that he wanted Moses' body enshrined in a sort of Church of the Holy Sepulcher where the Jews could be lured into idolatry by adoring Moses' remains as a sacred relic. That's actually a very plausible suggestion. For example: there's a statue of the apostle Peter in Rome whose big toe has been eroded over the years by the lips of pilgrims kissing it. (cf. 2Kings 18:4)

Anyway; if the Devil would interfere with the burial of a holy man like Moses, then I think we can safely assume he (or one of his minions) probably interferes with the burials of ordinary folk too; and I should think the smartest way for him to interfere is to ensure the minister comes out with nothing useful in his eulogy; but instead with the usual mushy rhetoric by which nobody hearing it can be moved to consider their afterlife prospects. (Just goes to show that the Devil is not above walking over the bones of the dead to get what he wants.)

God prohibits dishonesty.

Lev 19:11 . . You shall not deal falsely, neither lie one to another.

I think it's probably safe to posit that more liars are now, and more liars will be, in Hell than any other category simply because deceit, deception, fraud, hoax, fibs, cover ups, slander, malicious gossip, propaganda, dissembling, cheating, false impressions, pretense, scams, sophistry, double-speak, rumors, half truths, and perjury are far more common.

Rev 21:8 . . . All liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.

Living in a world of liars below shouldn't be much different than living in a world of liars up here so that folks who end up down there should fit right in; requiring only minimal adjustment.

Ps 73:3-17 . . I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood I their end.

Matt 16:26 . . For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?

It's been my observation that many of the powerful folks controlling education, finance, manufacturing, governance, entertainment, food production, health care, pharmaceuticals, print media and broadcast news, etc, are quite lacking scruples, and conduct their affairs as if they're autonomous sovereigns with no one to answer to beyond the sphere of their existence; indifferent that the path of their success is leading them down a road of no return.

Gen 2:15-17 is a favorite among critics because Adam didn't drop dead within 24 hours of tasting the forbidden fruit. In point of fact, he continued to live outside the garden of Eden for another 800 years after the birth of his son Seth. (Gen 5:4)

Some say Adam died a so-called "spiritual" death, and that's true, but not entirely true, viz: the explanation isn't misinformation, rather, it's missing information. In other words: human life came out of the box with perpetual youth, which  Adam lost when he tasted the forbidden fruit.

The aging process is a lingering death rather than sudden death, i.e. it's slow, but very relentless. Mortality feels neither pain nor pity, nor remorse nor fear; it cannot be reasoned with nor can it be bargained with, and it absolutely will not stop-- ever! --until our useless corpse is ready for burial.

Eccl 7:2 . . It is better to go to a house of mourning than to go to a house of mirth, for death is the destiny of every man: the living should take this seriously. (cf. Luke 12:16-21)

NOTE: Superhuman bodies like Arnold Swarzenegger's look indestructible while young, but their youth isn't permanent. Today Arnold is pushing 76 and taking on the appearance of spoiling vegetables.

1Cor 4:4 . . My conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent.

During former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's assassination back in 2011, he was overheard to complain: Why are you doing this? I've done nothing wrong.

Former US President Richard Nixon once stated-- in so many words --that when a President breaks the law, it's not a crime.

The USA prohibits discriminatory hiring practices based upon age, race, or sex; yet when the opportunity came to replace one of the US Supreme Court justices, President Biden ignored fair hiring practices and announced his intention to nominate a black woman; thus effectively disqualifying all non black non female candidates solely upon the basis of their color and their gender.

Those three men serve to demonstrate just how unreliable the human conscience can be at times.

Man was created with as near a perfect conscience as a creature can be given.

Gen 1:27 . . God created Man in His own image, in the image of God created He him.

But then came the forbidden fruit incident by which Man's near-divine conscience underwent something that caused it to become that of a tin God.

Gen 3:22 . . The Lord God said: The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil.

Man was able to discern between good and evil before his fall, but that was by means of a conscience influenced by its maker. The forbidden fruit incident altered Man's conscience to become his own influence, i.e. Man became defensive, and he rationalizes a lot too. (Rom 2:14-15)

I think the writer of 1Cor 4:4 was well aware of just how tricky Man's conscience can be so he was reluctant to insist upon his innocence-- a little sophistry here and a little rationalizing there, and even incorrigible monsters like Communist China's Xi Jinping and North Korea's Kim Jong-Un can be persuaded in their own minds to believe themselves okay guys.

Jer 17:9-10 . .The heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick; who can understand it? . . . I, The Lord, search the heart, I test the mind, even to give to each man according to his ways, according to the results of his deeds.

