From the "Who Are We?" page:

[!--QuoteBegin--][/span]

Quote

[!--QuoteEBegin--]How often is the Lord's supper eaten?

It is expected that every member of the church will assemble for worship on each Lord's day. A central part of the worship is the eating of the Lord's supper (Acts 20:7). Unless providentially hindered, each member considers this weekly appointment as binding. In many instances, as in the case of illness, the Lord's supper is carried to those who are hindered from attending the worship.

Whoa.  I've never actually encountered this in writing before.  Kind of a "be there or beware" rule, huh?

I've been a bit amazed lately at how different my Christian education has been from so many other Bible-believing Christians.  You would think that two groups wanting to order their lives according to the Bible would be about the same.  Externally we pretty much are.  We meet on Sunday, morning and evening, also at least once mid-week, we immerse new believers, we share in the Lord's Supper every week, etc, etc.  But the reasoning behind our actions is totally different!

The teaching that I grew up with was basically 1)God loves us 2)Because of His love for us, we love God 3)Because we love God we want to please Him 4)We study the Bible to find out how to please God.

The motivation for obedience is love.

In contrast, it seems that so many have been taught obedience out of fear.  Kind of - God gave us rules to follow.  We must study the Bible to learn the rules so we don't get in trouble.  It's very hard for me to understand that approach.

Janine, I didn't mean this as an attack on you or your church!  It's not aimed at anyone at all.  I'm not even saying that the rules approach as it appears to me is wrong.  It's just different from mine and somewhat hard to comprehend.

I grew up in a large Christian church in CA and went to an interdenominational Christian school from 3-12th grades with daily Bible classes.  I was never taught "Restoration movement" history.  We studied the Bible.  I do not recall even one sermon/lesson teaching why "denomination X" was wrong, though we did have lessons about cults.  I was never taught "5 acts of worship".  I never heard of disfellowshipping other congregations, or of leaders looking at other congregations to make sure they were doing things right.  I was never taught that it was sinful to miss church, it was just assumed that you'd want to be there.

I guess I just naively assumed that every church group who just called themselves Christians, had no denominational hierarchy or creed, and claimed to base their beliefs and practices solely on scripture was taught and believed just like me!

Is it any wonder that my first response to some of the problems people share on this board is, "Wow.  They really think that way?"  Sometimes I'm shocked.  Sometimes I'm saddened to tears.

Well, sorry to highjack your thread Janine.  I do think you have a nice website.   :D

Check it out:

There are features that need to be beefed up, it's very much a "work in progress".  Still, I'm grateful that it has been given over to the secretary's care, it's improved 1000%.  It always should have been her "baby".

Biggest event coming soon is Bible Bowl.  Rules with a map are included.

If you go to "Calendar of Events", down at the bottom are pictured some of the youth.  My baby Joseph has his back to the camera in the-- ah-- less serious photo.

janine

Hunh?!?  I didn't design it.  I think the secretary did.  I will tell Karen you complemented her work!

All I had to do with the design is that I incessantly whined about how horrible it was before, and now some changes I want to see are being implemented.

I think I'll get Karen to add the photo of our women's retreat group... The more photos of members on these sites, the better!  The church isn't the building!  I think Karen made it a point to write something about "our church home" in reference to our building.  That was good.

Janine, I had no idea you were from Houma!  I have been in that building @ Hollywood Rd many times.  I even preached their once back in the early 90's.  I was the minister at Luling, Gary was the minister their at Hollywood Rd.

My oldest daughter, Rachael, was born there in Houma at Cheber (? spelling) Medical Center.  What a small world.

You probably know Don Neyland at South Terrabone in Montegut.  He and I go way back.

This is great.  I feel like we are neighbors now -- just warmer in the bayou.  What I wouldn't do for some red beans and rice or Popeye's (they don't know what they are missing here in Milwaukee.

When I open you page . . . memories came rushing back.

Shalom,
Bobby Valentine

Chabert (shah-bear), a senator I think.  Some happy-lookin' dude with 70's hair, in the portrait in the lobby.  The only other famous Chabert I know of is Lacy Chabert, who played the cute dark edgy younger daughter on the recent-years movie version of Lost In Space.

That's the "charity" hospital, altogether the best one of the two in town, if you don't mind 43 residents and interns oiling up with Betadine to do a pelvic on you during your "first baby" 3-day labor... :help:

As for Luling, you probably remember Craig and Patricia Zeringue and their (now 7) kids?  Craig heads up the Houma office of a certain well-known international parcel delivery service now, they are members w/ us.  Eldest kid daughter married one of our elders' sons & they now have an almost-toddler. (Which basically means the Zeringues gained another daughter and son!  Ah, well, what's another kid or two, their hearts are big enough.)

Loooove Don and Sue Neyland and their kids.  They did yeoman's work on their bayou while we spearheaded the other side during the hurricane relief work last fall.

Unless the Lord has different plans, Mike & I will be moving down that other bayou to "grow" a congregation on that side, this summer.  I'm not sure if we will be another Don & Sue, but we'll try!
Janine, I remember well the hospital -- but you do what you have to do when you don't have health insurance.

Craig and Patricia I do indeed remember them.  Attendence always skyrocketed when they came  ;)   They are great people.  They attended Luling for a while before taking over FedEx there in Houma.  But I cannot believe they have another little one -- but if anyone can handle it that would be Patricia.  She is a rare diamond indeed.   Tell them I said "hi."  In fact I would like to hear from them, it has been a long time.

Michael and Cathrine (Don and Sue's kids) are great.  I remember the day that Michael was born (I told you we go way back) and now Don tells me he is taller than him.  Wow, kids grow up faster than we realize.

God Bless,

They will be glad to know how y'all are doing.  Maybe I can tempt Patricia to spend some time here if I remind her she can touch base with you that way...

My eldest three kids were born at Chabert.  I really did get good care there.  It wasn't the level of personalized attention I had with the last child, up North, with insurance... but it was good.

The special things about that last birth were fun trimmings anyway.  One doesn't need a romantic post-birth candlelit dinner of trout & all the trimmings; one doesn't need a super-California-king-sized bed so the whole family can stay with you at the birthing center.  (Can you tell St. Luke's was head-to-head competing with the other hospital in town for the Mommy vote?)

My kudos to the secretary also. Great job!

janine

I'm sorry  ...

I'l snail-mail you the rules if you like. :)

janine

If only you knew just how abysmally awful some other stuff is, that could have been included and thankfully was not...  (shudder)...

Oh, if you want an even more interesting mix of the sacred and the silly, try Bible Call (info on the web site).

Hey Janine, it looks good.  You did a great job of designing it.
