I thought this list might be fun to introduce people to movies they may not have scene (ooh a pun):

Romance - Casablanca or Singing in the Rain
Action - Swiss Family Robinson, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park
Drama - Cool Hand Luke or Gigo
Sci-Fi - Logan's Run or Tron (the geek in me)
Comedy - Bill Cosby "As himself" or The Jack Benny Program

I have lots of favorites. My current favorite is:

"The Agony and the Ecstasy" with Charlton Heston.

Here is a video link to a great scene. In this scene, Pope Julius II tells Michaelangelo (Charlton Heston) that he wants him to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. The look on Heston's face is priceless:

DW Griffith's Intolerance ranks as my #1. It is stunning. It is a silent movie, for those who do not know.

Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ is the best 'Bible' movie, though Demille's Ten Commandments is also great.

I rank John Ford as the greatest director, and any number of his films should rank among the 200 best ever: The Searchers, Stagecoach, How Green Was MY Valley, The Informer, The Grapes of Wrath, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, My Darling Clementine, The Quiet Man, etc.

A Man for All Seasons is a must.

I love all kinds of foreign language films. The 7 Samurai, which is the basis of The Magnificent 7, is a masterpiece. The French Visitors is a riot of a comedy, and it comes through fully even reading subtitles (I never get dubbed foreign language films). I am drawn to Russian movies (and fiction), and I really love Ivan the Terrible and Andrei Rublev.
