Besides, as a zoo vet whose patients rarely thank me, I was jealous!  :)   (You think pediatricians have it bad...)

janine

When he got to the point of drinking after the animals who had drunk after him, I knew he was gonna be alright!

Anyone? Surely someone.

We saw it yesterday, me, my hubby and our kids (all aged 6 and under).  We LOVED it!  My hubby and I both thought it was better than "Bruce" (though we really liked that one too).  I'm personally going through a Noah experience, have been for the last year or so, and I found myself crying during a couple of the scenes -- but I laughed too, and HARD!  The slapstick schtik in the middle had me rolling!  Steve WhatsHisFace is hilarious!

I wish Hollywood would make more movies that are this spiritually uplifting.  I truly, TRULY believe GOD was in the making of this film.

I think we'll buy it when it's out on DVD.  We don't buy a lot of DVDs but this is one I can see us returning to again and again.  It's that wonderful.  :o)

The poop scene is a good example of how they handled stuff perfectly.

Early on, Evan is hyper-concerned about the dirtiness of animals.  I mean, sure, no one says a dog is necessarily neat, but Evan was relating to them in a borderline "I need a psychologist" way.

The kids couldn't have a dog, not because there wasn't time in their busy family or any other good reason, but because Evan seemed to quiver and twitch at the thought of their germiness.

So at one point there's a quick shot of the dog getting up from a squatting position and leaving behind a little brown pile on the grass.  And everyone giggled.

The change in Evan, the shift from "picky anal-retentive germ-o-phobe" to a much more realistic way of moving through life with animals, is one of the best little sub-texts of the movie.

I even liked the homage they gave to honoring the gift of the planet and protecting it.  Not in a "earth first, humans second" sort of way (like so many preach), but in a true, honest way, a GODLY way.

So many good "subtexts" in the film.  I loved the part where Evan talks of his plans and God laughs -- not AT Evan, but because it really is an absurdly funny concept to Him, that WE have plans.  That just tickled me (and poked me in the heart).

I left the theater praising God, loving Him, adoring Him, thanking Him.  The movie was such a good reflection of how we relate to our Abba, and how He cares for us and stretches us and molds us.  It was just sooooooo uplifting!

Me too, I laughed outloud because I know God must laugh a bit when we talk about our "plans." Morgan Freeman was outstanding as portraying "God." I couldn't imagine anyone doing better.

This movie did almost moisten my eyes because I do feel like Noah sometimes (I'm not trying to compare myself to an ancient holy person). I feel like in ministry that I'm saying, "A flood is coming, get into the ark (Jesus) so you'll be saved." And people laugh. Tell me it's not politically correct. It's judgmental. That kind of thing. The expressions on Evan's (Steve Carrel) face when he would tell people that God told him to build the ark was so realistic and sincere. It was as though he was saying, "I know you're going to laugh at me and insult me, but I know God told me and what He thinks matters much more than what you think." Yet at the same time he showed humility. Especially when that reporter sarcastically asked him, "Why do you think God chose you?!" And Evan replied, "God chose all of us."

I loved this movie and so did my 5 year old! I've gone to the theater to see it TWICE which is a lot for me! I can't say enough good about it and we should support it so that Hollywood is motivated to do more films like Evan Almighty.

Segall might not agree with part about God choosing all of us....

janine

Segell needs a baboon to show up at his front door with a glass of lemonade.  That'll fix him!

janine

Hee hee hee... Seriously, I think they hit just the right balance.  Freeman's God laughing at Evan talking about his own plans... That was priceless.

It was not at all like some sort of megalomaniacal Star Trek character that thinks it's a god, laughing haughtily at the silly little puppet-humans.

It was so much more "Oh, honey, I get so much joy out of working with my people!  There are so many more things going on under and over, around and behind you, and even right before your very eyes!  Lean on Me, follow Me, I have your best plan ever, right here!"

Yeah, I really liked him as God in "Bruce".  I find myself hoping God is just like his portrayal, actually.  I grew up with that scary, fire-breathing God, the one who's disdains us and really wants nothing more than for us to trip up and fall on our faces so He'll have an excuse to hurl us into the deepest, darkest hole, just so He won't have to deal with us anymore.  Yeah, that God.  *shiver*

I still struggle with that image of Him, but when I see Morgan Freeman portraying the God I KNOW Him to be.... it just makes me cry, makes me want to hug Him and walk with Him and adore Him -- and know the HE wants that with ME as well.  That's how I know our Abba was in the making of this film -- if more people can know THAT God, the more people will want to draw to Him.  I know I wanted that after watching the movie.

