‘How Great Thou Art’ gets Mississippi high school band pulled from halftime

8-22-2015 – A Mississippi high school band was banned from taking the field at halftime during Friday night’s season-opening game after district officials said the planned performance of “How Great Thou Art” would put it in violation of a federal court order.

The Brandon High School Band was slated to perform the Christian hymn that dates back to the 1890s as part of its football halftime show. Band director Tim Cagle said the school board has been aware of the song’s inclusion since last year.

“When I picked the halftime show in late February of last year it was with full administrative support, but the Rankin County School Board has decided that we are not allowed to perform the half time show due to recent court rulings,” band director Tim Cagle said in an email to students. The email was first reported by the Clarion Ledger.
