Nevertheless

My musical tastes can only be described as eclectic.  I like

Glen Miller
Genesis
America
Moody Blues
John Denver
Fleetwood Mac
George Winston
Boston
Kenny G
Eagles
BeeGees
Carpenters
Hall & Oates
Santana
Temptations
Nat King Cole
Simon & Garfunkel (but not Paul Simon solo)
Billy Joel
Chicago
Crosby, Stills, & Nash
Peter, Paul & Mary
Glen Campbell

In fact, I like almost anything but country, opera, and metal.  Oh, and I can't stand anything that screams, no matter the genre!

:music:

Bobby Valentine

I have to admit that my favorite "secular" music is classic rock.  Since others have listed some artists I will share as well.

The Beatles are my all time favorite hands down
The Byrds
Boston
Van Halen
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Pink Floyd
Bruce Spingsteen
ZZ Top
Led Zepplin (yes, I confess it)
Eric Clapton
CCR

Today I really like

Creed
Collective Soul

Jars of Clay
Third Day

My weakness
Bobby Valentine

Barry

Hi All,
I'd like to ask a question that is sort of related to this topic:

Why do people in acappella churches refuse to allow instruments in the church but have no problem listening to Christian music on CD/Tape that does have instrumental accompaniment? This has always seemed very inconsistent to me.

IHS,
Barry

After I set aside the Eiffel-tower-high stack of Christian CD's... my secular listening features everything from Glenn Miller to Tchaikofsky (who can spell that?) to Bobby McFerrin to Wayne Toups & Zydecajun...   Old hill-country bluegrass & pre-bluegrass... showtunes  (I often play "C'est Moi" from Camelot to poke fun at my Mike, who is Lancelot in many ways... he's just about perfect.)

The only thing I can figure about instruments on tape being OK if it's not a worship service, and being OK in the car worshipping and loving God, but not in the worship service... It's gotta be some sort of self-delusional mental split to make desires and conveniences "OK".

I recall singing "Faithful and True" (Wagner, yes?  That "here comes the bride" march-in?) in 4-part hrmony for a church wedding.  No recordings, neither instrumental nor vocal.  All voice.

I think I'll find some Eagles for the CD player right now; gotta get everyone up for worship services, it's 7:30 a.m. already.  God bless y'all today.

I like the Eagles, U2, The Rolling Stones, Van Hailen, Bon Jovi, David Matthews, Three Doors Down, and Train to name a few.

Bon Voyage

I like listening to 70's and 80's country.
Southern Rock.
R&B.
sometimes a little bit of everything.

I don't like Avril Lavigne's music and if you have young daughters who listen to her, I am sorry you have to listen to this.  Not really fond of much current pop music either.

Today's country for the most part isn't country anymore.  Seems a lot of it is adult contemporary now.  Brad Paisley seems to be the new country guy to listen to.

I kinda like the Strokes.

Bluegrass is fun to listen to every once in awhile.  O Brother definitely put a lot of this back to the forefront.

Son of a Preacher Man

Put me in that eclectic category too:
This list is an attempt to recall them chronologically (and given that I'm 48, that's a lot of chronology, lol), and that have survived the test of time:
Beach Boys
Beatles
Rolling Stones
Temptations
The Lovin Spoonful
The Doors
John Prine
Simon and Garfunkel (and Paul by himself)
James Taylor
Carole King
Santana
Jimmy Buffett
Fleetwood Mac
Eric Clapton
Leon Russell
Joe Cocker
Dire Straits
Lyle Lovett
Doc Watson (discovered late)
As we get into the 80's and 90's the list is much shorter....guess I went through a picky stage!
Manhattan Transfer
Mozart (after seeing the film "Amadeus")
Bruce Hornsby
Huey Lewis
and then a big gap to present day, in which I think there is a lot of fresh talent
Sheryl Crow
Matchbox 20
Fastball
Counting Crows
Dave Matthews
and whoever wrote the score to "Les Miserables"
I'm sure I left some out.....but you asked!

marc

I was a huge ELO fan in the seventies, and still think the band is underrated by people who tend to take them too seriously.  Otherwise:

Springsteen
James Taylor
John Hiatt
Cold Chisel (I know no one's ever heard of them)
Split Enz (the better band that was before Crowded House)
Paul Simon (and Garfunkel as well)
Beatles
Johnny Cash
Tom Petty
Sinatra
Al Stewart (beyond Year of the Cat and Time Passages, some really weird stuff)
Sting (particularly 1st two solo albums)
and many, many more.

I've also been listening to a bit of big band-era blues lately.

dgdodd

My music choices are extremely diverse.  I am currently listening to Van Morrison but have George Gershwin waiting in the wings.

OldDad

I'm all over the map...I'll listen to anything but rap, and "Today's Hit Country!"

Bill Monroe
Third Thyme Out
The Seldom Scene
Hot Rize

Ladysmith Black Mambazo
The Bobs

They Might be Giants
Doug and the Slugs
Squeeze (featuring Paul Carrack)

The Police
The Cars
The Monkees ("They were a major influence on the Beatles..."   "I know!"  from what movie???)

Tim Wilson

Son House
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Five Blind Boys of Alabama
The Dixie Hummingbirds

Perry Como
Nat King Cole
Dean Martin
Sinatra

George Jones
Don Williams
Larry Norman
Elvis

Time to fire up the old CD player...

Bon Voyage

I have the majority of my cd collection on my computer right now in the form of MP3.  Over 100 cd's worth.  It takes up about 10 Gigs on my machine.

Bruckner
Mahler
Rachmaninoff
Tschaikovsky
Faure
Ravel
Stravinsky
Sibelius
Durufle

ktl

Thanks, Trois! You're right!

Nevertheless

How could I forget to add saxophone to my list?  (Well, I did have Kenny G, but...)

I absolutely  :inlove: adore  :inlove:  the sax!!  The lower pitched one -- alto?  Anyway, put that right at the top of my list.

Late '70's - early 80's rock
Old Bob Wills-style tunes (Asleep At The Wheel, George Strait, Marty Stuart)
The Beatles
Favorite secular female singer -- k. d. lang
Favorite secular male singer -- Lyle Lovett

Jim Abb

Best musical performance in concert....Dire Straits and Lyle Lovett.
Most entertaining in concert....Jimmy Buffett and Arlo Guthrie
Worst performance in concert.....Beach Boys and Alice Cooper
Least entertaining in concert....James Taylor and any opera (unless you need to catch up on your sleep :) )