Um... was that the actor Segall or our segell?

zoonance

yes!   (I respond, noting that a vowel can change the conversation either way!)

oh, alright, i'll be the cold water. the overtly pious party pooper.

i just don't get it.

a movie that tells us that god's goal for mankind is acts of random kindness?

sounds like willow creek to me.

but for a pure hollywood movie, it is probably as good as it will get in the family movie genre.

nothing offensive, yet i unlike others do not find the god character portrayed by mr. freeman comforting.

it is the picture of god and christ being portrayed by so many that want the christian theme to be "whatever makes you feel good do it, cause god still loves you".

yes he is love, unconditional. but that is just one facet of his character.

oh,well. at least it spells his name right.

I went to the theater twice to see it if that tells you anything.

janine

The acting doesn't take me to the theater -- something worth seeing magnified several times life size takes me to the theater.

So, yeah, find a cheap matinee and go to the theater.  Evan Almighty is nice, visually speaking, on the Big Screen, very colorful, fun special effects.

I'm sorry you felt it was shallow, saved.  I am not sure you will find the sight of God Himself very inspiring, when you see Him, should He chose to reveal Himself to you without fireworks and fear.

Serenity432001

I went to see it on Monday and I loved it.  Random acts of kindness seems to me to fit very nicely with the greatest commandments.  They came really close to describing God the way I understand Him, anyway.  I like the part where he was talking to Evan's wife and said when you pray for patiance you get an opportunity to be patient and when you pray for courage you get an opportunity to be courageous instead of patiance and courage just be given to you as a ginny in a bottle type gift.  That's how He seems to work in my life.

that's fair based on the comments i made.

but, janine, no one appreciates the "friend" we have in god, any more than i.

i don't see him as fire, thunder, and rebuke

i know literally thousands of people just like kalen, who have seen or see god as a god of correction and judgement. and these thoughts are painted by a pharisaical spirit that has permeated through the church since it's inception.

but just as misguided and dangerous is the polar opposite belief that is being perpetrated by oprah and many others, who preach an inclusive theology.

oprah states, "we all need crutches. for some it's islam. others find solace in nature or wicca. still others find peace in believing in the randomness of existence, and my crutch is jesus. i love my jesus. i need my jesus."

this is the god portrayed in the almighty series, and i think it is dangerous.

I noticed right away the slight inverting of this saying to make it fit the A.R.K.

Tears were brought to my eyes a couple of times as well.  But I really liked how God explained to Ethan's wife how prayers were answered. "Do you really think that when someone prays for patience that God just zaps them with a dose of patience?" (as an example)  I like the lesson given here that we are presented with opportunities to put God's answers to our prayers to work.

One of my favorite scenes from Evan Almighty.

peck

My wife and I just saw it at the cheapie movie...We almost went to see it at the high priced movie house...Glad we waited..I would wait for the rental..

However,It almost brought tears to my eyes when the dove showed up on the limb of a tree with the blade of grass in his mouth...That helped me to catch the love of God...The special effects was well worth the ticket...Seeing an imaginary ark helps my mind to more completely comprehend the real Ark..a visual image appearing so real ...

Something occured to me also...Just as God was protecting his people from a real situation as a busted dam(in the movie)...Maybe an object from the sky was about to hit earth at a certain time and cause the oceans to overflow the world(a natural disaster)and God wanted to preserve humanity and animals..Maybe the flood was from a natural disaster and could very well happen again...

God bless,Peck

I thought God said otherwise... you know, the whole rainbow thing.  ::wink::

peck

You're right DCR..It's been a long time since I've reviewed the ark story..and fire seems to be next not water if I remember well...

However,a natural disaster could occur without God ordering it...

God bless,Peck

YEP FIRE, when Jesus comes again, fire will purify the Earth of all unrighteousness. dont think this will help ::intherain:: lol only this will  ::bowing::

janine

saved, your perceptions seem as warped to me as mine no doubt do to you.

Goodness.  Chuck out any references to "Daddy", "Papa" -- you know, "Abba"?

get out that exacto-knife.  No sense leaving in any of the word-pictures that promote the idea of God as tenderly caring for His own, so much so that he would squat over them and ruffle His feather to keep them safe, or that He would love them as tenderly as a nursing mother -- and be as likely to forget them as a mother would the child she bore and nursed.

Naaaaah.  Nothing close, intimate, informal there.  Nope, no touchie-feelies there.

Stop letting that stupid Oprah-ization of the image of God determine how you relate to Him.

And just how do you propose that "we as Christians" stop God from being portrayed this way?

Except that God said it wouldn't.

"I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be cut off by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.

kamakaz

yes and that is what the rainbow represents, not gay pride.

Taste the rainbow, its time to take back the rainbow!

peck

Thanks Lee..I need to read about the ark again....but in my mind,an object in outer space could cause a disturbance that might cause God to save humanity in some way...not an ark of course but until he is ready to destroy the heavens in his own time period...He might need to preserve humanity in some fashion until he gets ready...At some period in time ..maybe a million years..We may have to face an encounter from outer space that is large enough to eliminate humanity wihout God's help...He will always make a way for the survival of his creation until he himself utterly destroys it....

Just pondering

God bless,Peck
