My question is has anyone ever heard of soul ties?
I'm wondering if there is any scriptural basis for what some call soul ties, which, to my understanding is when you are bound to an ex-partner spiritually and/or your souls are tied together and it is hard for you to break away from this person.

It is a type of oppression.

I've never seen anywhere in the Bible where it speaks about this, but I have heard many ministers use this phrase when talking about old relationships that aren't easy to break away from. I'm wondering if this is just another made up doctrine that certain Christians have adopted into their beliefs.

ConnieLard

I have never heard of it.  As far as I know there is no scriptural basis.  Sounds kinda creepy.

I do not believe in "soul ties", as some sort of Biblical doctrine, an oppression bordering on possession, as some describe it.

Nothing in Scripture deals with it.

I do believe in it -- and have used the term -- as a simple way to describe an unhealthy or ill-timed infatuation.  I think it's a good way, if a little bit overly-dramatic, to describe what that's like.

Do you know where the term comes from and could you explain to me exactly what it is?

I said what I understand it to be:
Quote... a simple way to describe an unhealthy or ill-timed infatuation.  I think it's a good way, if a little bit overly-dramatic, to describe what that's like.

I don't hold with any of the spooky people's understanding of it -- here, for example.

Lord Jesus, I now bind in Your name and cast out with Your power any freaky ideas about how demons are stronger than You in us... in Your name I revel...Amen!

I remember years ago some pastor told me about soul ties and how it is based on scriptural doctrine. She gave me some scriptures to look up and all that the scriptures talked about were familiar spirits. I don't believe in it, but do you think that familiar spirits and/or generational curses have any relation to soul ties?

janine

I don't believe in generational curses nor in familiar spirits, not the way the spooky people do anyway.

I suggest that what one person calls a "generational curse" is another person's passed-down bad raising.

So would you say that soul ties is a good or bad thing and in what ways?

I would say it was a good thing in the case of King David and Jonathan, through their relationship God perserved his life.

The reason why I asked was because throughout my Christian life, other Christians have made soul ties seem like it was something evil and demonic.
No one has ever really taken the time to explain it to me through scripture. As a matter of fact, I don't even think that they knew that there was a scripture to support their beliefs.

I guess that it could also be a bad thing, depending on who you have soul ties with and the nature of the relationship.

Do you know of anyone or have you ever experienced soul ties? If so what is it like and how do you know if you have soul ties with someone? ::smile::

CSloan

If the nature of the relationship is ungodly, I doubt its a "soul-tie" but a lusting of the flesh. You will know when your soul feels bound to someone, or God has placed someone in your life for a reason. Through prayer, and humbly seeking His will; God will reveal His will for you.

janine

See, that sort of "soul tie", that closeness to one with whom you seem to be born to be close to -- that's one thing, as illustrated by David & Jonathan.

What the spooky people are making a living off of, writing books about, and scaring their flocks of followers with, that's another matter, and not one I would put much time into worrying about.

Are you saying that there are different types of soul ties and if so could you tell me the different types of soul ties?

janine

No, not really -- i am mostly saying there is no such thing as soul ties.

the first mention of a union of two bodies is in genesis:

Gen 2:24  Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

now according to those i know in the ministry of deliverance, i am told that godly soul ties are formed when a couple are married (Ephesians 5:31, "For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh."), and the godly soul tie between a husband and the wife that god intended him to have is unbreakable by man (mark 10:7-9).

however, when a person has ungodly sexual relations with another person, an ungodly soul tie is then formed (1 Corinthians 6:16, "What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh.").

this soul tie fragments the soul, and is destructive.

people who have many past relationships find it very difficult to 'bond' or be joined to anybody, because their soul is fragmented.

these verses mentioned by most who put a lot of stock in soul ties, only speak of becoming "one flesh".

"one soul" is mentioned directly only twice in the king james and has no possibility of implying a "soul tie".

and as far as i can find, it is not indirectly found in the word.

can "one flesh", also infer the soul?

maybe.

but i am not convinced.
