The German family that the Obama administration threatened with deportation after they sought asylum in the U.S. because they wanted to home school their children has been granted permission to stay in the country indefinitely according to a family attorney.
Michael Donnelly of the Home School Legal Defense Association told ABC News his office received a call from the Department of Homeland Security informing him that Uwe and Hannelore Romeike and their seven children will not be deported.
The news came just 24 hours after the Supreme Court said it would not hear the family’s asylum appeal, raising fears the Romeikes could be sent back to Germany, the country they had fled from in order to be able to home school their children.
“[The Romeikes] are very relieved, they are grateful, they are happy and pleased that they will be able to stay here peacefully and homeschool their children. They are grateful that someone in the government recognized that it would be the wrong thing to send them back to Germany,” Donnelly said.
The devoutly Christian Romeike family fled to the United States in 2008 from southwest Germany after the German government threatened them with legal action for homeschooling their children, which has been banned in Germany since 1918. Full Article.
Wallace Henley, in a special to ChristianPost, said:
The Supreme Court’s decision implied that, in the eyes of the federal government, parents do not have a fundamental constitutional right to home school their children. Again, we can be grateful the DHS has granted “indefinite deferred status” to the Romeikes.
Not quite asylum, but at least a few steps away from the precipice.
The Romeikes fought hard to stay in Germany and exercise their parental rights – some would call it a responsibility – to be in charge of their children’s education. The German regime, noting the Romeike’s unwillingness to march in lockstep with the jackbooted secularism tromping over Western Europe, threatened to take custody of the Romeike children.
Their efforts to remain in Germany exhausted, the Romeikes fled to the home of the brave and the land of the free. But the discerning eyes of judges and the Obama-Holder Justice Department spotted them quickly and knew they were the enemy (though they sometimes aren’t clear who other adversaries of America are).
