Booty,

In Mexico, the polite term for a "yank" is norteamericano.

Do people use that in Venezuela?  I wouldn't if I were you.   Either "yank" or "gringo" is a lot easier to say or type!

Richard

About 20 years ago I had a job where I worked with some guys from Nicaragua.  They used to call me "Coyote".

It was not a term of endearment.  :sarcasim:

Allan -

A recent idea, the Lord's Supper after the Sermon (notice both are capitalized).  See, when you hear the Sermon and are compelled to Repent at the Invitation and/or Song of Encouragement, then you do so, and are squeaky clean and right with God, so that you may then Partake of the Emblems in a Worthy Manner, Pleasing and Acceptable in His Sight.

Like, are we not supposed to maintain at all times a prayerful and tender-hearted attitude so as to dwell in the benefits of I John?

Walk in the Light!
Beautiful Light!
Come where the dew drops
Of mercy shine bright!
Shine all around us,
By day and by night -
Jesus, the Light of the world!

Aren't we supposed to examine ourselves, all of us, and not wait until we're manipulated by a sermon or called on the carpet by an Invitation?

I'm not against the change, not at all, I don't mean to fuss.  (Hah!  I'm so desperately thirsty for any change, I welcomed it!)  I just think some folks' reasoning is a little odd.  I know they think mine is way off...

One benefit: the people who would leave after the Lord's Supper have to sit through the sermon now (hee hee hee).

LOLOL!!! Basura Criolla  Creole Trash!  Actually there is a certain attitude of superiority in Spain to Latin America in general, not too terribly important to the irrepressible Venezolanos, but devastating to the Argentines.

janine

I hear it in my head with the same almost-Bronx accent one finds in New Orleans.

"Whatcha doin' nah?  Goin' see yaMomanem?  How dey doin'?  Ya bin downinna Parish dis week?"

Regardless of the ethnicity, Creole/AfAm/Irish/German/French/Spanish/whatever, folks from there who've "stewed" together in the "melting pot" long enough are colled (and call themselves) "Yats".  Short "a", like in "happy".

"Wheh yat, Tee-Boy?"  (How are you, Little Boy?)

How do people ever find their ancestry and bloodlines and cultural heritage(s) so singylar, so "pure", as to be able to claim only one?!?

Booty,

Yank doesn't bother me a bit, although yankee would.
I am sometimes referred to as a gringo, and that doesn't trouble me much either.   I know that Christians in Mexico sometimes call us Los hermanos gringos, and they don't mean anything malicious by it.

Very few citizens of the USA are aware that Mexico is officially
Los Estados Unidos Mexicanos.

Booty

Don't you be asking now, just leave it be. No! You bog culchie eejit, dunna ask!

No  No

Allan, "Septic"?  I know that one will spoil the puddin!

I could not help it, curiosity is an Irish past time!!

patriciaredstone

It's ok if you call me a yank, Booty.  When I lived in Italy we were sometimes called "yankee" and that really bothered my mama who was born and raised in the deep south. She'd do her best through her Italian-in-a-southern U.S.A. ("bone-JEEEER-no!" "ko-MAY-sta!") dialect to educate them about the proud history of the confederate south and the oppression of the yankee invaders.

janine

Unless perhaps we tattoo them across our... persons.

I'm 100% AfAmer. That means mostly African, with some Cherokee, probably some white, probably a little of several other races and ethnicities. But my skin says I'm black and I'm cool with it.

By the way,  residents of Mexico often refer to the United States simply as "el norte."

We tend to use the term macadamia now as our "friends" in the southern states (our Mexicans) refer to us as "Queensland nuts".  Can you believe the cheek of them?

No too often, thank God, but sometimes, I find people who wouldn't be able to live through a change in their familiar worship service, tolerant of all sorts of weirdnesses and innovations and differences in foreign worship services.  You know, when they hear about then 3rd or 4th hand.

They do still think, somehow, that we oughts go over there and teach 'em our CENI, and 5-step + 5-step, and song-song-prayer-song-sermon-song-Supper-Collection-song-Announcements-prayer format.   But are happy to wait patiently until the great future date when the poor backward third-worlders come up to "our" speed. :0

Let a congregation in the same town try some of that freaky stuff, & watch out!

You know, freaky stuff like services longer than an hour, or independent women's ministries including "social" stuff for disadvantaged women.... You know, freaky stuff.

Son of a Preacher Man

I'm not George Stienbrenner... or Derek Jeter... or Mickey Mantle... or Babe Ruth.

Hate the Yankees!  Loyal Yankee hater!  "I say unto you, love your enemies but hate the Yankees!"