The upside is: Christ's crucifixion not only serves to rescue people from their sins, but according to Heb 9:8-14 his death atones for their conscience too.

One of my favorite lines from the movie "Titanic" is when Mr. Ismay protests that the ship can't sink; and Mr. Andrews responds: She's made of iron, sir! I assure you, she can . . . and she will. It is a mathematical certainty.

There are folks at large all across the internet, and around the globe, sincerely believing that Hell isn't a place of conscious suffering. They, like Mr. Ismay, will be utterly stunned and bewildered to the limits of human astonishment to discover it's exactly that.

In the movie "Shawshank Redemption" a man is given two life sentences for murders he didn't commit. At first he feels very strongly that the truth will come out that he's innocent and doesn't belong in prison, i.e. he expects to eventually be exonerated and set free.

Well, one of the old-timers cautioned him about that with the advice: "Hope is a dangerous thing. Hope can drive a man insane. It's no use on the inside. You'd better get used to that idea."

I'd imagine that most new arrivals in Hell take quite a while to get used to the idea that it is what it is, i.e. they're never getting out.

Were Hell a normal penal colony like San Quentin or Riker's Island; then I think most folks would eventually settle down and accept it as a way of life. But the element of fire makes adjustment very difficult. If only there was at least some water to help folks beat the heat, that would be very helpful. And maybe recreation and/or something to occupy their minds like reading, writing, art, and construction projects. I really don't know how people keep from running mad with insanity from mental atrophy down there.

There are folks at large-- e.g. Jehovah's Witnesses, et al --who insist human life is entirely organic and does not survive the termination of one's material body. If it turns out those folks are resting upon a false premise, their disappointment will be very grievous.

Eccl 12:7 . . For then the dust will return to the earth, and the spirit will return to God who gave it.

The million dollar question is: What does God do with people's spirit once He gets it back?

And another: Is it possible peoples' spirits are transferable to a different form of existence than the one they have now: maybe even an existence that can withstand incineration?

Those are very, very disturbing questions; especially for Jehovah's Witnesses because they believe the angel Michael's life force was transferred to Mary's womb so he could exist as a human being without losing the essence of his identity; and then when his human existence passed away on the cross, Michael's life force was transferred back so he could pick up where he left off as an angel. Were I a JW, the Society's thoughts about life force would make me very nervous.

1Tim 6:7 . .We brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.

That rather blue note impacts everyone: both saint and sinner alike. Regardless of one's afterlife destination, we all suffer the loss of everything we hold dear: our photos, our collections, our mementos, our souvenirs, our hobbies, our favorite sights, sounds, and locations along with every project and every endeavor. And all those medals won recently during the 2024 Olympics in Paris will stay behind when the athletes who won them pass on.

I should think that even Heaven, though no doubt a nice enough place, is nevertheless a difficult adjustment for nostalgic folks.

I'm basically a yellow-bellied kind of guy. Although I was a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne division from Mar 1962 to Aug 1964, my enlistment was during a time of mostly peace when soldiering was more like scouting than killing.

I'm pretty certain that any "valor" I might've had at the time would've succumbed to blind panic had the Army taken me to Viet Nam before I got out. So; when I found out that Jesus was willing to take a fall for me I jumped at the chance-- no hesitation.

Now, I've known some really stand-up guys, both in and out of the Army, who would be utterly disgusted with me for taking a coward's way out of retribution because not on your life would they pass the buck like I did. If there's hell to pay; they'll be paying it themselves-- their choice --because in their mind's eye; death without honor is unacceptable.

* It's ironic that strong men and women determined to stand on their own two feet before God are fools, whereas chicken-livered weaklings like myself, who've traded our dignity for the safety of the cross, are wise.

COMPLAINT: I am very envious of those people in the Old Testament; to the point of hatred because God took a special interest in people like Noah, Abraham, Hagar, Isaac, Jacob, Ruth, Samson, et al, but not me, no; I'm marginalized in a haze of uncertainty about my afterlife.

REPLY: Actually, that was yours truly at one time before discovering that God was thinking of me when Jesus went to the cross for the sins of not just part of the world rather, all of the world. I was definitely on His guest list and so are you.

Isa 53:6 . .We all, like sheep, have gone astray-- each of us has turned to his own way; and The Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Now all you have to do is RSVP, out loud or under your breath, and let God know, in your own words, you have yet to live up to His standards and likely never will. Then, tell God you'd like to take advantage of His son's crucifixion to protect yourself from retribution.

