Double post (all kinds of computer problems today)

Marc,

Even if Rolen is out, I still think the Cards clinch the NL penant.  They've got a lot of talent.

Kevin

Absolutely none of the teams remaining can possibly win.  I mean, the Twins or Angels?  C'mon.  That's about as likely as, say, the Patriots beating the Rams in last year's Super Bowl.  Can't possibly happen.

marc

At least the Angels are winning due in large part to the managerial style of ex-Dodger Scioscia (my fondest memory of whom involves his being steamrolled at home plate by Tom Browning).

marc

Nice start.  Tied up 1-1 after two tight games.  Gotta work every night this week, so I'll miss the games in SFO (except during break and lunch).

Hey, Tim Salmon was on my fantasy team this year.  Any chance I can get some points from this, even though my season's long ended?

marc

Not having a horse in the race, I thought this was the most enjoyable WS I've watched in years.  There were a ton of compelling images.  Watching the kids in the Giants' dugout.  Every Bonds at bat gave the sense of history in the making (somehow my mind kept going back to my early days as a baseball fan watching Aaron chase Ruth's record--Bonds is that kind of historic figure).  Francisco Rodriquez coming on the scene after less than a month of Major League experience with amazing stuff, seeming to be figured out in games 4 & 6, then coming back in the end.  The emotions crossing Spezio's face the last two games.  That comeback in game 6, after most of us thought it was all over.

Of course next year, when the Reds, featuring a finally-healthy Griffey are back in the series. . . .  ;)

However I will say the bit with the fan hitting Reggie Sanders with the Thundersticks in game 7 while he was trying to pick up a ball was way, way over the line.  And I'm not just saying that because he's an ex-Red.[/quote]
I was hoping they ejected the fan, but they never said if they did or not.

Hey, on a lighter note, who is your pick to win the world series?  Personally I am leaning to a match up betweek Oakland and St. Louis.  I think that would be a great series, but the A's pitching will be too much for the Cardinals.

How about you?  What's your pick?

Kevin

marc

Well, actually the original Washington Senators became the Minnesota Twins, who do still exist, no thanks to Bud, and who are still in the mix.  The team that became the Rangers was a later, expansion version of the Senators.  As to the MVP thing, we'll wait and see on that.  From what I'm hearing from sportscasters and writers, it's far from a done deal. ;)

I'm not sure who to pick.  For a while I've thought the Johnson/Schilling combo would help Arizona repeat, but with Gonzales out, I'm not sure.  St. Louis has a ton of talent, but played below their ability for most of the year, only coming on the last couple of months.  I'm not convinced they have what it takes to go all the way.  Then again, late additions such as Rolen, Finley and even Fassero could put them over the top. The Yankees are experienced and can never be discounted.  The A's have a great1-2-3 pitching combo and a credible lineup.  Even the Angels, who have played over their heads all year, could surprise.  Even though I'm a lifetime NL fan, I have to say I think the trophy will go to whoever wins the AL this year.

marc

Seems Rolen will be back for the series, if the Cards make it.

They have plenty of talent, but earlier in the year they wasted too much of it.  Rolen's the spark that can take them all the way.  They  should still have enough to beat the Giants or Braves, but whether they do is another question.

spurly

Twins and Angels.  Cards and ?.  Wouldn't it be something if the team they were trying to kick of the league won the series?  What irony.

Kevin

Fate

Hooray!!!! :D  :)

Looks like we may get an all California World Series!!!! :D  :D

Even if it is the hated Giants and the usually notworthyofattention Angels (and not my beloved Dodgers)...still...Hooray!!! :D  :D

Go Cali!!!!!

And for all you who want it otherwise.... :p  :0  :p

Fate

Still a Dodger fan... still hard to pull for either team... but it's good to see two ex-Dodgers managing both teams in the world series... :D

That comeback in game 6, after most of us thought it was all over.

That was not enjoyable :(

marc

Hmmm. . . I have the feeling Owen wouldn't appreciate it if I said that  forgot to mention thundersticks and rally monkeys.

