Just saw this movie yesterday and it was phenominal. I knew it would be because the morons that liked Pulp Fiction gave unbroken lousy reviews. They are always very accurate if you consider the opposite of what they say.

Cally

I was interested in this movie. The reviews I heard said it went a little overboard with the "hero worship." On the other hand, of course, I don't expect the average critic to resonate with it. I might end up seeing it anyway because my Dad wants to go see it (I just hardly ever go to movies anymore).

Jaime

I read some negative reviews before I went, and that motivated me even more to see it, since they are the same ones that liked Pulp Fiction.

I have heard the book is even better, but the things that Zamperini went through was inspiring.

Hm, there are barely any reviewers out there who DON'T like Pulp Fiction. But I'll take a few shots at that.

It has a lot of appeal on shock value and deviance, taken with a seriousness that you don't usually see. In so doing it gets childish and self-indulgent real quick.

I mean, take the scene when Marvin gets shot. The movie makes a big deal out of these guys freaking out, not knowing what to do, needing an expert, and the "expert" shows up and tells them really obvious things about how to clean up a car. Give me a break, the whole scene was obviously meant to make fun of any sensitivities in the audience--but it was just illogical and stupid.

Tarantino is a punk. A REALLY intelligent punk.  His way of chopping up the sequences of events out of order as well as multiple, converging plotlines while making a sensible story arc with such effectiveness is a rare treat for story form. It's also rare for the more "straight-laced" works of fiction to match his sheer energy, confidence and hard-hitting intensity, sadly. But it's all undermined by the fact that he doesn't have much of any point to make about anything, and unfortunately that's part of his toxic appeal. It's an astonishingly elaborate monument to nothing; he writes an elaborate plot that concludes on a goody-two-shoes morality note that's dissonant and unbelievable for everything else.

Which is why movie reviewers have no credibility with me or at the very least are an inverse indicator of what is good. In other words, I always like everything they think sucks, and vice versa. They want to sing the praises of so called artistic endeavors that would require sensible people being horse whipped to sit through, ie Pulp Fiction, or most any other "critically acclaimed" cinematic work.

It was an Ok movie for me...

As stories of the indominable human spirit in the face of overwhelming challenges are OK, this movie was very OK and a true story, which made it even more incredible. And knowing Louis' story up until his death and his forgiveness of his tormentors made the story all the more incredible.

I typically don't watch remakes of real life events. Hollywood takes too many liberties in my opinion so as to render proper respect to those who were there as it happened. That trailer may help some who haven't heard of this movie or are wondering about it.

With Jole at the helm of this I'm surprised the Oscars didn't give it more attention.

Yeah it was great.

Laurel

I read the book but haven't seen the movie yet.  In the book, after Louie comes home he has a hard time adjusting -- what we would probably call PTSD today -- drinking too much and being cold to his wife.  Then, one day, he goes to a Billy Graham revival and gives his life to Jesus, turning everything around for him.  I heard someone say that this part was not in the movie and I would be very disappointed if the movie makers left out such an inspiring story of  the value of faith.

I pay no attention to the movie critics I go see what I think I will like.  Saw this would pay t see it again.  A truly remarkable man.  Of course I come from a family that has had members in the US military during every war from the revolutionary war till today.

Saw this movie recently, and really enjoyed it. It seems slow in parts, but think it is meant to keep you in the moment, to feel what he was feeling and going through, as best as a movie can accomplish. The ending was amazing. No spoilers  ::saint::
