Bon Voyage

Spurly, send 'em up here for a winter and they will never miss church on sunday again.

Car started.  just barely.

julie danley

Church was cancelled this morning.  I think that this is the first time since we moved here 16 years ago.  I am not sure how many inches we have on the ground...I think at least 16 and it is supposed to keep snowing through tomorrow.  My husband is on his way back from Winterfest with lots of teens but I think they are going to have to stop for the night...too treacherous.  My nine year old daughter is getting pretty bored with me.  grace, Julie

Alphageek:  Be careful about the offers you make here, someone may want to take you up on them :D   I've been wanting to visit Northern Idaho ever since I discovered Patrick McManus' humorous accounts of hunting, fishing and growing up in the area.  A few years ago my area of responsibility at work included the Pacific Northwest and the Northern Rockies, so I would on occasion be spending time on the phone with young people in Spokane, Missoula, Kalispell and that part of the world.  One of these days I'm going to get there!

marc

I just don't wanna talk about it anymore.  C'mon, flood or snow or ice, make up your mind!  And will someone please get the mess at Dulles straightened out before I lose my mind!

janine

Hearing your stresses reminds me of the few bad things about living up North.  Horrible that you, practically in the South, should suffer the mess.

God grant you patience.

janine

Yeah, it must be demonic power, the way the weathermen are always right!

We've had almost all of tonite's Mardi Gras parades put off until Monday or some other back-up "rain date".  No big storm right now, but tornado warnings all night.  Flash flood warnings this morning north of Lake Ponchartrain, and window-rattling thunder this morning here.

janine

Is it much of a transition from skates like that, to skis?  Snowshoes?  Not that you'll need them.. just wondering.

marc

Okay, I may stop complaining about all the snow.  We've had constant rain the last two weeks and today, the first day of my day-shift schedule at work, I'm flooded in and can't get a mile away from my house.

And on top of that, we're expecting an inch of ice and snow during the day today, and another inch or so of snow tonight.

This is one miserable winter.

spurly

We had a dusting of snow last night.  We will see how many people see a few white specks on the ground and decide the roads are not safe.   :(

Kevin

marc

The rain has stopped.  Not it's sleet.  There's about a half-inch of ice covering everything.

marc

They have fire trucks parked across the main road here, keeping people from getting through.  We have about an inch of ice on the roads.  It's kind of eerie watching cars go past my window (on an off-road), their tires making no sound on the ice.

marc

This miserable day's almost done.  First flooded in, then iced in.  Now the electricity's going off and back on every few minutes because of the weight of the ice on the lines.  Tomorrow has to be better. I guess it could be worse.  I could be stranded away from home, like Julie's husband.  I'll pray he can get through tomorrow.

Jeff

Our prayers for all of you who have had to endure tough weather this weekend.  The computer models got this one right... it has been a wicked system.

So that you can rejoice with those who rejoice:  my fourth grade daughter has a science/weather project due this week, so we made a thermometer from a clear plastic Coke bottle, water/food coloring, a clear straw, clay and a ruler (intrigued now, aren't you?)  God provided for the display of how well our thermometer worked with this same weather system that is giving many of you fits.  It was 70 degrees Saturday afternoon when we finished, so we set the instrument on the porch and took a picture.  Sunday after church it was 40 and, sure enough, the water level had contracted down from the 2" mark on the ruler to below the 1" mark (fortunately 4th graders aren't being taught calibration of weather instruments just yet!)

Here in the Detroit area it has been the coldest winter I can remember. Hardly any days below zero, but few above 30 either. Usually the temps are more varied. Almost always several days near 50 each month, and a few below zero, but this winter the temp guage has mostly been between 10 and 20. No big snowstorms, just several 2" snowfalls, this morning included.
Jerrybrooke.....we rented Jeff Daniel's "Escanaba in da Moonlight" this weekend. Very funny at times. And definitley not a chick flick. My wife, who's only been to the "Superior State" once I think, didn't believe the accents. (Her family were transplanted Tennesseans.) I had to tell her that "Ya, dey do talk like such." I'm pretty sure my uncle and cousin still have a deer camp somewhere southwest of Houghton. Actually saw it marked on a snowmobile map one time, but I've never been there myself.

Bitter, bitter, bitter. This is me being, you guessed it, bitter. It is in the 60s here and will be in the 70s tomorrow. This is not winter weather. Some would argue that living in TX all my life I have never seen winter weather. I want snow. Now. And I'll also be wanting it in July when it is 115 degrees.

janine

Your bear looks crankier (10 a.m. Tuesday).

