Chris is gone. Still can't believe in practice he forgot the most memorable line of the song.  ::shrug::

I know the board is loaded with Melinda fans but I'm totally fed up with a 29 year old who has been singing professionally for eight years doing the naive bit as a full-time shtick. Great song choice but no more of a rock stretch for her than "I'm a Woman" or "Trouble is a Woman" were. She can sing, and has fortunately gotten rid of the meek goo-goo eye routine but she just flat grates on me when she isn't singing.

Jordin. Probably her worst performance yet and thanks a lot for the "My mom grew up listening comment".  ::cryingtears::

Lakisha, can that poor girl ever do a song solid start to finish? Seems she always starts shaky, but once she gets revved up, she can flat sing. Fantastic song choice last night and outside the first couple verses was fantastic.

Phil. Durn his hide he seems to want to stay in the competition. Another very good performance from a guy a few weeks ago I thought was just marking time until booted. I was surprised he didn't get more heat for being so close to the original recording.

Blake. I don't know squat about beatbox. He did a song that was huge in college days (thanks for the reminder Jordin) and took a huge gamble. Choices like that probably won't win the competition for you (ask Daughtry) but it was fresh and enjoyable and more importantly the parts that were sung, were sung very well.

I'm confident that Chris is out and I'm pretty sure Jordin is safe, but after that I just don't have a feel for who might be the second one out tonight.

#1. Melinda Doolittle – I was worried about her, it being Rock Week and all – I should have known better.  She drew on her inner Tina Turner and nailed it!
2. Blake Lewis – It was certainly different... The guy has a great voice and an original streak.  I've been saying for awhile, he's a top 3 finalist.
3. Phil Stacey – I usually agree with Simon, but tonight I thought Phil was terrific tonight, one of his best.  May have bought himself another week or two.
4. LaKisha Jones – Wow!  Who would have thought Rock Week would have been a comeback week?  Her best outing in 4 or 5 weeks.
5. Jordin Sparks – I thought she did better than the judges did, but I didn't like this song for her.  She's not a rocker, and it showed.
6. Chris Richardson – Pitchy and shrill.  He's may be tonight's "casualty

Chris and Phil went out with great distinction, integrity and charm.  And I believe they both gave their very best performances last night.

So, it's down to 3 girls and a guy.  My two finalists remain Jordin and Blake.  But who can count Melinda out (though I wouldn't pay to see her)?  As for Lakisha, she's being more vulnerable and likable, but she's really not star material in my view.

And the beat goes on.........

mandalee65

It's going to come between Jordin and Melinda. Lakisha will go next, then Blake.

4kidsandadog

It tore me up to have Phil singing "Blaze of Glory" after getting the boot.  And did you notice that while the girls were all in tears over his departure, their eyes were dry for Chris?  I really would have preferred for Lakisha to get the boot rather than Phil this week. I do think Phil will get a record deal though... and that is what's important.

As for who will come out on top... I think it's kinda close.  Melinda really hasn't had a bad week, but I think of the girls, Jordin has the best marketability.  Blake is just cool. I think it will probably come down to the 2 girls and they'll all wind up with recording contracts.  So in the end, who wins really won't matter.

mandalee65

So here I am, lovin' Melinda again - but I would love it if she went into gospel or contemporary Christian after Idol is over. She'd be perfect for it.

Bon Voyage

Chris was cocky -- I haven't liked him from the get-go and expected him to get the boot a lot sooner.  And he whines when he "sings".

I can't stand Melinda Doolittle and most of them for that matter.  I stopped watching altogether.  NCIS is a better show.

He didn't whine.

He was nasal.

That is apparently a "style" of singing.

I didn't like Chris either. He bugged me for some reason. Love Blake though, but still kind of prefer Jordin to win.

But like what was said, at this point they are winners anyway you look at it.

Well, in modern Nashville, anyway.

segell

Well, I liked Chris a lot - he was just short on vocals.  I think both he and Phil were gracious and offered their best performances of the season.

segell

Ah, ah, ah, ah stayin' alive........Should be the theme for tonight.

marc

1. Jordin
2. Melinda

3. Lakisha

4. Blake

but Lakisha goes home.  Blake's built up a base and can get by with stinking tonight (which he did).  Lakisha frittered away weeks and weeks.

mandalee65

Tonight's performances were just so-so, and I think it was as much because of the song choices they were limited to. Lakisha goes tonight and Blake next week. (Can he not do a song without beatboxing? Enough already!)

marc

The judges mentioned that a better choice for Blake would have been "Jive Talking", but I would have liked to have heard him sing "New York Mining Disaster" or "I started a Joke".

OldDad

I had a feeling that tonight would be tough.  The Bee Gees were a force of nature back in the day, and Barry Gibb was the mastermind behind it all.  Their songs were melodic and hooky, but more complex than they seem.  Witness the fact that very few of their dozens of hits have been covered by other artists.  Everyone had high and low spots tonight...

#1. Jordin Sparks – First song: THAT'S what I'm talking about!  Best vocal and performance of the first round.  Second song: I hated the prom dress, and this song was not her best.

2. Melinda Doolittle – I wasn't blown away by the first song, but she was solid vocally.  The second song was much better, especially after she kicked it in.

3. LaKisha Jones – I didn't think "Stayin Alive

Jimbob

My order is the same as Marc & OD's.  It was a pretty unimpressive night all around, so it pretty well confirmed why the Bee Gees are on my "do not play @ any cost" list.  Seriously, most of their stuff makes me want to take a drill to my head w/in three notes.

