Janine,

We lived in Slidell from 1985 until 1989, when our 2 daughters were ages 2 - 6, and new-born to 4 (that's right, our youngest daughter, now 17, is a LA native).

I remember well taking them to the parades held in Slidell leading up to Fat Tuesday, and they loved catching the trinkets thrown their way.  We were much to wise to take them (or ourselves) into N'awlins on the big day itself - we just enjoyed a quiet Tuesday at home together, since schools and businesses were closed.

During the years we lived there, the Krewe of Zulu (I think it was Zulu) was prohibited from their tradition of throwing coconuts off their floats to the crowd (pending lawsuits and worries about liability).  I don't know if they ever brought that back.

As to a name for a Krewe from GCM, how about we get at least one good thing from the Summer's article and call it the Krewe of GOBEG?

I miss only two things about living in Louisiana, Janine, the people, and the food!

Krewe of GOBEG
I love it...sounds mysterious!

Janine,

If we were to go with the Krewe of GO BEG, I wonder what our signature throw would be?

Hee hee.  "Don't Be Krewe(l)"

I've met some Presleyterians.

Look here for a fairly complete list of the groups throwing parades (or walking in them) through the Mardi Gras season.

Some of the names of the krewes are priceless... I wonder if the "Half Fast Walking Club" made the list?  That's famous and old.  "Krewe of Save de Children", "Krewe of Aliases".

These groups parade, hold formal balls, do charity work, etc.

What would we name our Grace Centered Magazine Forum Krewe?

Maybe we could combine a love of Elvis with a fond memory of Romper Room and call ourselves "the Don't Bee Krewe(l)"

janine

"Go Beg"?  As in "T'row me sumptin', Mistah![/b]", waving the hands and begging for largesse from the "king"?
:D
I like the smaller communities putting together krewes.  Keeps families nearer home, less nastiness.  Less likely some idiot will pull a stupid stunt involving nudity or drunkeness or theft or assault or lewdness or all five.

I wonder, does the Krewe of Choupic over in Choupic throw choupic? (bowfin, "cypress trout")

Warning...brief thread highjack
Duckman: For whatever it's worth...you were right this morning about when to stop discussions.  I'll try to listen to you next time!