"Yank's" or "Yankees" always reminds me of that[/i] baseball team.  I'd rather not be called something that so closely resembles that which I despise.

:D

On the lighter side and all in fun,

Booty

I generally agree with Jerry on a lot of things and I respect that he finds offense with the term - Yank, but, I've just not had the experience where that is a perjorative word and would consequently be hurt by its use.

Heck, I even like the word.  Yank doesn't bother me a bit.  I kind of find it having a sentimental feeling.  (Thinking of some WWII films - I can hear the Brits referring to us Yanks.)

So, no offense here.  Even though I would respectfully disagree with your view on what's happening in Iraq.

Steve

Jim Abb

I have no problem with Yank. I agree with the warm fuzzies from old WWII movies and the Brits calling us that.
I also have no problem with Steinbrenner's team....the way the Tigers have played the last several years you might as well have a winner to root for!
And I don't think other residents of the American continents should be offended when we call ourselves American. The root word "America" is part of our name, The United States of America. Does any other country have the word "America" as an official part of their name? I don't know, I'm just asking.

Bill

Right on, seekr.  No offense to those in North America or South America but I consider myself an American because the name of my country is the United States of American.  Just as the people of Mexico are Mexicans, we are Americans.  My home continent is North America just as Sandi's home continent is South America and Booty's is Europe.  If I were from Venezuela, I would consider myself to be a Venezuelan.

I've wondered about this before but it doesn't seem right to call myself a United Statian or a U.S.Aian.

When I lived in Kenya, people considered me a European until I opened my mouth and then they knew I was an American.  I looked like my ancestory was from Europe but the way I talked said I was an American.  All of the people in Kenya had an accent except for me (IMO) but they said I was the one with an accent (they were right).

Asians in Kenya were really from India.  There weren't any real Kenyans because they were either of European, Asian or a particular tribe.  There was very little racism but there was quite a bit of tribalism.  I thought at the time wouldn't be great if the people of Kenya were Kenyans first and then their tribe.  Some of this is a little too much like Christianity.  We need to be Christians first and our denominations or non-denominations second.

Don't get me wrong on Kenya.  I love the people and I love the country.  If I were to live anywhere other than the USA, I would want it to be Kenya.

I'm a follower of Christ who lives in the USA.

Hey more people go to high school football games in Arkansas than go to NFL games in LA

We're still trying to recover from the shock of no longer having a St. Louis Cardinals affilate here. We were with Cards for 20+ years and now we are with the Anaheim 's. But for $3 I can sit in the worst seat in the house and be closer than 95% of the folks in a major league stadium.

Actually though I don't dislike the Clippers, no fun kicking someone that is that down. I semi-mad at the NBA for letting the Grizzlies move to Memphis. Major leagues only 2 hours away is tempting. But hey we've got 10 big league teams within a six hour drive (3 St. Louis, 1 Memphis, 2 Nashville, 4 Dallas), just a normal commute in LA isn't it?

The Rams are picking up some support in Little Rock but this is still a Dallas Cowboys town. In baseball this Cardinal country, the first spring training camp ever was the Cardinals in Hot Springs, Arkansas. The NBA and NHL barely exist as far as the folks here are concerned.

The French spoken here (well, once you remove all the Indian words) is a lot like France-French of 200 years ago.

For a long time, even among ourselves, in our efforts to build contact and tourism with France and other French places, the French spoken here was considered "not the best", you see. Bad grammatically, maybe.  Or perhaps the accent was a problem.

Anyway, it's not that way any more.  We just revel in it the way it is.  The French teachers that were imported to teach me in the special classes I had as a child (y'all knew I was "special", dintcha?) were from Belgium and Trinidad and everywhere imaginable but France.  The focus was to just increase overall Frenchness around here, not to try to get all the little Cajuns "corrected".

Ah, well, Daddy married an Appalachian girl, and no French happened in my home, just at Mamman et Pappa's house in the Brule.  So, I understand a lot of it but can never think of anything interesting to say.  (Le crayon et sur la table.  Je ne c'est pas... Ou est le chat?  Quel heuer et il?  Qui est?  Stuff like that.  And cuss words.)

I'm a "Murkin" an' proud of it.  Me callin' myself that does not stop a Canadian or Mexican or Central or South American from also using the label, does it?

Trois

Lee,

Is "monynym" the same as "Mom'anem" that we use in AfAm. dialect? You know "We gon' go see Mom'anem, as soon as Bob'enem get here."

translation "We're going to visit Mother and the rest of the family when Robert and his wife arrive." :)