I keep hearing dire predictions re: W. Va. weather on the national news.

janine

Oh, God bless you, you only had to worry about mudslides... God keep you, Maurine.

I've been wondering what y'all up North could possibly do to bring on a little global warming.

I've been tempted to plant my spring flower beds & veggies... but I'll wait until after this horrible weather system dies first.  We're in the 50's & 60's in Southeast Louisiana today, result of the terrible cold northeast.

marc

Just saw this on the crawl of weather-related announcements at the bottom of the tv screen:

Open Door Community Center
       Closed.

Emily

We are also under a flood watch for the weekend. Here in the DC area, we got about 2 feet of snow (where I live anyway).  They finally got our driveway plowed yesterday and we were able to get the car out for the first time since last Saturday (6 days!).  I live in a very hilly and wooded subdivision and we do not get a lot of melting until the sun reallllllly shines!

Bon Voyage

Only supposed to be scattered snowshowers.  But we got about 6 inches in the last two hours.  Weatherman are of the devil.

Bon Voyage

Supposed to be 18 inches on the ground by tomorrow.  Still snowing.  Have about a foot in the last 8 hours.

seekr

I get sunshine today!!! Not that I am a braggard or anything like that. The high will be around 51. I am going roller skating to celebrate.

seekr

Bon Voyage

Its about -20 F and I don't know if I can get the car to start.

will know soon.

Nevertheless

We got a combo of ice, snow, and sleet last night but it didn't look too bad.  We left for church and when we got up to the blacktop we discovered a solid sheet of ice, so we turned around and came home.

Spring, where are you??

Alphageek

You're all invited to come to north Idaho if you'd like.  I think we stole someone else's winter weather - its been in the 40's and 50's most of the time, with some rain, some sun... but almost no snow.  Usually at this time of the year we're in the 20's and 30's (or lower) and have a foot or two of snow on the ground.  I still can't believe that I've only had to shovel once... and I think I'm done for the year.  This winter reminds of some of the winters that I spent waaaay south of here.

seekr

I live in Woodland WA, about 25 minutes north of Portland, OR. It has been a really mild winter, but the rains are here, now and we had a bit of flooding a couple of weeks ago. I live between the Columbia river and the Lewis river and the Lewis flooded some of the houses here. I live on a hill and only had to worry about the landslides that could happen. My hill, a few years ago, had a landslide so I am keeping my eyes open. Not really fearful though, but mostly the weather this winter was great.

Marc:  Dulles is up and operational as of this morning.  I've been working flights in and out of DCA all morning with no problem.  BWI is still really hurting, so don't try to go there until tomorrow.  New York area airports are starting to dig out as well.  Lots and lots of folks trying to get on flights and get into/out of those cities that were shut down, so pray for patience when you go! (maybe even before  :D )

As a United employee, Dulles was my main stressor.  Yesterday was so busy we blew out one of our servers and had to move into the training room to work.  Today, even, we were still overloaded rebooking people who decide not to do anything until they were sure they could get out.

Janine, if you've seen the pictures of the snow, that's north of us.  If you've seen the flooding and ice, that's us.  My county (Lincoln) has been declared a disaster area (I'm not sure how that's different from the norm).  A woman was killed trying to cross the water here Sunday, and another man is missing.  Electric was off Sunday night, but back on by Monday afternoon.  Many people aren't expecting electricity to be restored until Friday.  Yesterday, I had to take several detours around the water to get to work, making my forty-minute drive over an hour, and even then dodged remains of downed trees and drove over a power line that was only a foot or so above my car.  Yesterday evening, I found myself crossing a snow-and-ice covered hill on a road I haven't travelled regularly for some time on my way home.   Then this morning the road appeared clear, until I drove (slowly, not touching the brake) into a curve a mile and ahalf from my car, and pretty much lost control of my car on the black ice.  I resisted the temptation to touch my brakes, eventually regained control, and fought the ice all the way into work.

I'm a bit stressed (more from the drive than the actual work).  Two days off now, though.

janine

Glad to hear from you Em.  Stay dry.

Emily

This is kind of gruesome...but you know how you always read about those people in places like Oregon and Montana who are snowed in for weeks at a time?  They sometimes lose it and you read about some mass murder in the household...hey, I said it was gruesome...anyway...my cat and dog are looking at me really funny right now...