However I will say the bit with the fan hitting Reggie Sanders with the Thundersticks in game 7 while he was trying to pick up a ball was way, way over the line.  And I'm not just saying that because he's an ex-Red.

Fate

Owen,

Stolen water? You wound me! I thought it was given with the purest of hearts! Not grudgingly or of necessity for God loves a cheerful giver! :0  :D  :D

Besides, you guys would have never made it without an ex-Dodger at the helm anyway. Oooooohhhh! I know it hurts...but the truth is like that sometimes! ;)

We have a local nut (our last governor's press secretary) who is the self-appointed cheerleader for our minor league team.  One of the things he does is bring a bag full of old toast to games, and when an opposing player is thrown out on a good defensive play, he yells "you're toast" and throws the toast into the stands.  I've been hit in the head before when I wasn't paying attention.

Well, it's time to start throwing the toast in Arizona's direction.

Randy Johnson gets beat up.  Curt Schilling starts and the Diamondbacks still lose.  St. Louis is up 2-0.  There will be no repeat world champion this year.

marc

That would be my guess, but I really like the way Scioscia's got the Angels playing.  Could be interesting.

marc

Giants up 2-0 after two games in St. Louis.  Not a good sign for the Cards.  The Giants are finally getting the help from the supporting cast (Aurelia, Santiago) they've been missing most of the year.  Even though there's been a bit of bad blood between the the Cards & my Reds recently, I'd like to see the World Series come back to St. Louis, which is a great baseball town, but things don't look good.

Oh well.  Wait till next year.  The new stadium should give the Reds a boost, just like the Bengals stadium did. . . . oh, never mind.

marc

I think even Reds fans admired Scioscia's all-out style.  And the Angels are one step closer.  Maybe this year at least one curse will be broken.

spurly

Well,

I've been out of pocket since Thursday, without TV or radio, and I came home last night to find out the Angels trounced the Twins and the Cards are losing 3-1.

Looks like it will be a Pacific Coast Highway series.  But it ought to be good.

Kevin--it was easy to miss, but they did briefly mention that the fan had been escorted out of the stadium.

The Senators became the Texas Rangers.  Unfortunaley, Texas doesn't have a chance this year - though they do have the most valuable player in the American League.  We will just have to see if he wins the vote.

Kevin

marc

Yeah, three posts in a row.

Rolen's shoulder doesn't look good.  If he's out, that's a major hole in the Card's lineup.  Giants or Braves, anyone?

spurly

Hmmm,

Last year's world series contestants (Yankees and Diamondbacks) are the first ones to go home.  Looks like this year's series will be a good one too.

Go Cards and A's.

Kevin

spurly

I really like the heading on the front page of the OKC paper this morning.  It read - Twins 1, Contraction 0.   Boy, if the Twins win again, how are they ever going to kick them and their homer hankies out of the league.  This has to be Bud Selig's worst nightmare.

Marc, I read today that the Cards put Rolen on the roster for the NLCS.  He may be back after all.

Kevin

Fate

Oh no! Cold shot. :D

My fondest memory of Sciosia was his ability to do a whole lot with only a little talent but a big heart... ;)

spurly

Personally, I think they pegged the wrong man for MVP.  In my book it should have been the rookie reliever, Rodriguez.  But since when has a reliever ever won a world series MVP?

Kevin

Fate

What do, you mean Owen? ;)  I thought it was great!!!! :D  Anytime the hated Dwarves  ... er... I mean... "Giants"   lose... it's a good day!

(Hey, when you're a Dodger fan   sittin' at home( like the team is  )all you have left is "hateration") :p

We'll if the Lord doesn't return and we don't enter into WW3, it'll be  Dodgers and  Angels   next year. Dodger's take em' in six!!!

Nope, sorry don't care for monkeys, rally or otherwise or thunderbats for that matter.  I will say that Anahiem's fans seemed more into the game.  Guess we're too "sophisticated" to scream and shout.

Fate,
Your Codgers aren't going anywhere soon.  Ha!  I'll keep my other comments about southern Californians who steal our water to myself. :p