* Don't be reluctant to do as I say because God and His son have gone to a lot of trouble and inconvenience to set this up and we do not want to disappoint them like those silly morons who talked their way out of the banquet per Luke 14:16-24.

FAQ: The Old Testament has lots to say about retribution in this life, while scarcely anything about it in the afterlife. Why is that?

REPLY: If we may safely assume the Old Testament's authors were inspired, then I think we have to concede that God deliberately delayed the lion's share of written words relative to the afterlife for a purpose. In point of fact, much of what we know about retribution in the afterlife came much later via His son Jesus rather than Moses and the prophets.

I suspect folks in the Old Testament knew about retribution in the afterlife, but not from inspired writings. For example Abraham was informed of Christ coming to die for the sins of the world (John 8:56) but there's nothing in the Old Testament telling of his having that information about Christ. In other words: people knew a lot of things back then that weren't written down for posterity.

NOTE: There is a logical fallacy called an Argument From Silence which insists that when certain information is missing from an historical document, therefore such information never existed. That's a ridiculous notion of course but nevertheless often successful in discussions.

Phil 1:29 . . For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for him.

Suffering for Christ doesn't necessarily include martyrdom. The more common forms of suffering are privation, humiliation, threats, hunger, loss of friends and family, ostracizing, ridicule, mockery, harsh criticism, judgmental remarks, insults, intimidation, name calling, demeaning comments, ugly insinuations, slander, teasing, harassment, bullying, unfairness, prejudice, intolerance, disassociation, treachery, and betrayal; in other words, the kinds of stuff that really get you right down in the gut.

Anyway, point being; not everyone's life counts towards something permanent. For example: when most folks finish up, they cross over with nothing to show for their years in this life, viz: the were born, they lived, and they died-- that's about it.

In contrast, Christ's followers will have lots to show for their time in this life.

Rom 8:16-18 . .The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs-- heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.

Mark 9:47-48 . . If your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out. It is better to enter the kingdom of God half blind than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell; where the worm never dies and the fire never goes out.

Punishment by parasites is unusual but not unheard of; for example:

Acts 12:21-23 . . On an appointed day Herod, wearing his royal robes, sat on his throne and delivered a public address to the people. They shouted: This is the voice of a god, not of a man. Immediately, because Herod did not give credit to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died.

The exact species of worms spoken of here has yet to be identified with certainty. It's believed possible by some that the worms centered upon his bowels like termites and carpenter ants; so that Herod must've been in extreme agony towards the end.

The point to note in this case is that Herod survived with the critters for a while before finally becoming too weak to carry on. The poor man was literally eaten to death.

The Scribes and Pharisees were highly respected in their communities. No doubt quite a few people believed them as they went about insinuating that Jesus was a sorcerer.

John 10:29 . . My sheep . . my Father gave them to me

Now, those sheep weren't exactly a freebee, viz: the sheep didn't come cheap. Jesus bought and paid for them himself at enormous personal expense.

1Pet 1:18-19 . . For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.

There are people out and about who sincerely believe that Jesus' sheep-- having been bought and paid for at the price of his own blood --are in a position to negotiate the terms of their association with him. They actually believe their rightful owner should stand aside while they disown him sans fair and equitable compensation, and walk out the door to start a new life elsewhere, possibly with some other rancher, maybe even one of his competitors.

There's some apropos lines from a movie called The Hunt For Red October that go like this:

Dr. Ryan: We definitely grab the boat, sir.

National Security Advisor: Hey, wait a minute. We're not talking about some stray pilot with a MIG. We're talking about several billion dollars worth of Soviet state property. They're gonna to want it back.

If you did, you would quit spamming every Christian forum on the web with the garbage you teach.

You think God is looking down at you and smiling and giving you Brownie Points, when in reality he is probably shaking his head in disgust.

Sheep are pretty good at bonding with their shepherd. For example Jesus said:

John 10:3-6 . .The sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger's voice.

Now if I'm reading that right, it appears to me that Jesus' sheep need not fret themselves wondering who to follow. No, when they hear his voice, they each know for themselves he's the one without needing somebody to point him out.

It's interesting that the sheep seem not to go by facial recognition, nor are they guided by the clothes their shepherd has on. No, it's his voice that connects with them.

Sheep aren't the only ones. There's a raccoon that comes thru our backyard whom I've routinely fed and watered for a number of years. Even after all this time that critter still keeps a wary eye on me until I speak to it with the words: "Hey little coon, don't bite me." Then it calms right down.

Curiously the rapture per 1Thess 4:13-18 is voice-activated. It won't begin to unfold till Christ begins shouting. I suspect not everyone on earth will react because only his own are attuned to his voice. No doubt people around them will be puzzled why all of a sudden they're looking up.

