You can call us anything - except Kiwi.

By the way, people from the United States of America (this is getting clumsy!!) are known here as "septics".

English are "Poms".  We also have assorted dagoes, spics and wogs - all of which terms are politically incorrect when used by WASPs but perfectly acceptable when used by dagoes, spics, or wogs.  There was even a recent movie, made by a Greek-Australian (wog) comedian called "Wogboy".

Allan the not-a-kiwi

I thought it was the "United" States of America. ???
Ah ha!!

The Aussie has struck on the root problem of unity in the coc/restoration movement.  Isn't it true that:

1. The coc/restoration movement began in the US?
2. The coc/restoration movement originally focused on unity?
3. The US, though it is "united" has its petty squabbles and rivalries between the states?
4. In times of emergency or disaster those squabbles disappear as we unite to fight against an enemy of any kind (natural or man-made) attacking any of our "brother" states?(I'm thinking of 9/11, hurricanes, wild fires, the OK City bombing, etc)

Maybe we Christians can't bring ourselves to abandon our squabbles because we don't recognize that brother Christians are under attack.  If we could only see the attack for what it really is we wouldn't have to worry about unity.  We would stop worrying about our pet peeves and unite against our common enemy - Satan!

As to those from Mexico and Canada who don't like us using the term "American" to describe those of us from the USA because "they are Americans too"...  If they wanted to be Americans their forefathers shouldn't have shot back when we invaded their countries.

All the Yankee and Dodger discussion reminds me of the old World League of American Football (today's NFL Europe) when London was playing New York. The announcers gushed about how all Americans were rooting for New York against the team from the UK. My response was BULL! I'd root for Moscow before I'd root for a team from New York or LA.

Jets, Mets, Nets, Giants, Yankees, Knicks, Rangers, Islanders, Lakers, Clippers, Dodgers, and Kings are all on my permanent distaste for list. Thanks to moving vans the Rams, Raiders, and Chargers are off the list (though rumor has it the Chargers might be back on).

janine

"De Wah"!

There's this whole big subculture/community in Brazil descended from Confederate exiles.

Probably still holds cotillions and coming-out balls.

During my 6 1/2 years at LSU in Baton Rouge, I preached some meetings in places like New Iberia, La Place, New Orleans, Opelousas, etc. The culture is fascinating among all the Boudreaux, Gremillon, Richard (ree-shard), and other such families. Was always treated with great courtesy...but now understand the Cajuns have dis-invited President Chirac of France, who was supposed to make an appearance at Breaux Bridge for the great crawfish cookout. Can this be true? Perhaps our resident reporter on Bayou Teche (or is it another Bayou?), can fill us in on the latest developments.

Booty

Why?

I have received the following pm.

[!--QuoteBegin--][/span]

Quote

[!--QuoteEBegin--]I would appreciate it if you no longer referred to those in the US as "yanks."
WHY?  There is no malicious intent, it is a common name. I believe our Aussie will bear me out on this, "Yank" is what you are called. Also I doubt Allan is bothered any more by Aussie than I am by "Paddy" or simply "Mick" or "O". I am not even offended by "Tinker" with all it's negative conontations, I am a tinker and so be it.

The alternative "Gringo" appears to irritate USA citizens as well, why? So what do I call you?

Americans is not accurate and it is offensive to other Americans to use the term only for USA citizens, ask my wife.

I also was called down once for referring to the USA as only the US, I was informed that USA is accurate and to use US is offense to the other United States on your continent, the United States of Mexico.

Sorry, but if no slight is intended, I fail to see the offense.
Show me the offense and I will be glad to comply, but frankly I have encountered this all too often with USA citizens, an oversensitivity to terms that are accurate and a preference for terms which are not accurate.

Funny the pictures we all throw up on the screen. Remember when I thought fate, Trois, was a buxom blonde dowager?

Hmmm "Yank" as in pull you up short of the full shilling?

What else is funny is even though many here will correct you on "Americano" to refer to a "Estado Unidense"; if you ask them, they are "Latinos". In that term they include French Janine!!   Now if you want simply Carribean Latins, I believe that is "Criollo" which you would call "Creole"

Jerry, brother, could your sensitivity to the term "yank" be due to my disagreement with your government's course of action in Iraq?

crocless aussie

Never, thank you for giving me credit for saying something deep and meaningful.  I hope one day I can do it again to prove it was no fluke.

Is it possible that the unity against a common enemy is one of the things Paul was talking about in Rom 13 when he talked about Nero as "a servant of God to help you"?

Certainly the church flourished under persecution.  They needed God and knew it!

We don't recognise the enemy that our materialistic, humanistic society represents because we are not persecuted by it.  More like the frog in water slowly brought to the boil - we don't recognise the danger until it's too late.

Allan the Speaker of Wisdom :0

A "Kiwi Fruit" is really a Chinese Gooseberry.  Tsk tsk tsk.

Some capitalistic market exploiter named them "Kiwi Fruit".  Probably to get us Yanks to buy them.

When ya get down to it, I think I'd like to eat a variety of gooseberry sooner than something named after a furry little bird...

