One of my blocks in joining my husband's church was my worry over whether or not a person could be saved if he wasn't sure he was saved. But (as I'm sure has been said many times) full understanding of God's grace isn't necessary for grace to work, Thank God.

Thank you, Sir,  for a thought-provoking article.

Bon Voyage

Nice to see you hear Bobby.  I hope you post more here.  Things are not as ridiculous here as that other board.

Bobby, and others,

Thanks for the article on assurance of salvation.  I was talking about this very thing with a very good friend of mine who will be teaching a class on assurance at ACU Lectureship in two weeks.  For those who will be attending Lecturship, Lester Duncan, Glenview CoC in Glen Rose, TX, will be teaching a class on Monday Morning, Feb. 18, in Rm 127 of the Bible Studies Building at 8:30 a.m. called "You will Never Get Out of This World Alive:  The Need for Assurance".  Lester told me he tried the material out on a congregation in San Antonio last Sunday and had one man come up, hug him tightly, and tell him he finally knew without a doubt that, after X years in the CoC, he was saved! He was finally assured of his salvation.  If you are going to be at Lectureship, you will find me in this class!   I can't think of a better place for members of this forum to meet than that class.  BTW, although Lester hasn't had time to get on the forum, he is a regular reader of GCMagazine.  I'm working on him to take some time and join us because I know we could all benefit from his participation.

Spurly,

I just noticed your response to this ancient post.  I had completly forgotten that I posted it way back in the last century.  But I was bored and decided to follow the numbers out to the end and see what was there -- and woa!  I saw me and a fairly recent response.  So thanks for reading and saying so  :bowsmiley:

Shalom,

I now live in Milwaukee. But when this post was written I lived in Grenada, MS.

Bob true indeed.  It is such a shame as well as an indictment on our preaching in Churches of Christ.  This saintly older sister had no concept at all of God's grace.  Now that she was older and could not physically go door knocking she felt useless and afraid because she had nothing to "offer to God."  He conception of salvation was completly human centered.  The gospel was obeying commands in her mind.  This, I think, is the practical effects of what Bill Love revealed in his study The Core Gospel.  It makes me really appreciate men like T.B. Larimore who found a way to be focused upon what really matters.

The Gospel & The I Think I Can Syndrome
Galatians 1.1-10

INTRODUCTION

We all grew up the story "The Little Engine that Could.

I really liked your story, Bobby, thank you.  I, too, struggle with the "I Thik I can" syndrome. But I am trying to change, and I think I am getting better at trusting God instead of me.

Just thought I would bump this to the front because what Bobby wrote was so good.

Hey guys,
Thanks for bringing this back to the top.  I had forgotten about it and missed it when spurly brought it back up.

Bobby, may I share with some friends of mine?
If so, how should I credit the piece?

Richard glad for you to use it.  As for credit my name is attached to the piece.  Perhaps you could include my location and email address in case someone wishes to contact me.

Bobby, well indeed, Galatians is revolutionary information, and your story points to the kind of turmoil in honest hearts who do not heed the true Gospel of grace. We are so fearful of "overconfidence" that we think "no confidence" is better, but what a put-down that is to the cross!!!
