There's just something about fresh, clean notebooks and sharpened pencils and the hope that there'll be a nip in the air by Thanksgiving...

Remember September Song from Knickerbocker Holiday? A classic, which contains these lines:

"And the days dwindle down to a precious few,
September, November...and these few precious days I'd spend with you..."

As I remember it was about Miles Standish trying to marry Priscilla.

You have touched where right where I am right now.  I have a son who turns 20 this week and he is living in NC and has finished a Nascar program and is working and getting ready to go back to school in the spring.  A son who starts classes at Lipscomb today.  He is playing soccer and is never available to talk on the phone.  A daughter who started High School yesterday.  She is very shy and was nervous about this big change. And also a daughter who started 4th grade yesterday.  Every year I walk home in tears but more so this year. I know that my children are in God's hands and that they are good people.  But I also miss the little people they used to be.  There were many times that my husband and myself were criticized for our methods of raising children.  We allowed freedom and choice and yes it looked messy at times but the end results are so far incredibly God-filled.  I pray that this school year for my children will be successful and fun.  My youngest has a teacher fresh out of college...young, enthusiastic, pretty, and so full of life.  So refreshing!  I pray that God guides her in her interaction with all the children in her class and that she doesn't lose that enthusiasm. Are they any teachers out there who regularly post here?  Let us know who you are and we will pray for you.  Teachers need prayer because they are touching lives all day everyday.  grace, Julie

Thanks a lot gang I just feel like bawling now.

Hearing the Mom's relate their stories about their children growing up and the sadness involved, reminds me of the time my daughter had the last "spend the night party".What used to be giggling and cutting up,was more geared to routine and was missing the ingredient of childishness.

My daughter was sad that growing up time had arrived for her and her friends.

When my granddaughter finished home school and was about to enter Lipscomb,I could see a little sadness and I told her that growing up was going to be the most fun of all.

God bless,Charles

Nah.  You eat them with popcorn, venison and silver-buckled slippers.

Believe it or not, these past couple of days I've had a couple of... twinges?  flashbacks?  wistful longings? ...for such a candlelit, nutmeg-scented Yuletide as I've rarely had.  And it's barely past Labor Day!  Who do I think I am, Wal-Mart?

To do such successfully, since this may be the last holiday season we're all here together, would be marvelous... it'll require major cleaning and re-arranging.  I'll need to get rid of a lot of perfectly good stuff I simply don't have room for.

I wonder if I have it in me?

Late August, early September used to be a time of change for me, and I still feel the urge.  even when I wasn't in school (and I spent too many years in school) this is the time of year I would change jobs or move.  These days I'm limited to planning September vacations and watching others change their lives.

Tonight at church we had a going-away party for a recent high school graduate who's leaving for the Air Force tomorrow.  He was nervous and tearful, as were his grandparents.  Big changes ahead for someone who has known little responsiblity.

Tomorrow my nephew starts kindergarten.  He's asked his mother, father, two grandmothers, aunt & younger  cousin to come with him, and they're going to.  This kid, though, has way too much confidence, and I wonder what they'll do with him.  I hope the school system builds him up instead of breaking him down.

Me, I just want to wander off somewhere.  but I'll do that next month.

Marc,
AAwwwww.... the feeling of falling temps and school starting and such.

Memory lane carries back to the time I hated to see "back to school signs".But thought positive about my beagles and getting a hunting permit.Kinda downhearted about losing the carefree days of summer.

Being much older,I quess trying to stay above ground and enjoying as much of life as I can becomes a priority,no matter what time of the year it is.

God bless,Charles

This school year starting has been a little harder on me than usual.  My youngest started kindergarten.  I cried like a baby after dropping him off that first day,  then it hit me that I wasn't just crying about him, but my oldest son also, who has started his senior year of high school.  So scarey to think that this time next year he will be off to college.  I just want this year to go slow, very slow.  It is tough to think of letting my children go.  But, I also have faith that this is God's way of helping me to let my oldest go next year.  God is getting me ready slowly, because right now I feel like I will go crazy with worry when the time comes for him to leave.  This is sort of my transition year.

Thank God for them.  I couldn't do it.

Well, I live way up in the area of the county where summer's end is fast-upon us, and glaciers will be back over Lake Erie, any month now.  Soo...Ark, buddy, I just turned 38, and though langour COULD come over me, I'm turning up the pace, in spite of smelling the grass on a football field, or the sound of children headed back to school. Tomorrow, I'm heading out and doing another 100 (century) mile bike-ride.

Life is good, and I will glorify my Creator w/ physical activity and a conviction that life is good.   And, please, nobody notice that the fire department is on its way to put out the candles on my birthday cake.   :0

Wishing you cushy seats...

My nephew returned from school yesterday and told his mother he had learned a new song.  He then sang:

"Land where my fathers died"

stopped, put his hand over his heart and continued:

"Land where the Pilgrims fried."

He then said that was all he could remember, but he WOULD like to know what a Pilgim was and whether you ate them with ketchup. ;)
