When the angel Gabriel paid a call on Mary in Nazareth to announce to her that she was to be the mother of God's Son, she could have given any of three possible responses.  She might well have been expected to reply, "No way!  That would get me stoned to death for sure!"   She might also have replied, "Okay, Joseph and I will take care of that matter as soon as our marriage is consummated."  Had she responded in either of the above fashions, the blessed event would never have occurred; however, there was a third option, and she chose it: "And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her."--Luke 1:38  Because Mary responded in that manner, the most unique event in all human history occurred: She as a virgin became the mother of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
