I was getting ready to post another tongue-in-cheek response here, but since people sometimes take them serously, no matter how many smilies I put with them, I'll skip it this time.

;)

On second thought, I won't.  Tongue-in-cheek response follows:

[!--QuoteBegin--][/span]

Quote

[!--QuoteEBegin--]Actually, "corn" is used as a general term for grain by most English speakers outside the US
This is simply another attempt by the modernists to deny the inspiration of the Bible and the plain fact that it was written in the original King James English specifically for us Americans.  If the Bible says "corn", it means "corn", not wheat, not barley, not grape soda, not singing and clapping or playing a piano or anything else.  I'm again amazed at the lengths people go to to deny God's word! :alien:

[!--QuoteBegin--][/span]

Quote

[!--QuoteEBegin--]Actually marc, I noticed the smilie and never thought you were being too serious.  I was trying to reply to the original post but you snuck in before I could find the little snippet I linked to my post.

And how can you have taken me as being serious when I cited straightdope.com as my authority?
Sorry.  Wasn't sure if you were taking me seriously or not, but a few minutes before I posted here, over on a Cincinnati Reds discussion board, I seem to have started a major argument with a tongue-in-cheek post that people took seriously.  The argument rages on, but I have abandoned the thread. :alien:

[!--QuoteBegin--][/span]

Quote

[!--QuoteEBegin--]Janine, is that the one with "Easter" in place of "Passover" in the gospels?
I don't think it's only the very oldest museum-piece editions that have that, as I've seen KJVs like that lying about as "pew Bibles".

Sorry, I just hear all the silly reasons for people not believing in the bible, none of which I have ever heard used by a Real Life Atheist ™ as a reason they don't believe.

Nevertheless

This thought came to me while reading another thread, but was totally off topic, so...

[!--QuoteBegin--][/span]

Quote

[!--QuoteEBegin--]Deu 23:25 proves my point: When thou comest into the standing corn of thy neighbour, then thou mayest pluck the ears with thine hand; but thou shalt not move a sickle unto thy neighbour's standing corn.
I presume that this scripture is from the KJV.

Isn't corn native to the Americas?  If so, then the Israelites shouldn't have been growing any, should they?

Were the translators just playing fast and loose with a word that should have been rendered "grain" or something similar?

Who harvests corn with a sickle, anyway??

Never

Actually, "corn" is used as a general term for grain by most English speakers outside the US. See:

I'm sorry to post a message with no further substance, but I had to tell you Marc, that is simply hilarious.

Sadly, someone would probably make that argument though.

janine

Where's my "little-ear-of-stir-fried-baby-corn" smilie?

There are people who should not be allowed near a KJV Bible.  I swear, if I ever get the extra money, I'm gonna order a real KJV, one with the "f" and "s" looking alike and scatalogical references and stuff.  As like as possible to the actual Bible that came off the presses in 1611.  That's the one Paul used, right?

It's bad enough that people are afraid to look at the Greek or Hebrew for a troublesome passage, or one I know they don't understand or are misapplying...  when you have to translate the English to them first, it's a mind-blower!

Nevertheless

Janine, is that the one with "Easter" in place of "Passover" in the gospels?

It just makes my heart ache for all those lost souls who weren't around before 1611.  No chance at salvation without the (much trumpeted fanfare) "AUTHORIZED" version. :p

I have heard one person state that the KJV is the only version we should use, after all, it has "Authorized Version" right there on the spine.  What more do you need?

That is so stupid I almost don't believe it to be true.  If it is, that has to be the stupidest reason ever for not believing in the bible.

On the corn issue, like someone else said, they would have been referring to a generic grain, or the Hebrews could have actually had a corn-like grain themselves.  I would assume that when the translated it, they tried to find out what the actual word meant.

Corn, from what I have been able to learn, wasn't native to America so much as it was cultivated by the Indians over several hundred years, from a tiny thing that would fit in the palm of your hand, to an ear several inches long.

To clarify:  my post was totally tongue-in-cheek satire.  No one has suggested what I mentioned in my post.  It was an attempt to make a point using humor.  Please don't be offended by my pointing out my meaning like this.  I realize how easy it is to miss a line in a post and misunderstand the post's meaning.  I've done it many times.

QuoteThat's okay.  I'm used to people taking things I say seriously when I'm not being serious.  I'm also used to people taking nothing I say seriously because they never know whether I'm serious or not.

c'mon marc....you can't be serious!!!

marc

Haven't you read the Book of Mormon?  American Indians are really the lost tribe of Israel, so they undoubtedly brought corn over from Israel, where it originated.

:saint:  :alien:

[follow up that should have been included with previous post]

Neo, thanks for the Straight Dope link ... I haven't visited that site in a long time; about time I do ... it's a really good one. Fun and informative!

Can I say "I told you so" now?  Even after I included the prior warning that a tongue-in-cheek comment was ahead, if I understand this post right, my comment was taken seriously.   :help:

janine

Unfortunately, Marc, even though it was obviously satire, it was so very close to some stuff I've heard real people say, usually when (a) defending the KJV-only position, or (b)accusing people who enjoy sifting theough the Greek & friendly debate of being atheists or change agents or something.  Eeeewww...

Which, of course, is the point of satire. . . .

That's okay.  I'm used to people taking things I say seriously when I'm not being serious.  I'm also used to people taking nothing I say seriously because they never know whether I'm serious or not.