They say every cloud has a silver lining. Whether that's so or not matters little as one should never let disagreeable circumstances make them bitter and resentful towards God; for example:

Job 1:20-22 . .Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head, and he fell to the ground and worshiped. And he said: Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I shall return there. The Lord gave and The Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of The Lord. Through all this Job did not sin nor did he condemn God.

Hab 3:17-18 . . Although the fig tree fails to blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labor of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no food; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: yet I will rejoice in The Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation.

I was right in the middle of the Cuban missile crises as a young US Army paratrooper with the 101st Airborne division back in 1962. My unit was fully armed and equipped, ready to be in the air within one hour had President Kennedy given us the green light. A confluence of time and circumstances made me a part of that incident. In other words: it was just dumb luck.

But it wasn't dumb luck that led me to Christ, no, it was his Father that led me, and not by happenstance, rather, by a deliberate effort born out of God's sincere desire to do what's best for me even as a man with a history of vandalism, dishonesty, theft, arson, and animal cruelty.

John 6:44 . . No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him.

FAQ: Why do so many conventional Christians insist it is necessary to believe Jesus' crucified dead body was restored to life?

REPLY: None of the Old Testament sacrifices were restored to life. Their bodies all remained deceased: some of them were even used for food, and the remains of others were incinerated outside the camp. So it's logical to expect that Jesus' body would remain deceased.

However; every resurrection recorded in the Bible-- both the new testament and the old --restored people's dead body to life. But there is another matter of far greater consequence to consider.

Rom 4:25 . . He was delivered over to death for our sins, and was raised to life for our justification.

The first half of that verse speaks of Isa 53:6 which reads like this:

"We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and The Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all."

But although Jesus' crucifixion satisfies justice for people's iniquity, the people remain guilty; similar to when speeders pay a fine for going too fast. Their payment satisfies justice for speeding, but the broken law stays on the books. In other words: a paid fine clears no one of the crime.

The second half of Rom 4:25 speaks of justification-- translated from the Greek word dikaíoosin which basically pertains to acquittal: defined as an adjudication of innocence due to a lack of sufficient evidence to convict.

In other words: Jesus' crucified dead body had to be restored to life to make it possible for sinners to be granted exoneration. Were Jesus' body to remain deceased, nobody would get past the books spoken of by Rev 20:11-15 where the losers will be subjected to a mode of death akin to a foundry worker falling into a kettle of molten iron.

* Were I the Devil, I would make it my mission in life to invalidate Christ's physical resurrection because by means of its acceptance sinners have the opportunity to be cleared of all wrong-doing from first to last. Failure to believe his crucified dead body was restored to life will result in people's loss of the one God-given opportunity to wipe the books; and thus they'll remain on a direct path to the wrong side of things even though their iniquity was forgiven by means of Christ's crucifixion.

1Cor 15:17 . . If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins.

Here's a question that not even God can answer.

Heb 2:1-3 . .We must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. For if the word spoken through angels proved unalterable, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense, how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation?

The Greek word translated "neglect" basically means to ignore, disregard, set aside, to make light of, viz: assign a low priority.

I watched an interesting lecture on YouTube recently during which the speaker asked, in so many words: What do a great number of folks in Hell have in common other than their circumstances? The answer given was stupidity, and I think I have to agree.

Jesus told a parable about some folks who were adequately catechized but let day to day concerns distract them from taking action on the information they were given. In other words they procrastinated; probably intending to getting around some day to thinking about their afterlife prospects.

He told another parable wherein a number of folks invited to a wedding found a variety of excuses not to attend. The host was wroth and banned the original guests so that even if they changed their minds about attending, they would not be allowed.

Well; I think the Bible is telling us that Heaven has little patience with things like neglect, indifference, and procrastination. It says, in so many words: If you hear the message, don't delay to respond because now is your time, today is your opportunity for salvation.

The message, it its basic form, is very simple.

Heb 2:9 . .We see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

Isa 53:6 . . All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and The Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

The only thing those dummies in Hell had to do to avoid that awful place was RSVP God with a simple prayer in their own words that goes like this:

"Lord, I know I'm a sinner. I would like to take advantage of your son's death."

Those sixteen words would've made a tremendous difference in their afterlife situation but no, they let the opportunity to make peace with God slip thru their fingers.

Heb 12:25-26 . . See to it that you do not refuse Him who speaks. If they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, how much less will we, if we turn away from Him who warns us from heaven?

