There are a lot of teams with great starting pitching this year.  Which one do you think rises to the top.  

I think the Cubs and Astros are neck and neck, but I give the edge to the Astros because of Prior's injury and Maddux's age.

The worst starters in baseball?  Without a doubt it is the Texas Rangers.

I went with the A's because of the big three.  I think Maddux is a good candidate for a permanent drop-off, and numbers four and five on the Cubs' staff haven't shown consitency.  Also, I'm not yet convinced that both Clemens and Pettite will make smooth transitions to the National league.  But we'll see.

Well, Pettitte and my Astro's are off to a rocky start.  They'll turn it around and be right there to challenge the Cubs.

I was going to comment about you "FORGETTING" to include the Rangers in your poll, thought it MIGHT have been an OVERSIGHT (like the World Series poll).

I'm fixing to develop an inferiority complex... Kenny Rogers, Chan Ho Park, Colby Lewis, uh, what's his name, and the other guy and that young AA pitcher they called up, and uh, well uh, didn't they keep a high schooler that threw ONE strike in Spring Training..yeh..I think that's right .... yeh, they were going to let him be opening day then thought they would keep him as their Ace in the hole....

I had forgotten about him.....we HAVE used high schoolers BEFORE!

I believe last year...

(was it last year?? days, weeks, years...they all run together....where's my pills???)

...when they had a "David Clyde Day" at the ballpark ... one of the papers said he only needed like 27 days more service and he would qualify for a Baseball Pension... he walked away at 26 or 27 years old (if my memory serves).

There was talk, at that time, that he was in discussions for a minor league pitching coaching job with the Rangers .... could sure help the Rangers keep 'em in check to not USE any other young pitchers before they are ready for "The Big Show".  But never heard anymore about that....guess I could checkup on that piece of Baseball Trivia .....

Roger Clemens - 7 shutout innings.  National League hitters can't hit against him either.

I'm going to have to think this one over and talk to the folks at the convenience store.  

However, I did listen to the Rangers-A's game yesterday on mlb.com and the Rangers pitching was certainly top-notch that game.

The choice seems to be between the first four you have listed there, Spurly.  Right now it seems if given the choice of the four, most would be indifferent.

Yep.  Colby Lewis did a bang up job.  He may be their best starter.

You can go to mlb.com and for $14.95 have complete access to listen to any of the baseball games played this season.  For more, you get a lot more stuff.  I watched a game last night in about 20 minutes.  The deciding pitch of each at bat is shown - put in play, 4th ball, 3rd strike - and the base running and fielding action.  Real cool.  

You can also pull up a box score and see the action that went into a player's stats.

Stuff like that.

Haven't they read "Moneyball"?  Don't they know that actually watching baseball fills your head with prejudices and keeps you from knowing anything about it?  And having played baseball is even worse; that can give you all kinds of improper ideas about the game.

The only way to become a baseball expert is to isolate yourself in a basement and study stat sheets. :rolleyes:

Sorry.  I just read Michael Lewis' self-defense article in the SI of a few weeks back.  Perhaps I should start a new thread on the pros and cons of sabremetrics, or whatever they call it.

Who knows maybe things will pull together for the Rangers...

According to the stats at MLB.Com. the best pitching through Saturday was the Marlins, as measured by ERA.  However, I haven't found stats yet on which team has commited the most brawl-inducing beanings.  Whoever that is, that is my favorite pitching staff.