On Lakisha's 1st, I didn't think it was that bad either, OD, and I didn't even think the squeak was that bad, kind of like the hoarseness at the end of "You Are So Beautiful", you know, when the guy goes high and squeaks, "to . . me - e - e - e . ."

mandalee65

I suspect this may be the first time we can all agree on order.

Weeble

I still think that Melinda was better than Jordan.  Her last song was more than just "pitchy" in spots.  There were a couple of notes that were just FLAT. But I have thought she was singing flat the past 3 weeks. Maybe it's because "she's just 17" or more realistically because she is tired. Whatever the reason she is singing flat and the judges refuse to comment on it.

I also think that because Melinda has been so consistent through the contest it is beginning to hurt her. Paula said that she was vocally sound but she was looking for something more. And I expected Simon to say. "It's a singing competition."

All that being said

Lakisha goes home tonight (with a recording contract)

Blake goes home next week (with a recording contract)

Melinda and Jordan in the finals with Jordan probably winning (Because she's only 17!). Both of them have a recording contract and none of the final four will put out more than three albums.

Arkstfan

1 Jordin. I thought her first song was one of her best performances and the second better than the judges thought.

2. Melinda. I really hate it for her but she is the music robot. She can bring back the notes perfectly but without life. Contrary to what the judges say, its not a singing competition. It's an element but its also about selling yourself to the public.

3. Lakisha. My prior question has been answered. She can start a song good, but that means an ending squeak. I suspect that if she had received just a little of the vocal training that the others have had she would own this season. But she's in trouble.

4. Blake. On a two song night, one beatbox is more than sufficient. The boy can sing and New York Mining Disaster or I Started a Joke either one would have shown that, while Jive Talkin would make a great song with some beatbox. He's shown pretty good instinct on song choices until last night.

Barry Gibb. No question which contestant impressed him most. A few years ago my wife bought the CD, "One Night Only", I made fun of her at the time but the more I listen the more impressed I am by the layers to their music, it is so much more sophisticated than first glance indicates.

Arkstfan

Dialidol believes Jordin and Blake are safe.

As to records, I still think Jordin is the one with real market potential. Melinda's comfort zone is clearly country music and if she makes it, American Idol will have helped launch the first black female country star.

segell

No surprise last nite.  I hope Lakisha can find peace in her life through the Prince of peace.  Her pain is so evident.

As I've been saying for a long time, Jordin is beyond her years.  I love watching her.  I can't say the same about Melinda.  As far as Blake is concerned, he needs to remind us again of his originality and creativity.  He was not impressive at all this week.  He could be in trouble if he doesn't turn it up.

I think Melinda and Jordin will be the finalists - although one of the websites declares Jordin and Blake as leading vote getters.

Jimbob

If Blake's "originality & creativity" are all centered on his gimmick, which even the judges are tired of, he'll be singing "Aloha" next week.  Still feels like that falsetto abusing guy last year to me.

Arkstfan

I think it is Jordin and Blake in the finals with Jordin winning.

Weeble

No, No, No, No, No, No, No, No, No.

Melinda and Jordan in the finals and Melinda winning.

OldDad

On another board, someone said Blake's future career path would be auditioning for Police Academy 8!

kalen

I want Melinda to win.... but I think Arkstfan is right, Blake and Jordin in the finals with Jordin winning.

But Melinda will have a rip-roarin career, no doubt about that!

mandalee65

I'm saying Jordin and Melinda, Jordin winning. I would really like to see Melinda go gospel. She'd be perfect for it.

Big Mike Lewis

The girls were awesome tonight.  Blake...what have I been saying about him?  The judges are starting to see that it all sounds the same every time and his little poplock dance he does while he sings is old too.

I called it on the beatboxing tonight though.  My wife was laughing too because I was predicting what he would do with the songs by actually doing his little record scratch imitation.  I did it before he started singing and then he did it...I literally fell off the couch laughing.

Then I did it before his second song which he did it again on!  I think people are starting to see that he's not really that "original".  Melinda is the best, but I think people like Jordin better because she's younger.  It really doesn't matter at this point does it?  All 4 will make music for a living from now on.  I would actually prefer to go home at this point so I could make the kind of record I wanted to make and not the AI-controlled machine.

Serenity432001

I'm going to predict Melinda as winner, Jordin runner up and Blake gone next week.  But, I have no talent so what do I know.  I just like Melinda, partly because she's from Brentwood.

OldDad

It's a tie!

1.5 Jordin Sparks – First song: Nice job on a classic from back in the day.  "Hard for the Money

marc

I had class tonight and missed the show.  What were the songs?

Weeble

OD,

You have got to give Doolittle props and points for singing much harder songs. She sang a Whitney and a Tina song. It was like when Bo sang A Capella. Very hard to do, and proved why she should be the winner.

Jordan is good but this year she is number two.

Blake, well can anyone say bring back William Hung!

kalen

They really put on a SHOW last night, didn't they?  Honestly, I'd have trouble voting for any of them as "Te Best", they were all so SPECTACULAR!  Even Melinda, who always gives me gooseflesh, stepped it up a notch.  And Jordin, who is really good but rarely ever "does it for me"... well she WOW-ed me last night with "I Who Have Nothing"!  They're ALL winners, imho.