A few years ago I was in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic when a ship docked from Spain. The Spanish sailors were all over downtown, and Stanley Morgan, then the missionary working there, said the Dominicans were saying about the sailors, "Why don't they just speak Spanish?"

Hermano Brojees;
Perhaps the objector is a died in the wool confederate (as in CSA) who thinks of the word "Yank" and a carpetbagger in the same breath. This was a type of individual who invaded the South during the military reconstruction years to exploit the defeated Southerners.

As for me, a true son of the South, (with great-great-greats who were in the Confederate Army), it is fine with me and I see no offense at all. Besides, all that unpleasantness ended in 1865, or so I thought.

On the other hand, perhaps he or she is an Atlanta Braves fan! So I would call them whatever they desire and call me a Yank if you like. What would you like to be called?

I was waiting for that one.  Must be Uncle Ben's Converted Bran Rice.
[!--QuoteBegin--][/span]

Quote

[!--QuoteEBegin--]By the way,  residents of Mexico often refer to the United States simply as "el norte."
You can still find elderly people, without much English, here among the Cajuns, who call the invading English-speakers "Americans"... "les Americains", it sounds like.  Talk about "carpet-bagger syndrome"... I think the Louisiana Purchase was a lot longer ago than "De Wah B'twee-in De Stayuts", and they're still "Americans".  Sheesh.

They'd probably call the other half of my kin, the English/Irish/Scot/etc. mix out of the Appalachians, "Americans", meaning maybe "Notherners", and there'd be Pappy and Granny and Aunt Ruby the Queen of Spitting Tobacco, insulted at it.  Northerners indeed!  They all thought of themselves as deep, deep Southerners.

Anyway, what I think of when I hear "Yanks", as in when Booty uses it, is an old black and white movie with a bunch of English people rejoicing over "the Yanks" coming in to help win WWII.

Y'know, some stereotypical bunch in a bomb shelter during an air raid, ya gotta have at least one realistic Cockney guy in there, and a couple of sweet innocent upper-crust types (complete with ritzy accents... they could read a grocery list & it'd sound "high church"...), and perhaps a cherubic-looking Irish priest...

Those well-to-do types, anyway, never had an idea what real life was until the bombs started falling; the stress of the war comes to a head in the shelter, the high-browed guy shows what an utter pig he really is, and the high-class girl shows she really has some, and the obviously uneducated Cockney dude demonstrates all sorts of heroism, and the girl decides then and there to throw over her crummy boyfriend & marry the Cockney, so the priest does it, and they all come out after sunrise happy, except the nasty boyfriend, who runs off to try to be a hero 'cause he's gotta finally grow up, and ends up throwing his body on a bomb & saving some Yanks.

THAT'S what I think when Booty calls somebody "Yank".  Betcha didn't know you were distracting me so, eh, Booty?

Either that, or I think he means "yank", as in a short, sharp pull on something.  Heaven knows what.  ???

Nevertheless

It makes me think of Yankee Doodle.  I always kinda liked that song...

Actually, I just figure it's part of your interesting Irish way of speaking.  Like "bairn" for baby, "da" for dad, and "gob" for mouth.  It's part of what makes your posts fun to read.   :D

I'm sometimes rather dense when it comes to taking offense, but I've never considered "Yank" a pejorative term, even though my mom's side of the family (including a bazillion cousins) has been in Mississippi and "LEWS-ee-anna" for the last 150 years, at least.

:D

Never

crocless aussie

Patricia

I thought it was the "United" States of America. ???

Booty

Ach!!   Actually this has become quite interesting.  Word of explanation, most South Americans do not mind yanks calling themselves "Americans". It is when they become exclusive with it that it cheeks. By example, I still remember one "Gentleman" telling Sandi she should come to "America" and live with "Americans". I had to laugh when she said, "Can I bring my husband?". I was standing to give another lady my seat, the idea did not occur to the yank "Gentleman".

I also find some other terms to be intriguing. By example, WASP. I am not a White Anglo Saxon Protestant. I am a pink, celtic Christian.  WOG is one as well, Worthy Oriental Gentleman meant to avoid derogatory slurs and ended up becoming one.

But it is intent to a considerable degree. As I have a KIWI friend, I am quite aware that Allan is an Aussie, not a KIWI. Yet without Marty to explain it to me I might have innocently made that error. I also have two friends where one is South African and the other Zimbabwe....DO not confuse those two!! Also I found out do not use Yiddish with a Palestinian!!

In the end though I expect we will be nude without flags nor insignias.

marc

btw, I don't detest the Dodgers because they're from LA (hey, I've been a Rams fan since around 1975) but rather because I grew up a Reds fan in a Dodgers family in the seventies.

This contrarian nature goes back a way.  My Dodger-fan relatives are what they are because their friends and family were Yankee fans in the fifties. :help:

Booty,

Someone once told me the purest Spanish in the world is spoken in northern New Mexico (here in the USA).  They lost contact with the outside world in the 1600's and their language hasn't changed since then.   Sort of equivalent to us speaking Elizabethan English.
I don't know if that's true, but I know I can hardly understand it.

