Doomsday preacher Harold Camping dies at 92

OAKLAND, CALIF. – Harold Camping, the preacher who used his large audience that included his evangelical radio ministry and thousands of billboards to convince people that the world was ending but then gave up prophecy when his “prophesied” doomsday did not come to pass, has died at age 92.

Family Radio Network marketing manager Nina Romero said Harold Camping died at his home on Sunday. She said he had been hospitalized after a recent fall.

Camping recently made our Top Ten False Prophets list coming in at number two. What kept him out of the number one spot is that Mr. Camping acknowledged that he was wrong and gave up the business of prophesying the end of the world or Christ’s return.

“We realize that many people are hoping they will know the date of Christ’s return,” Camping wrote in March 2012. “We humbly acknowledge we were wrong about the timing.”

“If people want me to apologize, I can apologize,” he said in response to questions about some listeners’ decision to give away their possessions in anticipation of his predicted Rapture. “I pray all the time for wisdom.”
