I'm interested in opinions about which tempo is best to take this movement of Barber's violin concerto. The marked tempo is 192 per beat which I think sounds good. The first video goes significantly faster than that, and the second significantly slower. I imagine the faster one sounds more impressive but I'm thinking of it more in terms of "sounds good" than showy. I'm practicing this myself and I'm thinking I like the 192 suggestion (somewhere between these two examples), though I've managed to blaze through the first page, so far, at the speed of the first video. (It wasn't as difficult as I expected, so far).

--I'm just trying to keep my skills up to speed . . . be sure to be a professional. I've hated almost every concerto I've ever heard but I love all three movements of Barber so I'm working on tackling them.

I have to admit my violin listening experience tops out at my kids high school orchestra performances, but for my ear - I like the second one.  It gave me a better chance to absorb what I was hearing if that makes sense.  The first one was flying by so fast I was thinking "What was that I just heard?  And that? And that?"

Question of the day:  Do you make the same types of facial expressions as the guy in the 2nd video?   ::smile::

Thank you, NowFound. As impressive as the first one was, I'm inclined to agree--going that fast it's simply hard to appreciate it as music. I started chipping away at this movement . . . going slower than the first allows for some more musicality.

Naw I don't think I look like the second guy.

Not a big fan of Barber. And I have not heard this concerto before.  \

That said, I do think the first one is taken too fast, although for practice purposes it might be useful. Do you know who is playing?

The 2nd one is nice - the notes actually have time to develop, but perhaps a bit too developed for the intent of Barber.  (Wow - Perlman is really young there!)  I am sure he would play it up to tempo today.

My advice would be to stay at the given tempo.

Cally

Yes, thank you Dave. I like the printed tempo the best, which is about right in the middle of the two tempos.

Perlman is actually the conductor. The performer is Giora Schmidt. The performer of the first one is Hilary Hahn--impressive technique, to be sure, although yes at that speeds it sounds like an etude.

Well, very cool.  Good luck with any tempo you go at.  It sounds like a difficult one.

thx. I seem to be able to get through most of it at the marked tempo at this point. I'm not finding it too terribly bad . . . but those are an awful lot of notes to learn. ::smile::

Don't tell Yngwie Malmsteen that going too fast makes the music unappreciatable.  [;)]

Of course.. Perlman would be in a wheelchair. (a fact I often forget)