Old Guy,

Sandi's  home has it's own dialect called "Maracucho". Uses the vosotros similar in ways to the Argentines. My Spanish apparently has many Maracucho words, I honestly do not know.

I do know Mexican is very hard to understand not for the grammar and pronunciation, but for the vocabulary. We call it Spanglish.

Did you know there is an english speaking pocket in Brazil? Ran across it years back, forget the name at the moment but I understand it is refugees from your war.

You have the Supper after the sermon?  Isn't that unscriptural?  We were going to visit New Orleans at the end of the year, but now I'm not sure we should risk it.  We survived Pepperdine, Woodmont Hills, and even Oak Hills, but I'm not sure we're that far liberal!

Allan the Shocked

By the way we don't speak English, we speak Strine.

Booty

Allan,

Possibly we caused it. You see in ignorant bliss we not only have not been following the prescribed order, in wanton latin disregard for norms and regulations augmented by celtic rebellious nature, we have been varying the order continually.

Ach and we would be needing to take leave of our evangelism as well and research this matter. Perhaps all missionaries from all over the world should be recalled until this is settled?

winky

I've never heard of anyone being offended by the use of US rather than USA. That's more nitpicky than I've ever seen. I use US all the time.

As for Yanks, the only negative connotation I can imagine is what Nerdneh said, in the case of an inferred reference to the Civil War where the "northerners" were referred to as Yankees. Still, that seems beyond the bounds of normal senstivity to me. If anyone out there is offended by that, maybe they can explain it?

I am glad to know that South Americans don't appreciate the term Americans being used to mean US Americans only. I'm glad to know so I can be more careful, as that hadn't occurred to me.

Booty

Wendy,

The man whom objected to the term "U.S." was a project engineer from Mexico, I had noted in a report that "a skid was to have been inspected in the US prior to loading". I received a scathing response three pages that the name of Mexico is the United States of Mexico and I was a racist "Gringo" and being derogatory to latins. LOLOL!!! Actually it was quite comical as his company had been responsible for the inspection and I represented the client.

Of course it was seen as the strawman it certainly was. I did receive the nickanme of "Paddy O'Gringo" on the project after that. Down here I and other foreigners are frequently called Gringos, not really worth explaining the difference is. My neighbour, Ditmar Dummer is called "Gringo Flaco" and he is german. My brit mate, Graham is called "Gringo" as well. although he always responds, "No No Nosotros hablamos ingles!!"  (No No, we speak english).

Jerry, your pm was private as to the origin and could have stayed that way had you chose. I am truly sorry that you find "Yank" offensive. It is not my intent. I will refer to you as simply "Brother" if that does not offend you, but as for the rest it would appear that the majority are not offended by "yank", so "yank" it is.

Bill

I'm with Arkstfan.  Us sheep herders aren't to choosey about what name we're called unless you are yelling at us.  I haven't ever thought of "yank" as being a negative word.  Guess I've lead too sheltered of a life.

Norteamericano at times, more popular and more accurate is Estado Unidense. But most use Gringo for all foreigners.

Naw.  If they all simply take on as a secondary mission, like a correspondence course, the "taming" of Crocless' & Booty's churches, it should be sufficient.

Bayou Teche is lovely, as the great house Shadows on the Teche in New Iberia can attest.  But, I'm on Bayou Terrbonne.

Anyway - Gov. "Mike" Foster and others have formed a movement to recall the invitation.  (Chirac had been invited 'cause it's the anniversary of the Louisiana Purchase.)

Foster is a sensible guy (he's a fairly conservative businessman, a hunter and a welder, so I like him a lot   ).  He's not doing the recall thing 'cause he thinks it has great international import.  Like, how important is it, really, as far as changing the policies of governments?  Not much.

It's more of a statement.  More of a "We don't need you here... You were our brother, and you actively worked against us.  If you'd merely disagreed, we'd not have thought that abnormal.  You're French, after all!  But you worked to undermine us.   You made the UN even more useless than it usually is.  We don't need you here, thanks."

WWL AM radio out of New Orleans is soliciting travel industry advertising slogans, so we won't miss the French tourism, 'cause we'll get more from the non-French parts of Canada, we'll get even more British travelers than usual, and definitely more US tourists (except Patriciaredstone  ;)  ).

"New Orleans - The Cuisine of Paris, Without the Odor"
"Enjoy Louisiana - It's France Without the French"

I thought PM's were private, hence "private message."  Anyway, the term 'yank' or 'yankee' is offensive to me.  It can often be used as a deratory name for northerners.

I still would appreciate it if you discontinued your use of the term.

I am from the north and I don't care for that term.  I am not a "yankee."

Shakespeare: "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet."

Americanism: "No  matter how you slice it, it's still baloney."

This all started me thinking of my "pet peeves." I suppose we all have them. Some of mine:

People who run red lights after they have been red at least 3 seconds.

Tailgaters

Someone at the next table in a nice cafe blabbing at the top of their voice on a cell phone.

People navigating at top speed through a mall parking lot all the while gabbing on a cell phone.

The other day I saw two women in a van, each was talking on a cell phone. Wonder if they were talking to each other??? :talkingonephone:
