I think these players were really making acapella sounds with their mouths, and they only sounded like trumpets to the untrained listener.

janine:

nt trumpets were the salpinx, adapted by the romans from the greeks and considered to have supernatural powers.
the silver trumpets of numbers are hasoserah.  the trumpets of joshua are sometimes called yebolem and were large animal horns with added metal bells for sound projection.
shofars were curved or straight and sometimes overlaid with gold or silver.

named trumpeters:

shebanaiah, joshaphat, nethanel, amasa, zechariah, benaiah, eliezer, jahaziel

unnamed:

joshua's trumpeters
gideon's warriors
the angels in revelation

what other bible musicians can you name?

dj  (-1,000,000 points if you don't get THE harp player!! :p)

I've searched the bible through and can't find a reference to Dizzy Gillespie or Louis Armstrong.  I did know a music teacher once who though that Maynard Ferguson's version of "Take the A Train" was a sign of the apocalypse, though.

Are you a Biblical trumpeter if you blew a shofar?  Or do we need to dig up the Greek/Hebrew to see just what they were blowing?

janine

So is a 'shofar-er' a trumpeter?

I'm trying to mentally gather you a bigger band.

janine

Alrighty, then.

Ooh, that would be a neat band to see, one with vintage-of-the-era-style instruments.  In concert, playing with Psalm lyrics.
