Not many frequent the movie section here ... but we really enjoyed True Grit ... liked the John Wayne version as well.

I can't see how anyone could portray Rooster Cogburn better than John Wayne. I haven't seen the new version, but I would think it would be like watching the Three Stooges with Shemp instead of Curly.

Mere Nick

I always preferred Curly to Shemp, myself.  Nothing against Shemp, but I like Curly.  It was always a disappointment to me that the Three Stooges didn't make a final episode where Larry and Curly kill Moe in a slow, agonizing manner.

I thought that as well ... being a big John Wayne fan ... but Jeff Bridges did a really good job. Course I love the stuff the Coen brothers produce.

Snargles

My wife and I thought it was a really good movie. I especially liked the way most of the background music was built around 4 hymns: What A Friend We Have in Jesus, Gloryland Way, Leaning on the Everlasting Arms and Hold to God's Unchanging Hand. I have noticed that the reviews mention the first 3 hymns but none of them mention Hold to God's Unchanging Hand. I have always liked it but I'm wondering if it has been forgotten by the praise song generation.

True Grit with out John Wayne wouldn't be like Love Me Tender without Elvis  ...

Remakes are for the young generation who are quite use to potty mouths and the raunchy. Of course it is a new generation of christians where just about nothing offends.

Of course things offend us!  For one:  Remaking any John Wayne movie.  It's cinematographic blasphemy!

I must admit, I only watched part of it.  Both my father and I got sick of it and turned it off.  We couldn't watch anymore.

It was like:
Darth Vader without James Earl Jones's voice
Dirty Harry using a .22
Indiana Jones without the scene where he shoots the guy with a sword
Monty Python without flesh wounds
...
