Have you ever had a “holy moly!” moment? I’ve been in the habit for years of using the term “holy moly” when something astonishing happens and I guess Caden picked that up from me.
Caden is our grandson and he, along with his brother Tristan, was spending a month with us when it came time for Vacation Bible School. At two, Caden really wasn’t old enough to attend but an exception was made for him because he’s a quiet kind of little guy, but he loves music and loves to sing.
One of the songs the children were taught has the lines, “…pour out your power and love as we sing holy, holy, holy! Holy, holy, holy!”
After about three days of VBS, Caden was beginning to sing the songs he had learned around the house as he played and this particular day I heard him singing in the other room and decided I’d spy to see what was going on. When I crept up to the door and peeked in, there was Caden, turning in circles, waving his hands and singing, “Holy Moly Holy! Holy Moly Holy!” over and over. I started thinking about that as I slipped back to the living room…
As Christian’s our lives should be filled with “holy moly” moments. Moments when we can’t BELIEVE what God is doing or has done for us! Times when we see the resurrected Christ as “on our side,” doing things for us that we could never do for ourselves.
In my mind I can see those who Jesus touched and healed while He was here with us falling to their knees shouting out, “HOLY MOLY! How beautiful the world is! I CAN SEE! (walk, hear, whatever)”. Holy moly! But more than that, we should be able to point to moments in our own lives when Holy Moly! is the only proper response.
How about the day you first surrendered to Him? “Holy moly! How Good God is! I feel so clean and so alive!”
Or the day you narrowly missed being in a serious accident because you got that last minute phone call as you were walking out the door and it delayed you just enough. Was that a coincidence or was that God’s protecting hand? I suggest it was a Holy Moly moment.
I believe that all Christians have many Holy Moly moments in our lives … the only problem is that we don’t recognize them when they come to us. We call it a coincidence, a chance meeting, a wonderful accident … but we don’t stop to see the loving hand of God working and cry out “Holy Moly! How He loves me!”
Start searching for Holy Moly moments in your life. Start with going back in your memory and acknowledging the holy moly moments that God has already given you … then, begin watching for holy moly moments as they come along. The Bible says that God works ALL THINGS to our good if we love and serve Him (Romans 8:28) so you can feel free to ascribe every event in your life as a “God-moment” where He was working in your life. Then you can search out the Holy Moly moments as they come along and give thanks for every single one of them!