One of the men with whom I worked in a boatyard back in the decade of the 1970s said he wouldn't mind Hell all that much because he'll have lots of friends there, but I can't help but wonder if he'll be able to find any of them because Jesus said the majority has been ending up down there.

Well, souls have been filtering into perdition not only the past 2,000 years since Christ, but also since before the Step Pyramid of Djoser, and even before the Flood and the Tower of Babel. I won't speculate how many years have gone by since Cain and Abel, but I've heard it said it's at the very least something like 6,000 years. If the majority really has been going there like Jesus said: then sixty centuries would amount to a very large number of souls to search for that man's friends.

The bodies and souls headed for the lake of fire depicted by Rev 20:11-15 are slated for termination.

Matt 10:28 . . Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in Hell.

The thing is: a dead soul is no longer a sentient soul, neither is a dead body a sentient body. So then, it appears to me that the bodies and souls of the people terminated in the lake of fire will become unresponsive; consequently the people will quite possibly be unable to communicate.

I can't help but envy God. He's above it all; safe and secure and never in any danger of war, natural disasters, disease, economic calamities, old age, and most especially perdition.

But us? We're like insects, no, worse than that, we're as helpless, as fragile, and as vulnerable as the vegetation that's been burning in Los Angeles.

Isa 40:6-8 . . All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field. The grass withers and the flowers fall, because the breath of The Lord blows on them. Surely the people are grass. The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever.

Eternal life is often mistaken for immortality. The two are not the same.

Immortality pertains to a body that's immune to death.

Eternal life, on the other hand, pertains to a soul that's immune to death.

It's possible for people to obtain eternal life prior to obtaining immortality.

For example: Christ had eternal life all along (John 5:26, 1John 1:1-2) but according to Rom 6:9 and Rev 1:18, he didn't obtain immortality till after his crucified dead body was restored to life.

Likewise his believing followers have eternal life now (John 5:24, 1John 5:13) but according to Rom 8:23-25, 1Cor 15:51-53, and 1Thss 4:14-17 they won't obtain immortality until their resurrections.

NOTE:  Eternal life and immortality are very important benefits primarily because they protect people from the second death depicted by Rev 20:11-15.

Matt 10:28 . . And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in Hell.

1Tim 2:5-6 . . Christ Jesus, who gave himself as ransom for all.

Ransoms can be defined as considerations paid or demanded for the release of someone or something that's stuck in a situation; e.g. overwhelming debt that a debtor cannot possibly ever pay off, and or slavery from which the slave himself hasn't, nor will ever have, the means with which to free himself.

The thing is: were it not for Christ, the best that God would be able to offer anybody is a reprieve: defined as a temporary suspension of the execution of a sentence especially of death, i.e. delay. In other words: there's coming a day when the demands of Heaven's criminal justice system will finally be given its pound of flesh, and that day would be humanly impossible to circumvent were it not for Christ's crucifixion per Isa 53:5-6.

Gen 13:13 . .The men of Sodom were wicked exceedingly, and sinners against The Lord.

In other words: the Sodomites weren't just defiant; they were outright impudent; knowing full well that their ways were offensive to God, but they didn't care whether He liked it or not.

Gen 4:1 . . Now the man had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain.

Gen 4:2 . . Later she gave birth to his brother Abel.

Cain and his kid brother Abel share a lot in common. In fact, they share so much in common that their individual personalities must be an enigma to behavioral scientists.

Neither man came from a large gene pool because Adam and his wife had no ancestors. The boys had the same parents, lived in the same home in the same neighborhood, grew up with the same customs, ate the same food, associated with the same people, breathed the same air, and survived in the same environment. Both men were living souls per Gen 2:7, and both men existed by means of the same breath of life..

And both were religious-- in point of fact Cain worshipped the very same God that his brother Abel worshipped.

But souls are not the result of cookie-cutter manufacturing processes. Souls are sentient individuals with a mind of their own. For example Abel was righteous (Heb 11:4)) but Cain, although he was religious; wasn't righteous. (Gen 4:7) And he was violent too. (1John 3:11-12)

Friends are sometimes at a loss for words at funerals. At a time like that it's not a bad idea to remind grieving survivors that their loved ones aren't lost forever like road kill.

1Thess 4:13 . . Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope.

Some folks' perception of reality is based upon personal experience and empirical evidence. To them, death is the end-all; nobody is coming back so of course their grief would be quite a bit more intense than that of Christians because in our religion there's a resurrection, viz: the loss of loved ones is only temporary, i.e. they aren't lost forever like road kill.

1Thess 4:16-18 . . Wherefore comfort one another with these words.
