Back, hip, or glute issue

I've had back issues for a while that I see a physiotherapist for. It's helped a lot but lately it's getting a bit worse...but occasionally not all the time. I'm thankful for that.  I had this episode today at work where it felt like my hip, low back, or glute was going to seize up on me to the effect that it was noticeable to others. That's happened twice now where someone has said, are you okay? It works itself out but it's scary.  I am going to the dr next week to talk about it but the first person who saw this when it happened to me wondered if it was sciatica?  It doesn't shoot down my leg though. It's very deep in my glute/low back... I guess more than hips.

Anyone else experienced this?

Jaime

I had something very similar where my pyriformis muscle was tight. Had to do several sessions at the chiropractor. You might google some stretching exercises for that muscle

hazel_eyes

I've heard of that muscle... I think I'll go to Physio again... it's scary/weird when it happens.

Make sure it is indeed vertebrae-related.

Some forms of back pain are actually angina (I thought I had a bad back for years - until I suddenly found I needed heart surgery.

NorrinRadd

Sciatica and pyriformis are both good possibilities.

Pain does not need to shoot down the leg for sciatica to be the cause.  It depends on how the nerve root is being irritated.

I've been staying just below the daily limits for ibuprofen and acetaminophen for over a year, plus 1000 mg of aspirin to start the day.  Could be a race to see whether stomach, liver, or kidneys blow out first.   ::juggle::

Be careful, NorrinRadd.

Sounds terrible, Hazel. Don't know what it is, though. I had a sciatica flare up just one time - when I was pregnant with my daughter. I had the typical symptoms of a hot wire feeling running from my hip down the back up my thigh. Since I was pregnant, they didn't want to give me pain meds, but the chiropractor really helped.
Hope you get it resolved soon!

As far as medication, the only thing that seems to help me with a sciatica flair is Enerex Serrapeptase. Six capsules of 120,000 units a day for about 3-4 days, then taper off. That seems like a gross overdose, but the maker of the supplement recommends it. Smaller amounts do not help. Muscle relaxer, hydrocodone, or ibuprofen do not help me much either. That may all be in my head, but I don't care where it is, as long as something helps.

Thanks, all. The first reply was so comforting as I feel it is a muscle thing now that Jaime mentioned it. My muscles in my low back/glutes are extremely tight. I didn't have any major episodes today and I'm going to Physio Thursday.

Consider the possibility of Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD).  I suffered with that for a couple of years until I was correctly diagnosed with PAD.  A couple of stents and the problem was gone.

hazel_eyes

I had back surgery when I was younger and am less flexible than other people so it causes me some issues now. Makes sense.

Regular physio is really good. (I do regular exercise rehab myself and it's really helpful.)

I wonder if a chiropractor could help? It might be worth a try.

hazel_eyes

Physio the other day helped a lot!

A lot of ppl do go the chiropractor route.

hazel_eyes

Yep. I'm not one of them. :)
Might try Osteopathy though.

A chiropractor was helpful when I had a herniated lumbar disk in the late '80s.

OTOH, the same guy made matters worse when I had an issue with a pinched nerve in my neck in... um... whatever year the second "Matrix" movie was in theaters.  2003 or so.  I ended up going to a PT, and got mostly put back in order.

You probably understand the difference between the two more than I do. I hope the consultation helps you.

NorrinRadd

The doc who sent me to the PT was a DO and orthopedic surgeon.
