If you 'count' someone who was supposed to have grown up in a coC congregation, and I assume became a Christian and lived that way for at least a while... there's Jim Jones, he of the dark shades and the Kool-Aid massacre.

If you count someone who had some 'exposure' to the Lord's church as a child, but didn't convert until he studied as an adult & then died... there's Jeffrey Dahmer.

Was the question "famous" alone, or can we include "infamous"?

Rocketman

I for some reason find this to be a fascinating thread.

I was about to mention David Robinson but see Lee beat me to the punch. I was visiting Oak Hills in San Antonio once and he was there that day.  Amazingly tall too.

I don't know if its been mentioned but Don Williams the country singer is a member of the cofc. Someone said he at one time served as an elder, but I dont know if that is true or not.

Gene Stallings former University of Alabama coach was mentioned.  Current Auburn University head coach Tommy Tuberville is a member.

I believe Charlie Daniels is now a member. I heard an interview on CMT where he said he attended a church of Christ.

Rob Evans head basketball coach at Arizona State I think is a member and son of a cofc preacher.  Rob coached at Ole Miss at one time.

David unfortunately this goes to show you that you cannot always believe what preachers say  ???   That gives me no pleasure to say because I is one  ;)

Man I wish preachers wouldn't say such things . . .  ;)
I know what you mean.  I too wish preachers would stop going around telling lies. :D  :p

[!--QuoteBegin--][/span]

Quote (Seeker @ June 12 2002,5:08)

[!--QuoteEBegin--]David Lloyd George the British Prime Minister? He was Church of England for his career but I believe he had a youth among what we would call Primitive Baptists, who aslo teach that they are the full embodiemnt of the 1st century church restored.
Yes, I looked into that one to make sure it was true.  Lloyd-George was raised and baptised in the CoC, but over in England they are more like the DoC.  When he became PM and moved to London there was no church of Christ to worship at so he worshiped with the Primitive Baptists. I do not know what happened to him later after his years in government.  He died in 1944.

Edgar Casey, famous "mystic" (begins in mist and ends in schism), was a DoC; though I think that he mad MAJOR issues w/ his mother....

The present mayor of Cleveland is an (woman) elder in Shaker Heights Christian Church, Jane Campbell (yowza! there's a name); her mum, the Rev. Joan Brown Campbell, was past head of the National Council of Churches:  what a firebrand and prophet!

The Campbellites are coming, help! :p

Let's not forget, Vachel Lindsay, either, "General William Booth enters heaven", and his "Alexander Campbell" thrilogy and poetic cycle.  Another DoC!

Hello,

For the sake of historical inquiry, who here knows of any well known folks who are/were members of the CoC/DoC/CC?

I know about these guys:

James Garfield
David Lloyd George
Lyndon Johnson (well, maybe not  ;) )
Pat Boone
Fred Gwynn (played Herman Munster on "The Munsters")
Jock Mahoney--- I think
Bob Bullock

I have heard Roger Stauback was CoC but never could find out if this was true.  Anyone know about this or anyone else?

OldDad

Here a a few from the CC to add to your list:

Dan Issel - former coach of Denver Nuggets, currently unemployed.

Rich Mullins - Contemporary Christian music artist.  Deceased.

John Y. Brown - former owner of KFC, and former governor of Kentucky.  Member, at one time, of Southland CC in Lexington.

Phyllis George - wife of John Y. Brown.  Former Miss America? and morning show host.

Also heard a rumor a few years back that Paul Harvey was DoC...Can anyone confirm or deny?

Hi Everyone,

I think this is interesting discussion.

I know that Dolly Parton is NOT DOC/COC/CC. She is Catholic.

Here are the COC people I know of:
*David Robinson of the San Antonio Spurs
*Byron Nelson, a former great pro golfer
*Marty Roe, lead singer of Diamond Rio
*Wierd Al Yankavich, novelty/spoof singer
*Opra Winfrey USED TO BE. Now she is new age.
*Walt Aldrege, song writer
*Gene Stallings, former University of Alabama head coach.

I have heard that Abraham Lincoln was a member, but I am not sure.

Lee Wilson

I did not realize so many folks came out of the Campbell Movement.

Seeker

David Lloyd George the British Prime Minister? He was Church of England for his career but I believe he had a youth among what we would call Primitive Baptists, who aslo teach that they are the full embodiemnt of the 1st century church restored.

If Seeker is an atheist she should come out and be honest about it.  I did and feel that is the respectful thing to do towards the other GCM board members.  We have all shared some things about our lives and beliefs here and Seeker should do the same.

susieface

There are a few in the country music field.  Glenn Campbell, Loretta Lynn, Randy Travis,  Amy Grant, Dottie West.
About all i know, other than some you listed.

A contemporary figure is Lestor Holt a fine African-American news anchor on MSNBC.  He and his wife are from Sacramento California and now worship with the Manhattan Church of Christ in NYC.

He appears on the Today Show occasionally.

bobby & y'all:

i did hear a preacher say abe received baptism at the hands of an rm minister.  i was not told that the late president worshipped after that fashion.  he's ok fer as yankees go!

Emily

Lee, Dolly got married in my aunt's church in Nashville (Church of Christ).  I was told she did not attend there because of the distraction she caused.

