Don't know much about NASCAR, but

Tomorrow is the big day for NASCAR, that contrarian sport that puts it's biggest event at the beginning of the year and then dares those baseball wimps to say something about it.  Okay, I don't know a lot about the sport; I'm not a fanatic; I haven't painted the number 46 1/2 on my lawn and I don't wear a helmet to work.  My biggest interest in NASCAR is that I like to turn on the races and use the soothing engine sounds as background noise for Sunday afternoon naps.  And yes, I am the person who occasionally suggests that in order to make the races more interesting they ought to make everyone turn around and go the other direction when they have completed half of the race (I know that not everyone reachest the halfway point at the same time--that's what would make it interesting).

I would like to say that I am glad that officials have decided to move in that direction this year by having the drivers talk on Nextel cell phones during the race (at least that's the way I understand it).  This will be much more interesting than the old practice of having the drivers each smoke a carton of cigarettes during the contest (although all of the smoke in the cars did present an interesting obstacle).

I understand that the guy who won the poll--uh, I mean pole--is being forced to start last because he changed the engine in his car.  This hardly seems fair.  Isn't that like moving a baseball team back into last place whenever they make an in-season trade?

On second thought, that may not be such a bad idea.

Anyway, I see a conspiracy here, probably involving sabotage.  You tell me, who would Nextel rather see sitting way up on that pole, Dale Earnhardt Jr, or some guy named Biffle?

Anyway, today is the big day for all you NASCAR fans, so let's get this thing underway.  Play Ball! :itsraining:  :saint:

spurly

I had not considered the conspiracy angle, but you could be right.

I just hate that I have to miss the race.   :bestwishes: to #24, #48, #5, and #25.

But I have to pull for #18 tomorrow because he will be carrying the logo for "The Passion of the Christ" movie.  It'd be something to see Jesus come across the finish line first!

I'm glad you pointed out on another thread that it was GW Bush who left on the plane.  I had thought it was Kurt Busch, and was confused.

On a related note, with the popularity of NASCAR rising to the point where "NASCAR Dads" are considered an important political demographic, have the powers that be considered broadcasting the races in English? ??? Or at least with subtitles?

Jeff

My vote is to combine the TV coverage of these two winter/early spring wastes of bandwith:  NASCAR and PGA.  Hey... they've got all that turf in the middle of the infield at the racetrack, right?  Put the golfers in there and let 'em swing away.... hit a car?  Get a point!  Of course, to make it fair, we'd make the golfers and their silly little carts fair game as they move from the grandstand to the infield ;-)

/sigh/ Less than seven months to the start of college football season!  Well, at least we have March Madness coming up (maybe make it more interesting this year and actually call traveling, fouls and palming the ball?)  Probably not.

marc

At least NASCAR had a short season.  I heard a crew chief or some such person say after the race "We've just won the Super Bowl.  This is our Super Bowl".

So I guess we've got an all-star race next week, and that's it till next year. :shrugsmiley:

Well, Jesus was riding with Bobby Labonte, and Labonte didn't win.  I was disappointed (not that I think Jesus works that way :-) )  Bobby finished 11th, but carried the Passion colors beautifully.

Mark Martin has always been my favorite driver but it's been... uh... hard... to keep rooting for him since Viagra became his sponsor.

His car blew up early in the race and he finished last so I turned off the race pretty early.

The makers of Viargra may want to rethink their sponsorship.

I don't get it; they're racing again today.  Didn't they find out who was fastest last week?   ???

My brother pulled for Lake Speed a few years back because he drove the Spam car.  He joined the fan club and got a cool Spam t-shirt, recipes in the mail, and the like.  Wonderful Spam.

Did they put the spam logo on the hood of Lake Speed's  boat? ???

marc

Okay.  Matt Kenseth's won two in a row.  Can we say we've figured out who's the fastest now and quit? ???

spurly

Quit after the third race?  You've got to be joking.  Things are just starting to get interesting.  My guy finished 15th today, and to him it probably felt like finishing first after hitting the wall in qualifying and then losing an engine in practice.

Go Gordon!  It's your year.

(By the way, I wasn't upset at all that Earnhardt had handling problems today.  I've never been a big fan of Jr.)

Kevin

spurly

Don't you just love Britol Motor Speedway.  I'm just sorry my guy only finished 9th - but with all the wrecks at Bristol, I'm just glad he finished.

What do you all think about Earnhardt admitting that he purposely caused a caution flag to come out at one point in the race.  He should be fined for that, in my book.  What a loser.  He can't catch up on his own, so he does something to cause a yellow flag to be thrown.  May he blow an engine next week.

Kevin

spurly

Today Earnhardt was fined $10K and 25 points for purposely causing a caution.  Good job NASCAR!  Now start fining drivers who purposely throw debris on the track to get a caution.  That is dangerous too.

Okay, so this thread's two years old, and NASCAR still hasn't changed their ways.  Still doing the weird Super Bowl first thing.  Nonsense!

I do want to thank NASCAR for helping me figure out that I'm in better shape than I thought.  See, I drive 45 minutes each way to work, an hour and a half every day.  And if NASCAR's a sport, driving is exercise.

So I get plenty of exercise.  :p

Jimbob

I found Olympic Curling to be immensely more interesting.

Rally racing is fun to watch.  NASCAR is terribly boring, from my pov (and I used to like it back when they drove real cars).

Even better for you, Marc.  I bet you're even able to handle a right turn and a hill now and then.

Change my own tires too, occasionally.

Jimbob

Please tell us you don't wear the funny drivin' suit, though. :p

marc

Well.....

(I really didn't post what you think you once saw in this space.)

twd

I saw it, just didn't know how to respond.  :p

There was a quote from one of the drivers not long ago about that.  I don't remember who--it might have been today's winner.  Whoever it was said there were two types of drivers, the ones who admit, uh, what I referred to earlier happening in their car, and those who lie about it.

After reading that quote, I really don't want to watch NASCAR anymore.  :O

OldDad

All this hatin' on NASCAR...

You know how that guy at work who says, or more likely whines, that he "Doesn't like baseball...baseball is soooo booring!" sounds to you?

That's what you sound like to us NASCAR fans.

OD

Jimbob

But baseball is booring on TV.

I'm a "gotta be there" sports guy.  I love going to ML baseball games.  TV just doesn't cut.  And sports on the radio?  That's Sheol on earth, my friend.

marc

Baseball is meant for the radio.  I grew up listening to Al Michaels (later Marty Brenneman) and Joe Nuxhall broadcasting Reds games, then when they were over tuning in to Ernie Harwell or Jack Buck coming in through the static.  Baseball is played in the imagination.

segell

I admittedly don't know much about NASCAR.  But I watched the Daytona and I found it utterly fascinating.  In Chris Chris Economaki's (sp?) time, the race didn't quite have the pizzazz to capture my interest.  But now, wow!!

Going into the pit, the crew bosses and drivers being miked,  the cars with camera's and the strategic camera placement on the course wowed me.  I still don't know much about the game, frankly, but I love the intrigue of racing.  It was a blast.

However, I still think "bump drafting" should be a name for a new dance.   :D

But, you want boring, what's with NASCAR on radio?   ::bored::[/color]
