since i always wake up too early :eek:, i thought i'd give myself something to read tomorrow morning. come on in to this new establishment (faith of the gourmet apostolic coffee bar)
and 'spout' your ideas for pre-dawn scholars.
perhaps we'll find you indeed have 'grounds' for your notions.
leave monetary donations in that big mug in the narthex of the capuccinos.

I think I've heard most in our congregation call it the foyer (mostly "foy'-yur", a few "fwah-yay'"). I just checked the etymology, and found that foyer originally meant a room with a fireplace; we definitely don't have that!

"Narthex" always sounded like part of the nose to me. Of course, "nave" makes me think of an umbilicus...

I have heard our referred to as an auditorium and then also as a sanctuary. We have some beautiful stained glass down front (Jesus carrying a little lamb) which makes me more inclined to call it a sanctuary.

Sanctuorium? I think we get a mix, with maybe a majority leaning to auditorium. I don't like either word very much, but haven't come up with a good alternative. Sanctuary means holy place (that should be us, not a building), and auditorium implies passive listening.

"multi-purpose room"/"family room"/"fellowship hall" depending on who's talking.

I prefer "multi-purpose room" because "family room" seems kind of forced to me.

I don't much like it because the selection of songs is very limited and most of my favorites aren't available.

I am sorry to get to the discussion late. We have:

1. The Hall and "out front." But if we had one, it would be a "FOY errr" -- We ain't no pasty faced little sissy britches.

2. A multi-pupose room complete with lines for basketball and/or volleyball. The goals and nets stay in the closet during worship.

3. Songbooks AND computer projection [although we have some other software the preacher likes better than power point]. And by the way, Howard publishes a projectable software package that has pretty much the whole songbook [the big one whatever the name is] in it. If there are any differences, I am not aware of them. Much better than Paperless Hymnal.

Hey dj, do you have bible class or sunday school before worship on Sunday am? I think we mostly have bible class, although there are a few sunday school afficianados around.

BOG, we also use Paperless, and have a subscription so that we get corrections and updates. When we started using it three or four years ago, it was quite limited, but they've added lots of songs. It's becoming more and more rare that we can't find an older song in TPH, though they still have an understandable lag on newer material.