I just recently read an article in the Christian Chronicle by Todd Beamers dad.  He stated the entire family were members of a Church of Christ at the time of 9/11 and still are.  Where? cannot remember.
Susie

Chriscar mentioned that part of Bush's Transition team were members of the C of C in FL.  One of them goes to church with me in Panama City, FL.  His name is William Harrison.

Oh and I just realized that I misspelled Rinestone in my last post.  Sorry, there's no spell-check on this thing.

Seeker

David Lloyd George as CoC. That raises my estimation of your denomination. He was an astute man - he knew the Roman Catholic Church was not merely the source of all error but also the worst threat to freedom in his time, he knew the Irish were the most violent savage Catholics of all whose use of violence to fight the English proved they were unfit for freedom, he knew modern democracies must liberalize and add social services to aid their citizens from cradle to grave.

janine

It's comments like that, that make some of us wonder if "Seeker" is the evil alter-ego of some nicer current poster.

Surely, to have good spelling and grammar and sentence structure and a concise writing style like that, and still post such twaddle, the whole thing must be a queasy effort by some poster from that atheist board.

Like, either "Seeker" thinks we are a bunch of cement-headed "conservatives", and is "seeking" to fit in with us (!!); or, "Seeker" thinks we are a bunch of feather-headed "liberals", and is tossing a fox among the chickens to see how we'll squawk & run around.

Rocketman

Regarding Weird Al Gore, he is not a member of the cofc, however, his mother is.  I forget what his father was, but it was not cofc and he attended both growing up.  So  he had exposure to the cofc but it obviously never got through to him   :D

I know this because a person in our congregation is the granddaughter of Al Gore SR's long time campaign manager.

Regarding the other Weird Al, I believe that he is a member in California.

david johnson

singer barbara fairchild is a member and grew up a few miles from my hometown.
i've been trying to find out about sgt. york, but i'm stuck on whether he was a member of the 'church of christ in christian union' of tn, or the 'church of christ' in christian union, tn.  right now i'm leaning toward the former.

Bill

dj, I was thinking as I clicked on this thread that we had not listed the most famous person in this movement and then I scrolled down to your post and lo & behold you listed Him.  It just might be if He were posting here the names He listed would be different than ours.  Guess it is how we define famous.

I heard Dolly Parton in an interview once, talking about her childhood churchgoing and her extended family's church(es)... I remember thinking "Hey, that's us!"...  Anyone heard anything re: Dolly?

David unfortunately this goes to show you that you cannot always believe what preachers say  ???   That gives me no pleasure to say because I is one  ;)

It is a myth that Lincoln was a member of the Stone-Campbell Movement.  Lincoln's religion is not what most would dignify as "Christian" at all much less Campbellite.  He did, however, have some dealings and associations with folks who were Disciples (as we were all known by in the 19th century).

Here is a link to an article dedicated solely to the myth of "Abraham Lincoln's Secret Baptism published in Restoration Quarterly.  It is not very long but it is interesting:

Man I wish preachers wouldn't say such things . . .  ;)

I did not know about "Weird" Al.  But Abraham Lincoln was not.

Dolly seems, at least in her public persona, to really appreciate flash and sparkle.  Seems like she could get a lot more of that in Catholic circles/life/ceremonies!  (Speaking as a 20+ yr Catholic, y'see...)

I was going by childhood memories & family associations in that snippet of info from an old interview...

janine

Rhinestone.  Like the river Rhine. :D

"Like a stoned Rhine boy cow
     Riding out in a go-cart
     Without any gasoline
Man, them bumps sure can be mean..."

Yet another parody from my childhood.  I obviously had too much free time on my hands...

Seeker

Dolly Parton was for years a CoC member in Nashville. I had a school friend whose father preached where she attended.

Somebody told me Weird Al Yankovic is or was CoC. Alice Cooper was raised United CoC and it has, as I hear people say Restoration roots and heritage.

Waylon Jennings was CoC but left it to find grace.

janine

I wonder was ol' Waylon washed out of our fellowship for his wild ways before he wended his way tward gwace.... uh, toward grace? :p

A highly generalized statement. Very insulting and prejuidiced.

marc

Mercury astronaut (and accident victim) Virgil "Gus" Grissom grew up in the CoC.  In "The Right Stuff" Tom Wolfe noted that the Church of Christ was so conservative they didn't even use instrumental music  Also, wasn't Reagan DoC?.  Not sure if he qualifies as a historical figure, but Sonny James, "The Country Gentleman" from a few generations back, was an elder at Woodmont Hills when I was there.

And hey, here in WV Alexander Campbell is considered a "historical figure" (one of the state fathers).

Also, add Patti Page--I grew up hearing stories of how her parents wouldn't miss Wednesday night services to see her television debut.

chrischar

I know some people on the Bush/Cheney transition team were members of the Church of Christ in Florida. And then there is Ken Starr whose father attended Freed-Hardeman University. Ken was a Bible teacher in Tennessee for a while.

Chris

marc

I knew several of these, but others are a surprise.  Weird Al?  So, I'm NOT the strangest member. . .

Just thought of an obvious one.  Lester Flatt.  Brothers preached (still do, maybe), was baptized late in life.
